  • Monk an expensive job?

I have monk at lvl 15, thf at 16, and war at 34. My question is, is monk expensive to lvl up with the cost of lvling thf and war too? What is the minimum required amount of gil to play monk efficiently? I know I cant afford a Scorpion harness and its probably monk's best body gear.. and CCs are extremely over my limit. Also, Emperor's Hairpin and Lizzy boots are expensive too. I havent really gotten far with melee jobs, my main is summoner.

    Re: Monk an expensive job?

Well camp the NM with some friends or LS members and get your hairpin and boots. They're great for THF, not so sure they would really be needed for MNK.

Any job is as expensive as you make it. I haven't really leveled MNK as far as I need to. It's a sub that I kind of enjoy, the only problem is a job surviving through the Dunes. I'm thinking MNK will be fun once I hit Lv.20, but I'm not excited about doing much of anything in the Dunes these days.

The O. Kote are Lv.34, and I know they're a couple mil on my server. I don't remember what I looked at last night, I saw a lot of 2-6mil items I would like for various jobs. I've heard some people say to not even worry about the Cross Counters, and I've heard some say they're the best there is for a long time. I'll most likely never level MNK that far so it won't be an issue for me.

So I'd say MNK is about as expensive as WAR is at that level, but I'm not a highly experienced MNK. Perhaps somebody else can offer greater insight.

MNK is actually pretty inexpensive until around 40 really, sure 24 has Emp Pin (which is great until 41, Voyager Sallet) and 34 has O. Kote (not really needed, but nice due to beetle/crab leveling until high 50s). And 40 has Jujitsu Gi and Brown Belt which are $$$ on every server. THF is $$$ from the get go, if you want to play super pimped.

        Re: Monk an expensive job?

The only expensive item that you pretty much "have to buy" for MNK is a Jujitsu Gi. You can skip out on O. Kote and Scorpion Harness, and you can do the Brown Belt quest yourself at about level 51/52 (you wouldn't wear it much before this anyway, Life Belt and Tilt Belt are also amazing).

Cross-Counters are nice, but again they are an extravagance. Get TM Hooks (+1 or +2 if you can) at 50 and then just switch to Bone Patas +1 and Feral Fangs as you level up. Grab a Shiva battle for Shiva's Claws at 65.

Your regular AF is very strong as MNK and you can wear it pretty much all the way to 75. If you want to spend a bit of money or do a bit of work with NM, you can grab some better equipment for your feet/head/legs slots, but again they are not 100% needed.

MNK is just like any job. It will be expensive if you want the absolute best equipment right away every time. There are alternatives that do not sacrifice much power, if any at all.

          Re: Monk an expensive job?

if you wanna lvl with more *affordable* gear and pop real nice numbers still there is a good way.
make a ppt rng friend, as long as he sticks atk down, you will have very nice dmg/hit, have a blm stick choke with that its wonderful, pair up with a brd with minuet mad, your in heaven, and you can use the decent gear. your acc shuoldnt be to hard to work on as long as you have sushi.

now if you got many $$$, ya it shows in dps.
but you can go not crazy expensive stuff. just dont go real bad gear, your main priority if usually a high DPS weapon. use hooks until spartan. CC`s are very nice for the 8 lvls, but if you cant, dont. at lvl 66 i believe you get feral fang, cheap man`s cc`s for only 200-400k. dps is great on them. MAKE SURE YOU USE SUSHI.
If you notice you hit them VERY realialy with no sushi go ahead use DMG food, otherwise sushi makes it nice.(al though long term sole sushi costs a lot)

Oh ya, for the love of god just dont use shiva claw's, i hate monks using shiva in xp pt... horrible horrible dps compared to a sole sushi + feral user. pre sushi shiva was pretty good, because of the miss fest.

          to sum it up:

Gear up on a high DMG hth weapon(low delay is better imo), ACC (2 snipers + AF body is good). Use a BROWN BELT, use sole sushi until you hit your lvl 73+ and have a brd in bone pt. 73+ KRT pt use coeurl sub. ACC wont be a big issue.

post 74 you usually go more STR.

Lv 75, you tank a lot of the time in xp pt's.

Monk is very cheap till you hit end game. Then the cost of stuff you'd like to have gets very very high. I'm already staring down the 16 million gil of abjurations. You don't require them per-say (last item I actually bought for MNK equipment wise as Rasetsu Hakama), but they do help.

              Re: Monk an expensive job?

I understand that you dont have to go throughout the game with the best gear all the time, but Monk I believe is different that most jobs. I am approaching level 40 so take this with a grain of salt (Im a little scared right now)

At level 33 currently, there is not much that I do besides ctrl+a. Yes I am a very good SATA partner and I can 2nd Tank in emergencies. I report TP and I help put together the skillchains. Besides that there is not much more I can do. My point is that monk is not a high skill job class at this time, and from what I have read It seems quality of a player = skill+equipment+time comitment. And since skill is not a big of factor, your quality depends more on your gear.

This would be a moot point if a few people had all the top notch gear, and the majority just had average gear. But as i walk through Jeuno, I see a majority of monks/samurais/ninjas with Jujitsu Gi, O. Kote, Fuma Kyahan which comes to around 7 million. I dont know how people make this money (probably from other job classes) But someone like myself doesnt have time to farm 7 million at level 40. Lets remember also, that if you do not have a static party you still will wait hours upon hours for an invite.

I really wish the economy is not the way it is. I dont want to spend a month constantly farming with the little time I have to enjoy the game. I really love many aspects of the game but the economy is tainting them all.

                  Re: Monk an expensive job?

if it is over 300k, it is probably not worth the effort getting it

Acc is important and most Acc is really cheap if you know where to get it

Not having the best gear is okay with monk, as the best gear right now could probably get you a couple of maxed crafts

                            Re: Monk an expensive job?

MNK is as expensive or a cheap as you want it to be basically. Your AF is one of the most useful in the game. The only peice of AF you probably wouldn't get away with wearing full time is the AF head. You could easily replace this with something far less expensive than emp pin if you wish. Crow beret comes to mind...

If you go cheap it will show in your damage though. I parse most of my pts on mnk and the last MNK pt I had I outdamaged the AF onry MNK by about 400-600damage per mob on average.

Edit: There are a few MUST have items though: Snipers, Brown Belt and jujitsu gi. If you can't be bothered to get these don't be a mnk ^^.
