  • HNM Strategy.

Hey guys, currently a level 63 Monk and probably shouldn't be worrying about this stuff yet. I'm currently working on leveling some subs (/nin, /thf and /whm). But I'm curious, which HNMs require which subjobs? Will I always be MNK/WHM on HNMs? or will I get to melee as MNK/NIN on certain ones? I'm curious and would like any high level Monk to shed some light for me.^^

    {Thank You.}

whm is pretty much the best against any hnm, subbing whm means you get blink, stoneskin, cures, that's to protect yerself (if you get hate, and it does happen sometimes) and raise1, it's good to have if a fallen member needs to be raised asap (thou yer mp pool is like crap, you might need some astral rings). Meleeing is really a bad idea, not only you are risking yerself from AoEs, you are also giving them TP to do their WSs.

i would advice buying pride staff as soon as possible coz they are very rare (at least on my server) I missed out the staff and i have to stick with a crappy water staff

side note: fighting HNM is actually boring -_-, most of the time you are just boosting and then chi blast, very simple strat

Im in the process of getting whm up atm, im looking forward to having it capped considering my dmg record on Chi Blast is 1100 Vs Genbu WITHOUT whm sub, and no Sun-Ate.

57+68 mnd (+40 from equip, +10 from Goblin Mushpot, +18 from Etude)

I think doing damage with it comes before tanking the HNMs, id rather leave the tanking the Nins and Plds till I can be bothered leveling nin.

im not sure if im understanding this right, but i hadnt really taken HNM's into consideration. Monks are just supposed to chi-blast every 3 minutes and be a gimpy healer for the 2:59 between that?

Sorry m8, that's just how it goes

If chances are one million-to-one that something will go wrong, there's still a 50-50 chance it won't..

Note that not all HNM are like this, although you often do more damage this way.

Think of it this way. You could melee a HNM for 3 minutes, and get off one or two WS in that timeframe, and it would often be less than the damage you can do with Chi Blast (especially on HNM with high evasion or defence - which is a lot of them).

You can get in there and melee on some HNM, but it all depeneds on which ones. Besides, you have spent 70+ levels beating on stuff, its time to mix it up a bit and play differently.

Redlimit your not one of those people who are sitting there and chi blasting: Bune, Simurgh, Roc, Hakutaku, Charby, etc. etc.

My ls is just now doing gods and the abjuration dropping HNM's which are the only ones I chi blast.

The rest Monks are one of the best damage dealers on.

But Chi Blasting in a rotation with like 4 other monks is really alot of fun actually, so im looking forward to that.

But in 3 minutes meleeing any of the HNM's (with the exception of those who drop abjurations *KB, Aspin, Fafnir, gods etc.). I do more then I would ever do with chi blast.

I went ahead and took it upon myself to test both sides of the monk HNM strat-waters 2 days ago when i went to fight Roc. I was subbing WAR and this mob had pretty high evasion, but i was able to hit him suprisingly easy, and suprisingly hard to boot (around 100~ a hit, landing probably half of my hits). our tank was a nin so holding hate was a challenge for him, but just my standard attacks were enough to sway the attention of the mob. after a few minutes of meleeing, dropping a dragon kick on the mob, and getting hit for about 35 seconds, i decided to try chi-blasting. this was sort of fun too, because i was looking forward to seeing what my 3 minutes of hitting ctrl+1 every 15 seconds had wrought, and it was usually cool ^^ i did 590~ each time with only my AF-head and 2 +2mnd rings on. i decided that it was probably better to risk getting hit a few times while meleeing over doing those gimpy chi's, so i meleed the rest of the fight.

sorry if that doesnt really stick with the topic at all, i just wanted to throw out some of my personal experience on the topic

Just some ideas from a friend who saw a MNK/SAM at KB.

Mnk was Chi Blasting + Meditating. Elv and had Chi gear when Chi Blasting, and switched to ACC/STR for WSing.

He saw the damage and said it was pretty good. Don't really see this combo because usually NIN/WHM for HNMs. Could be a good alternative.

Hmm that would be a compromise.

You'd lose the added mnd from /whm sub, + the 7 mnd from pride staff.

                      Sounds like fun though =X

                          For subjob I suggest:

                          Chi Blast
                          /nin : Kirin, King Behemoth
                          /whm : Genbu, Suzaku, Seiryu, Fafnir/Nidhogg, Aspidochelone

                          Melee
                          /war or /thf : everything else

The reason for /nin is you will probably be doing a good portion of the kiting on those enemies.
Watch me delete a year's worth of effort
