  • Monk/Samurai

    I'm wondering if Monk/Samurai is even worth considering since the TP nerf. I've already leveled Samurai to 32, I don't know if I will bother taking it further. I used the Monk/Samurai combo in Ballista with no level cap and I found it still pretty strong. I'd like to know other peoples opinions about it?

    Actually, I think that /SAM will now be more worth it because of the TP nerf. There won't be anymore multi-hit WS spamming to recharge half your TP guage, so those who sub SAM will really be ahead. You still probably won't be able to WS as often as you could, though. It's very easy to get aggro that way~ www

      you know you get gimped meditate if you sub sam

      anywayz, i'm pretty sure a mnk wif war sub can get tp as fast as a sam.

      only situation you want to sub sam is for HNM fights, or when you are agianst something you cant hit pretty well.

        Yeah I would only sub SAM in a situation where my regular attacks were next to useless (HNM, bosses, etc).

        The rest of the time WAR is better I think. The multiple attacks, Berserk and even passive DEF and ATT up bonues help out tremendously.

        War Cry at 70 dosen't hurt either.

          I like the idea of mnk/sam past 60.. but sadly my sam is only 10 lol

          Has TP nerf really hurt us monk much? I didn't notice much changes >_>;

            it really has not effected me at all. Maybe for farming but thats about it. When I am EXPing I never did depend on weaponskill spam to get good damage. These days I am always doing a fusion skillchain with the PLD i group with
            70 MNK / 50 DRK / 35 WAR / 33 THF / 32 BLM / 17 NIN / 15 RNG / 15 DRG / 12 RDM

              TP nerf

              farming yes, xp party not much

              since in xp parties post70 you wont be using asuran fists coz you'll be fighting skeletons and you'll wanna create light chain using dragon kick and the tp return for it is same as always 11tp.

              there is however one case i was asked to do darkness chain against the cockatrice in kuflat tunnel, since light chain does crap dmg on them (81 light ohh the pain), yes asuran fists is gravitation and can end a darkness chain wif distortion.

              like what ramen said, the dmg done by spamming ws and dmg done by serk/double atk, sneak trick ws are pretty much the same but by spamming ws you gather more hate this tends to make the tank hard to hold aggro meaning you'll be stressing the healers and will most likely result in more downtime.

                mm... TP nerf...? I went to castle oztroja yesterday to camp my kote again, and to look for fuma to sell... I can use WS pretty often... so I didn't really realise any difference than when the TP nerf wasn't in O.o;;

                  Thanks for your replies everyone, but I think we've gotten a little off topic. I don't want this to turn into a discussion on how TP nerf affects monks, or what subjob to chose for monk. So I would really like to know what people experienced with Monk/Samurai think about subbing Samurai now.

                    Seems more like a TP bugfix than a nerf.

                      Ok I'll put in my input because I am a lvl 44 Monk, and 42 Samurai. I've been lvling Monk with a Samurai subjob since lvl 30.

                      Monk/sam is an interesting combo, no doubt. You get Third eye, which goes hand in hand with Chi Blast at 41 for pulling, which is a bonus since I get hit for like 100 dmg on a pull. You also get TP store. I recently have been camping lizzy. I had to sub rng so I didn't have this TP store ability. As I killed the mobs around me I did notice a big difference in how fast my TP rises. But, as fun and interesting mnk/sam is, and for how much I'd love to have not lvled a subjob ever again, its just not worth it.

                      Post 60, sure I'll be all set since my samurai is 42, but until then, I have alot of subjob lvling to do.
                      I just feel so gimp. Stat boosts are Ok, but doing only 170 dmg with Raging fists? Gah! I'll wait till I can sneak attack + Focus + Raging fists on it, won't do much more dmg but its enough to keep me happy.

                      Needless to say I'll be lvling thf, I've already started. 1) for the gil 0/10 on lizzy, and 2) for the subjob. I'm sure my samurai will appreciate not having monk subjob anymore

                      So yea, its fun, but have warrior or thf lvled up as well. Fit to the pts needs.

                      Sorry I know this sounds kinda discouraging, and im not saying mnk/sam doesn't work, cause it does, but after being lvl 43-44 for almost 2 months, I need a better option.

                        MNK/SAM may be good, since you can't get infinite tp for asuran fist anymore, so with meditate, you can probably do double WS for fun.. but for attack power, I still think /WAR is over SAM, the double attack does help

                          mank/samurai

                          Lv71mnk/sam here, works just fine like it alot.
                          I did zm with a 75mnk/war when I was lv70mnk/sam, we get tp at the same rate i checked it (and thats without meditate).
                          If u have brown belt and sole sushi+1 gives you a nice tp rush, wonder how much more with black belt 12% haste.
                          Mnks are monsters either way you spin it.
                          You will like you sam sj, I do and have no complaints cept whats up with 3rd eye!
                          If you bout to spam 2nd ws use 3rd eye helps abit.
                          Have fun. :spin:
