I started in bastok, got to lvl 5 and made some money auctioning crystals, from that i was able to buy a pair of knuckles and some armor.

well should i continue doing this? or is there a better place with more exp and more money for me to gain. Bastok is the only place i have been in the game.

STay around there a little longer. Might want to try climbing one of the hills, for better exp. Goblins up there will aggro, and Sheep will link. Around lv 7-8, try Dangruf Wadi, the zone in is located at the western end of South Gustaberg.

You can travel any time you want reguardless of level, but you won't find yourself needing to leave the safety of Bastok/N. Gusta/S. Gusta and the surrounding areas until you're at least 15 or so. You aren't missing anything or doing anything wrong at all
