Has anybody tried a static group (I imagine pickup groups wouldn't let you do this) with a monk tank? I think besides warrior, paladin and ninja, monk or samurai would work as a tank. This would clear up room for another DD and hate shouldn't be a problem with all the JA + constant damage. With the right gear I wonder if it'd work .

Keeping hate as a MNK tank is no problem, but staying alive is. MNK tanks do work, but only on a short term basis.
Most MNK gear has little DEF, and despite having high natural VIT, if the MNK wants to keep hate they can't sacrifice Attack or STR equipment to sub in more VIT. MNK do get Counter, but even with upwards of Counter+20 equipment you will not be doing it enough to compensate for the fact that you are getting hit for a ton of damage constantly.
MNK 'tanks' work best on the short term. We make excellent Trick partners, backup tanks, and in some cases pullers (rare, but it happens sometimes...).
You have high HP, but you will need to be chain-cured almost nonstop, which means that your healer will become the main tank in a big hurry no matter how much hate you think you are pulling as a MNK.
So in short, for an EXP party setup a MNK tank just will not work out. For random questing or something sure, but for EXP it all comes down to being as efficient as possible, and a MNK tank is pretty far down the efficiency scale for tanking.Vargas 75 MNK - Ragnarok (Retired)

As mentioned do to tons of JA's, and good damage, Monk doesn't have much trouble keeping hate either.
Regardless everyone knows how the game works, they don't do that so this don't work. Good luck finding people interested in trying.
In conclusion a dedicated monk, willing to put a good amount of gil into tank oriented gear probably could pull it off, against the right mobs.
Just watch out cause many mobs will own monks by dealing far too much damage, whereass others you will evade, and not get hit for overwhelming damage. It's possible, but not exactly ideal.

Or you could have mnk/nins along with other melee nins. Passing hate around is a skill most statics work out, so it's not that bad.
You might have to avoid xping on certain monsters, but hate passing is nothing new.

It's doable at least up to 50 or so...I've seen it done.
Most melee DDs can tank more than they are given credit for. I've main tanked as a DRG well into the high 40s and possibly early 50s (I don't remember too well). I've seen a SAM main tank at 60, and my LS friend has been in a party with a DRK main tank at 60 too.Pounce (RETIRED) Mithra Bastok R.7 Titan server

one thing is interresting about MNKs tanking though....
we are excellent tanks against groups of EM-T mobs, like 2-4 mobs.
Boost is a JA directed towards the self, which means that it gives hate for every mob you've hit so far. this is far better than Provoke when trying to get the hate of a group of mobs.
Counter works on all mobs attacking you head-on, which deals damage to mobs you haven't engadged.
Dodge... the effect makes a huge difference when a few mobs are attacking you at a time.
we never hear about putting -ga spells and AoE WSs to this use... it'd be interresting to try it.Check out this internet radio station!

If you have a bard, very nice gear, and don't fight real high ITs, it will work, maybe even work well. But that basically defeats the purpose of having a bard and of having a static, really... it's tough to get the kind of exp off of VTs-low IT since very few areas have enough of them for chains to last long enough. In my experience so far.
Also, will want to avoid certain mobs. MNK has high HP but as hard as some stuff can hit, even lower-level mobs are best avoided.Nusayb, Galka, Fairy Server- 63WAR,

I just recently made a Semi-Set with 2 other MNK, with a BRD up and coming. PT Setup is usually MNK MNK MNK BRD RDM WHM. I am the designated "Tank" out of us 3, although the others will quite obviously take it at times. (Gotta love them 400-500+ Raging Fists)
We are going to be PTing on Bones from 45-75. (With a few windows of 2~ or so levels on something else untill the next bones are viable)
Last night we had our first PT. We PTed behind Banishing Gate 3 in Garlaige Citadel next to the Sauromogue zoneline at level 45. MNK MNK MNK RDM WHM BRD
45-46 was a bit rough at first, mainly chain 3-4~ for around 200-275 exp. 46-47 we had our groove down and were now getting chain 5 for around 200-285 exp. 47-48 we tore them apart so fast we were starting to run out of mobs, and were easily chain 5 every time for 180-260 exp, also, Counterstance was now a viable option since they were starting to get to be Low IT. 48-@3k to 49, We killed them way too fast, it was starting to slow down the chains, Exp was 100-200 simply because we were killing too fast to hit chain 5.
I will be, as the "Main Tank" investing into Cross Counters, Scorpion Harness, Avengers Earrings, Aikito Koshita etc, the works, to improve my tanking ability even further. I will tank from my current level all the way to 75, whether it be on Bones or the filler mobs in-between.
Yes, MNK Tanks do need to steer clear of certain mobs though, expecially those with killer Tp Attacks. (Jet Stream and Sickle Slash come to mind)
All in all, It was the most fun I have had in a PT in a VERY long while, and I look forward to my next PT. MNK Tank can be done, and it can be done very effectively, it just takes a bit more planning than the rest. ^_^

Re: Static with a monk tank?
good luck with your static ^^
i thought i'd give people interested in monk tanking some food for thought based on my experiences
~ zen and the art of monk tanking ~
if you are curious please visit the link above ... i have embarked on a journey that i have yet to see anyone do
i intend to prove that monks can tank
i intend to breed monk tanks on all ffxi servers
for all you monk tanks out there i suggest the following:
* spit on defense gear ... experiment with gear that enhances your natural defensive capabilities ... visit link above for details
* do not ignore +agi ... it is your friend
* the biggest time expense in developing a monk tank is guard training ... guard MUST be trained seperately and MUST NOT be ignored ... if you do not have the will to keep guard capped, you will NEVER reach your full potential as a great monk tank
being a godly monk tank is not easy ... the encouragement you will receive from your peers will be near non-existent
i have learned much in my journey as a monk tank, not just about tanking, but i'm talking about a higher plane of thought ...
i cannot put it in words ... all i can say is, at a certain point in the monk tanking experience, you develop a certain sense of inner peace ... a 'zen' so to speak and at that point you are 'one' with monk tanking ... all your anxieties and questions fade and you just 'know' what you have to do
everything about monk tanking becomes blatantly simplistic at this point, but one can only experience this if they embark on their own monk tanking journey
monk tanking is not about 'eh .. lemme try monk tanking' ... it is about a 'calling'
those of you that hear this calling will have an inkling of what i am saying ... the rest of you will think i'm just insane
do you hear this calling?
i am here to give you that little nudge to tempt you into taking your first inevitable step
please step lively ~~

all you monk tanks out there that believe in my words please repost this in as many forums that you visit ... i have a head full of steam and i'm looking to spread the gospel by linking to my post link above ^^

Re: Static with a monk tank?
When I played , I had a Static PT with a monk tank. We used Monk/War, Monk/Thf, Bard/Whm , Whm/Blm, Red/Whm, and the 6th person was usually a pickup person. We did eventually get a thief but it actually slowed down our exp in .... whatever that tunnel connected to the dunes is called with the skele's. We exp'd from I'd say 61-70 or so with that PT. We would have continued if not for most of them quitting. Also later on in the game having 3 monk pt's in KRT was nice. I know chain 16 or so isn't all that impressive now. But it was then. Anyway, Monks can tank if they want to.75Mnk/37thf/38war/32whm Retired
