Hello and greetings with my introductory post on this forum ^^
this is a topic which has affected me as well.
i am fortunate to level with a set (static) party of linkshell friends, but due to scheduling problems, we all had to take a hiatus from leveling regularly around the time we hit 40.
luckily, this left me with a lot of time to farm.
it is no exaggeration, at level 40, you are pushed to become "the million dollar monk".
the first thing i got were my Jujitsu Sitabaki (4k) and Jujitsu Gi (120k).
i am still wearing my Federation Kyahan (i like the attack bonus, and i just havent worried too much about getting the Fuma Kyahan yet)
i just got my Ochiudo's Kote last night, for 530k.
back when i hit the level where i could first equip them, they cost at least 100k less.
they have sold for as much as 600k on my server.
i still ended up paying 80k more than my wife did for a pair (yes, she has some too, for her ninja)
i had been wearing the Federation Tekko for a long time, but i got wise and cashed in some of my conquest points for a pair of Combat Caster's Mitts. they offered equal defense (if i recall) and a +5 attack bonus... not much compared to the fancy red Kote, but more than i had without them! and they are "free"!
(i also used conquest points to buy the Mercenary Captain's Headgear, which i only wear when i go into BCNM or leveling battles; but for daily use (and farming) i still like to wear my Federation Hachimaki since i dislike the way the headgear looks)
I haven't yet decided if i will save up for and buy my brown belt, or if i will quest for it. i hear the quest is a major headache, so... i'm not sure yet what i will do.
I sold my Impact Knuckles and got a pair of Mythril Knuckles +1, which cost me only 75k (i hear from people on other servers that they tend to cost much more and be difficult to find)
I have a set of Beetle Earrings +1, which i think i paid about 30k for (can't remember if that was 30k total, or 30k each... it was a while ago)
where did i get the money?
well, first thing to realize, is that i didnt get it all at once. each piece was purchased one at a time, often weeks apart.
it isnt necessary to get everything at once. in fact, im not sure it's even possible.
now, because i level with a set group, and none of us have been leveling for a while (not those jobs anyway), i have LOTS of time to farm.
i also quested recently for my RSE, and sold it.
this was a great boon for me. the elvaan RSE isnt that useful to me (unless i were a mage), so selling it was a great way to gain some gil.
RSE gloves: 50k
RSE boots: 50k
RSE pants: 40k
RSE body: 50k
i also did the quest for the ninja scroll of Utsusemi: Ichi and sold that for 110k
(while i was at it, i quested for a few other ninja scrolls and sold those too, but for much smaller amounts)
I invested about 50k in a stack of tree cuttings, from which i am growing tree saplings, stacks of which can sell for 130k.
I have also been doing BCNM40 battles with groups from my linkshell. i will never go do this with a random group of people who i do not know and implicitly trust, but it can be a fine way to earn some highly-sought-after items to sell (like scrolls of Erase and Phalanx, etc).
we sell it all, pool the money together, and distribute it between the 6 participants.
there have been times when i have felt like i would never be able to earn all the gil i needed, but one odd thing seems to happen.... if you save it dilligently, then once you have a large amount (like 100k or 200k), it begins to feel like the gil is coming in more easily.
when you only have 50k in your pocket, and think about needing to earl 1 million, it seems very daunting.
but when you look, and realize that you have over 200k now, then you suddenly feel a bit empowered, you see some results of your hard work, and begin to realize that it is possible, with dedication.
and the rewarding feeling of pride in yourself when you have these great things to wear, and knowing that they were won through your hard work and dedication (rather than cheating or something) is a great feeling indeed.
i know that some people, like my wife, really dislike being examined by other players, but i dont mind when someone examines me; because if they are impressed by what they see, i have every reason to be proud of my hard work.
besides, when i was just starting out, i remember looking enviously at higher level monks, impatient for the day when i too would be able to wear the neat stuff i saw on them.
