  • Monk/???

When i get ffxi (im waiting for the ps2 version cause my computer was out dated 2 mounths after i bought it:dead: )...where was i?

oh, yes...When i get ffxi, im going to be a Monk (since im a big fan of Shaolin monks, and i like fighting with my fists) the question is, what do you guys think is the best sub job for a LONE Monk?

    1. Bard (im leaning to that one more)
    2. Summoner (It makes me feel powerful to tame power things...)
    3. Beast Master (I like animals more than i do ppl {except my mom, she's the best, and if u call me a mamma's boy......its true })
    or
4.Ranger (I'd like to punch kick and shot stuff{with a gun} in ffxi)

I know these are jobs that must be unlocked but i dont want to use up a lot of time unlocking all of them...

Thanks for info (if given any)

    ....i type to much....

You can do anything subbed as a lone monk honestly. Monks are good solos for lvl 1-10.

However, before you start the game thinking that you'll be able to solo through the entire game as a monk, lemme warn you: This game is skewed entirely towards party play and teaming up. Bard, whitemage, or even blackmage subs can do fine, if you're going ot have a taru as race, your mp will be even better. I've seen some do redmage and they were quite content.

However, again, monks are not meant to start partying with mage subjobs. In fact, by the time you'll have earned a subjob, you'll understand the monk's role in a party (i hope you will by then)

The whitemage subjob helps you heal yourself, and do real well solo for a bit.

But if you plan on starting the game with a monk, then i suggest you subjob with war, thief. You'll want to subjob as soon as you get it (level 18), and you wont have option to sub an advjob yet. War gives you a few good stats, including provoke, which alot of parties want for you to backup tank.
Thief gives a few good stats, including high dex, and once you get sneak attack, your weaponskills are never the same.

thanks for the advice (i will most certainly use it)

about the tarutaru thing.....at first i wanted to be an Elvaan(becuase of they're tally tallness and serious looking faces), but as i see the taru taru screenshots.....i wanna be tarutaru more cause they look cool in the variouse armors....

the problem is, when i play mmorpgs, i like to be the big tough guy everyone looks up to (eg Aaron in FFX) i dont wanna be one those galkin thingys though....they're too big (to me). So im stuck on being an Elvaan or a tarutaru....

anymore more advice i can squeeze outta you?

If you're set on monk, elvaans are far superior monks to tarutaru. Their stats are more geared to what a monk uses.

For soloing, you'll want a whm sub. The last time I soloed was at level 38 (with level 19 whm sub, of course!) in Yhoator jungle vs. mandragoras (very very weak enemy type). I was able to churn out about 1600 xp per hour (would be roughly a level every 4-4.5 hours). That's about as much xp/hour as a bad group (good groups at that level do more in the 3-4k/hour range).

The most important thing to remember about soloing is that it does not keep your skills capped (past level 12 or so, where you can't kill even matches solo anymore). This means that you could, for example, solo from 18-22 in dangruf wadi. At level 22 you would still be no more effective at killing the SAME monsters than you were at 22, except for a few more HP, possibly better armor, etc., but you wouldn't evade attacks any better, hit any more often, hit harder, etc.. This is where the forced-party system of this game really takes its toll.

lol, i guess partying is really important in this game

i like to party once in a while, but not to offten...

          oh well...

i know elvaans make better monks than tarutarus but the MP comes to mind when it comes to the subjobs i want

im gonna go look for that FFXI calculator thingy..

On the plus side, partying in this game is possibly the most fun I've seen it implimented in any game, so it's not nearly as bad as it sounds on the surface.

Samurai also makes a good sub job for most melee damage dealing classes. Basically, that class lets you gain TP very quickly, which allows you use weapon skills very frequently. HtH weapon skills are actually quite handy. Combo and Raging Fists are staples of Monk damage dealing, pumping out multiple attacks onto a single target. One Inch Punch does high damage, and opens you up to more skill chains, while Shoulder Bash is a universal interupt with a short warm up time. I believe Shoulder Bash may also reset Hate, but I haven't been able to test that yet.

However, you will certainly want to level Theif up to at least lvl 15. One thing you will bo doing a lot of solo, is hunting money. Theives have job bonuses that increase the amount of loot and money you get from a kill, and you get the first one at lvl 15.

              p.s a monk with weak sub= junk
A monk with weak equitment= junk

remember monks are one of the melee jobs which means you may have a hard time getting invites into a party. unless you have a set pt or real life friends playing with you then you're good to go without having a hard time getting 1k xp an hr.

                  ok, thnx for the info

ill most likely sub theif...or something daring like summoner or ranger....

if im successful i shall be famous! just like on other mmorpgs...(well actually only about 20 ppl rememberber me as the street proformer (in MuOnline, Rune Scape, and Conquer Online)

so if i cant street proform, ill rist 13 bucks a mounth on being the monk with a gun or the monk that can summon stuff....

or the monk that sings:spin: :spin: :spin: :spin: :spin:

i think im a good enough gamer to pull it off (besides im making a multi game clan on Chapions of Norrath, so i'll have plenty of ppl to party with...but i'll mostly solo looking for gold, fishing, and cooking

man i gotta stop typinhg O.O

okay im gonna stop now....no now!

i'm warning you the whole ima solo thing might change when you actually play this game and can't get to 15 without a pt

and i'm also going to tell you imho the only sub for an xp churning pt as monk is warrior

I disagree Thark I subbed War for most of my monkie day's.

But I after partying with alot of MNK/THF from lvl 33-39 I would say during that range /THF is far better.

Because w/ sneak attack + Backhand Blow you will be doing damage upwards of 200+ on IT beetles in Altepa as compared with 100-140 with combo and berserk. But after raging fists I see no reason to sub thf anymore.
