  • 70+ MNKs: A Merit Point discussion.

    What this thread is not:
This is not a thread discussing how much a waste of time Merit Points are or are not. I don't want your opinion on the act of spending time getting Merit Points, that's for another thread.

    What this thread is:
The nature of this thread is for high-level MNKs (typically in the 70-75 range do people get to experience HNM encounters) with actual endgame experience (such as fighting HNMs using Chi Blast as their main source of damage) to impart their opinion on the wisest way to invest Merit Points.

With that out of the way, let's get to the meat of the discussion:

One can say with a degree of confidence that Merit Points are almost directly implemented to enhance your endgame experiences. The bonuses off these points are attainable only by highest levels, and thus are mostly wasted in EXP situations, and effectively pointless for farming (because you typically farm mobs you can defeat without issue at high levels).

If you accept the above observations to be true (that Merit Points don't help appreciably with your main character in EXP situations or in farming), we move onto Merit Points and endgame encounters with respect to MNKs.

A MNK is effectively a backline Chi Blast nuker on many HNMs (particularly very hard to hit ones such as Byakko, HNMs with ridiculous defense such as Asphicodelene (sp?) , or HNMs with nasty AE attacks such as Kirin, King Behemoth, etc.

What I am getting at is this: Do you, as an endgame Monk, believe the wisest and most effective use of Stat Merit Points would be diverting all Stat Merit Points into the MIND stat to further along your Chi Blast damage and fulfill a large portion of your endgame role as a damage dealer via Chi Blast?

    So, let's discuss!

    Main Job(s): 75 MNK
    Secondary Job(s): 38 WAR / 38 WHM / 37 THF
    San d'Oria Rank: 10
    Zilart Mission: 14
    Promathia Mission: 1
Dynamis Interloper: JEU / WIN / BAS / SAN
Current Status: Returning to my old favorite; the Monk. Also awaiting my new PC so I can try out World of Warcraft.

I see MNK as one of the harder jobs to take advantage of the Merit Point system. For a lot of jobs, what stats you want to improve are very cut and dry.

MNK however have some more interesting choices. Do you increase STR for more damaging H2H? Do you increse your MND to do more damage versus some HNM?

MND equipment is a lot easier to come by than STR equipment, but any merit points you put into STR are totally wasted when you whip out MND gear and Chi Blast away on an HNM. Likewise, anything spent on MND is not used for regular fighting / ballista / farming / etc.

Personally I haven't started the merit system (and don't really have much drive to anyway). From the sounds of things though, you can only raise a single stat so much using this system, so with a full 10 merit points you would have to spread them out a bit.

I would think my priority would be MND, STR, HP.

yea like what red said, you cant really focus on 1 stat since there's a limited number you can add and it depends on which activities you do more frequently, HNM fights dont come around much on my server and i've been spending much time playin around in ballista and farming, so i'll go for STR > MND > watever

well im not high lvls like most of the posters on this topic but wouldnt str be better because after the new expansion Chains of Promathia comes out there is going to be new mobs to fight and stuff.

so there will be more partying to do and stuff so you would want str since you will be doing more of that????

i could be totally wrong but that seems like what i would buff up if i could.

So far I've used both my merit points for str. Good thing about the merit system is that if your not happy with the str you just wasted your merits on, you can get your merit points back for other stats.

To be honest I haven't really fought a lot of HNM's since it's kinda boring to me,when I did fight Genbu and tiger god Byakko(sp?) I had enough mnd from my armor and other stuff to do decent amount of damage.
            Have fun.

The thought of using my merit points for raising MND disgusts me. I'm putting them all into STR. In my opinion, there is more than enough +MND equipment (more than I care to buy) available for Chi Blast.

                dynamis is endgame... right...
you don't chi blast in dynamis as much so i say STR and DEX
i dont know why but i think balance means a lot in this game

I agree, especially being an Elvaan mnk, but I also see 1 priority you guys don't see so important? That being VIT for chakra, and overall defence.

My priority is STR > VIT > DEX

Unless HNM's in the next expansion can be melee'd if you're looking at the 'Best' option, it's plain as day that +Mnd would be the choice, More mnd more dmg, even if you are elvaan ... more mnd more dmg, can't deny it. For me though I chose for my own entertainment +str because when I melee in Merit exp pt's or other things ... I like to hit the hardest. ;p

i guess your choice on merit points depends on which endgame takes priority... whether it be dynamis or HNM hunts
however for the MND+ boosting, it only affects that one single /ja of chi blast where it only makes a miniscule difference of 100-300 dmg at the most i would say.
also, most HNM's aside from a few are melee'd, therefore even then i would choose STR+ where the dmg/time is a far greater improvement and more beneficial

Well, while I haven't started the merit system, it was my understanding that merit stats are permanent on your character and are applied on all jobs... if you are playing a lower level job they just don't show up as much.

With that being the case, and knowing how much +mnd a galka has access to (RSE and other equipment), I think I'll stick with combat stats to help any other job I would like to try.

People say mnks have access to a lot of +str gear, but ask your friendly neibhorhood BLM how much +INT he has, or your next door thief how much +DEX he has, and you'll see that monks have a lot more to worry about in regards to their primary battle stats... so my emphasis will be str>dex>whatever.

When I walk into an HNM battle with +eleventy billion MND on items, I'm guessing even another 5 will barely increase my damage, and considering how scarce merit points are... I'd prefer to see the bonus added to things like my standard attacks and weaponskills for Dynamis and lower DEF HNMs than a nuke that has a 3:00 recast time.

Mostly off topic . . . sorry, but one of the many reasons i'm glad i picked elvaan. . . Lots of MND ^^, and with my sub-whm all ready to go, those HNM's better watch out, cause i'm coming for them

Back on topic- I'm gonna have to go with Jay on this one . . . especially since I have plenty of MND already, i'll be boosting STR most likely. I really could care less about the shortcomings of elvaan, dex, agi or int. . . i don't have much, but I don't miss it either.
