  • MNK Dmg/Delay Questions... + More

Newbie MNK here... well... I was a MNK on NA release, but switched to WAR /hides.

I'm not very familiar with how the dmg/delay on MNK weapons work. I understand that they all seem to have: Dmg+X Dly+Y

However, figuring out which weapons have the best dmg/delay ratio for swords is cake... just divide dmg/delay, compare to other swords, and then figure out if the extra stats on the weapon are useful.

But, how do MNKs figure out which weapon is best? My MNK is currently 14 and I'm using those Brass Bagh+1 which seem to be the best buy pre-14. The Strike Baghnakhs (Dmg+5 Delay+42 Dex+2) seem to be a great buy for 14. However, I fail to see anything better until Baghnakhs+1 @ 24.

Also, are those Haste+ belts a good buy?

That's all I got. I'd appreciate any information you can offer

As a MNK, I always went for the higher damage weapons, even as an Elvaan. At level 40 your base delay is 360. Throwing 86 on top of that is not going to be big deal. Let's compare the Himantes (+4 DMG +48 DLY) to the Mythril Knuckles (+9 DMG, +96 DLY). You can find the damage to delay ratio of MNK weapons as well. There is a formula for calculating base damage for Hand-to-Hand:

    (((((HTH Skill) / 9.1) * 0.9) + 3) + WEAPDMG)

Let's plug in the number for both for Himantes and the Mythril Knuckles for a level 40 MNK with capped HtH skill:

    Himantes: 123 / 9.1 * 0.9 + 3 + 4 = 19
    Mythril Knuckles: 123 / 9.1 * 0.9 + 3 + 9 = 24

The base delay for a level 40 MNK with Martial Arts II is 360. Add in the weapons' delay:

    Himantes = 408
    Mythril Knuckles = 446

So, just divide Damage by Delay and multiply by 100:

    Himantes = 4.66/sec
    Mythril Knuckles = 5.38/sec

You should also take into account that these numbers are based solely on a linear comparison. In truth, the actual way damage is dealt is based upon a logarithmic curve. I refer you to this post:

    http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/sho...threadid=40812

... for more information about how damage is calculated. I think that this example, and the information presented in the above post pretty much prove that higher damage weapons are the best ones to pick for Monks.

As far as "those haste belts" go, which ones do you mean? If I were you, I'd use the MNK specific belts: Purple, Brown, Black (you wish ;D).

Thanks Aeynrieus! That kind of info is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'm a numbers kind of guy.

You say that the "bare fists" delay is 360 @ level 40. Would you mind telling me what the base delay is at other levels? Is it only affected by the Martial Arts job trait?

Base H2H Delay w/o Martial Arts Trait: 480
        Monk lv1-MA1: 400
        lv16-MA2: 380
        lv31-MA3: 360
        lv46-MA4: 340
        lv61-MA5: 320

Haste lowers your total delay by a % of the whole.
IIRC, the spell lowers it by 33%.
The belts Monks can use work without haste being cast on us,
but it works in the same way the spell does.
The Brown Belt says 'Haste+ 8%',
so it lowers your total delay by that much oon its own.
These things stack, so if you get as much Haste gear as you can and get the spell cast on you, you can cut your delay in half...sometimes more.
        Rude, but not wrong. ;x

Good, now I can tell how much delay I start with, thanks for the info, Lone Dragon!

Mind if I bore you some more?

I know that H2H is does good damage to bone. Can I get a breakdown of what H2H is weak against and what it is strong against?

Monk H2H is weak against Crabs, Beetles. Strong vs Bones. As far as I know neutral against everything else. I personally haven't noticed too much of a difference though - fighting beetles in Garlaige I was still doing more damage than most other melees, whereas vs bats I was doing alot more than other melee...

All physical attacks are weak against Elemental and Slime types.
H2H is more effective against Bones, Pots, Dolls, and Scorpions.
H2H is least effective against Crabs, Ghosts, and Beetles.

The crab and beetle weaknesses can be overcome with a large Strength stat boost.

Yes. Delay is expressed in milliseconds, thus, 100 delay = 1 second.
