  • MNK/??? - Can anyone help?

OK... here's the problem... I'm FINALLY getting FFXI next week, and I want to me a MNK (I've loved every monk/martial arts using character in every game I've ever played) but, I was wondering what I should sub it with when I get to level 18. I know it's a little early to ask, but when I start, I want to get a good jump on both. Right now, from what I've read, I'm thinking THF... any ideas? Thanks!

id say either thief, or samurai.

thief will give you better evasion, good money/items, and they're dex/agi based which helps with a mnk.

samurai your TP gauge will fly up and youll be able to use weapon skills more often

personally im a monk and im going either MNK/THF or THF/MNK, judging by the poll i put up, its looking like MNK/THF

      Thanks!

Thanks for the help! I'll take that into consideration... I'm probably going to take THF. Thanks again!

WAR is also a very good sub for MNK, too...if only because you get provoke.

        What to level next? (DRK!)

          MNK/WAR...

I heard that MNK/WAR are pretty good, but the provoke thing... I heard that MNKS make bad tanks... like I said before, I haven't played the game (yet), but I heard that if your going to be a tank, be a class with a higher defense and a shield, like a WAR or a PAL... but then again, I have NO previous experience with the game and I know NOTHING, just saying what I heard...

Even when not being a pure tank, provoke is handy to keep the mob off casters while the pure tank has a chance to regain the mobs attention.

Provoke takes 30 seconds to refresh, so if the tank provokes and the casters nuke like crazy right after and the mob goes to them, you can provoke and save the day.

Monks arent terrible tanks just because of the lesser armor and lack of shields, we have the single most HP job-wise over any class in the game, plus you add high evasion and counter attack, we can really handle being swatted at for a good while.

                Good to know!

I'm thankful for all the good info! WAR seems like another good subclass choice. Looks like I'm going to have to level up on a bunch of different classes, huh?

This is a little off-topic, but which would be better suited for a 3-4 member party... MNK/SAM or MNK/WAR?

I myself am subbing WHM with MNK. The only probobly I really see with it so far is that I have VERY little MP. However it is much easier to solo when you are able to heal yourself. But when I get my advanced job I'm gonna be subbing monk and proboly when I do go back to being a monk sub my main job which will be dragoon. They are both damage dealers so that way I'll be able to do lots and lots of damage!
Destiny is calling...will I be able to answer?

I'm new to the game. Would a MNK/DRK be a very bad idea?

I like MNK/WAR because as someone else pointed out, I can provoke things off of the mages when the WAR has just used Provoke and can't use it again for 30 seconds. He can usually get Agro back off of me, and the mages can still cast while I am getting beat on.

As to HP, that is the reason for this class. Folks say that the Warrior should be the last person standing when the fight goes bad, but that never happens. In groups I am in I have always been the last or one of the last people to die. On two very bad occasions I and a monk friend were both alive and KILLED the mobs after all our friends (including WAR) went down.

                        HP over AC for me

The problem with using MNKs as tanks is that while they have high HP, their pathetic armor means:

                          a) your mages will be burning an excessive amount of mana healing you

                          and/or

                          b) you will spend an unreasonable amount of downtime waiting for MNK to heal, or mages to get mana

MNKs are not good primary tanks.

I started as Warrior cause i heard thats a god sub for monk so i got that to 22
(I don't have to level sub for a while and as soon as monk hit 10 i have provoke which usually makes it easier to find partys)

Then i started levelling monk and Provoke is very useful i'd say.. and though monks don't make great tanks they make decent ones at low levels cause warriors dont get that much better armor but anyways.. if you sub warrior you can be backup tank for a decent while.. but after level 25 or so you should avoid provoke unless its necessary..

When i got to 30 i thought it would be nice to level thf cause i felt poor and it seemed like a cool job with steal and sneak-attack and all.. i am now sub Thf and i like it alot, when Monk is level 30 (thf 15) you can use sneak-attack and though not that powerful(when thf sub) it still adds up nicely with Combo so thats a nice job-setup at 30..

and imo best job combos would be Mnk/war, Mnk/thf, Mnk/sam

I do both war and thf because I think they both make great subs. Thf it's easy to see how sneak attack and such would be useful. But don't forget warriors get Double Attack at 25 and Physical Attack UP at 30. So you could be double attacking as a 50mnk/war plus with war as a sub you get more str then as mnk/thf so your average hit would do more dmg.
