Sorry if this has already been discussed.

My foray into staves began when I had simultaneously maxed out my hand-to-hand skill for my level and obtained a misery staff though a quest. I was about to sell it when I noticed: "hey, monks can use staves!" So I gave it a whack. Unfortunately as many of you know it kinda sucked. But I thought, well I've never used it before and I wasn't able to level my hands anyway so what the hell? Why not?

However, I'm noticing now that even though I've bought a better staff and my skill is pushing 40, using a staff is not really effective. So before I abandon it altogether, has anyone had any good experience using a staff with a monk? I realize that just because you can use a weapon doesn't mean you should.... But c'mon, why would they let monks use them in the first place? Some staves have additional status effects so maybe that could be useful. Let me know what you think

Eh, it's a toy. Useful for leveling parry for your sub, though, while you skill it up.

My staff skill is 122 and club skill 100, both I just decided to raise out of boredom.

MNK do get access to both Stave and Club quest WS, although you will never ever use a Stave or Club in an EXP PT or any other serious situation.

There are a few reasons to level them up though...

      -It can be fun
-Its usually a lot easier to level Stave and Club on MNK than on other jobs (BLM, SMN, WHM) since you can stand in the line of fire and not care

Some Saves have fun effects, and MNK have access to a good variety of them actually. We get considerably less good Clubs though. Shellbuster, Titan's Cudgel, 71 CP San/Bast Clubs, and of course the allmighty Kraken are the only clubs we get worth mentioning.

I think it's unfortunate that monks have such a piss-poor club selection (best club we can use, other than kraken of course, is the Club of Trials). Our staff selection is second only to...blm/smn, who aren't even EX on staff WS (although both sub whm usually, so that's not an issue). Monk not being able to use relic staff, when we're tied with war for second best skill with staff, is kinda retaded imo. Not that it'd be any good for dealing damage anyway, but...I dunno, some games have, y'know, OPTIONS for what weapons you can use.

ahhh, dont snap at her man...she's right...

this is starting to get a little frustrating...

you can read my other posts under "parties better after howling fists"?

there really arent many options in this game when compared to the other mmorpgs out on the market...part of the fun in mmorpgs is creating a powerful, unique character...this game forces us to become narrowminded and follow "cookie cutter" job classes and strategies...

there really is no way to be unique...period.

Would it be incorrect to use clubs and staves in a pt? I'm a WS whore, I like to be able to use as much of a job's full range of weaponry as possible. As a War, I like to use the weakest weapons first and as they cap, move to the stronger weapons in my inventory. I've noticed that weapons skills cap so fast, that it seems a waste to not swap weapons as one goes along. I'm not good at soloing, so it takes me forever to cap a weapon skill when not in a pt.

has anyone tried a Revenging staff? never any for sale on the AH, and if you have is the HP drain a 100% effect like other weapons/arrows?

Leveling staff can be fun, nothing like making everyone else feel bad when you bust out a 2k+ full swing.

Full Swing at 300% is a sick WS. I forget what kind of a damage modifier it gets, but you will hit for over 2000 damage almost every time. I never got Stave up that high, but I saw others doing it and it just destroys enemies.

Iron-Splitter is a very high damaging stave, although you don't see it much at the AH (and it can be expensive). A good old Eight-Sided Pole works as well, and they are uber cheap.
