Lvling up Guard skill?

I looked at the Mnk chart and guard skill, being the unqiue to Mnks is at A

How do you Raise this?

My hand to hand is like 27
and my evade is at 24

My Guard is at 7. I rarely use/get guard points and usually on easy level enemy. What should I do to lvl this up? Use a Staff or Club?

guard is like shield, or parrying skill, you only guard some of the time and thus it wont raise very often but when it does it will be like .3-.5. I find that it raises most when I stop leveling and nm hunt or something for a while, mainly because after 30ish a monk shouldn’t tank unless absolutely necessary so I wont have an opportunity to do it much while lvlin. atm mine at ~75, of course my h2h is at 123...
-btw if ur wondering what guard does, it takes whatever dmg you would take and lower it significantly, srry I don’t know the formula

To raise your guard skill, you need to figure out which level your guard is currently at. So... my guard right now is about 80.

3(X-1)+6=80, x=23-2/3.

So now that I know that my guard skill is up to about Lv. 24 cap, I go and find some lv. 24-30 monsters. Go and aggro one, then disengage. It should hit you a fair amount, but you should be able to guard a fair amount too. Your guard skill will only go up if the mob is at the same level of your stunted skill or higher. You should just have a greater chance of leveling it with monsters around your cap level. once your skill has leveled up a bit, move to the next bracket for it. Once you are close to your cap, you go back to regular fighting for a while.

I haven't bothered to try this yet, since i didn't find the site until a day or so ago. I don't see much point since my character gets wiped in about a week. Anyone know if this works well?

Well it doesn't work because I don't seem to guard if I disengage.

What I try to do is just take off my weapons, but the problem is Mnks don't rely on weapons that much in the begining hehe. +4 helps for damage, but won't help that much.

indeed. 2 years old and before there was a north american retail verison of ffxi or any reason to have a english translated version of the site. Note that it was when the level cap was 60 or 65, can't remember which too, so the formula isn't correct >.>;

Why you so worried how old a thread is? Did you even try to train your guardskills at all? If there was a new chart updated would you even try it? Hmmm. C'mon I am getting flamed here by 2 lv75 mnks who obviously dont train their guard, and are more concerned about how old a thread is than give us answers to skilling guard up. Jeez, why do you guys think you know everything? you sure dont have a better of doing it .

What do I know you say hes only lv69 mnk, we lv75 mnks we know better cause we so hi, please. Well in this case lets see:
1. When you guys were at lv68-70, were your guards ever at 156 base? if no which I am sure they never were (probably at 98-106), mine is so yes I do know a thing or 2 about it.
So maybe you want reprint or revised thread, saying basically the same thing but not in same wordings eh.
There are 2 more charts for guard skillups I have found, but like you "uber know it all mnks" say its 2years old so its useless. Its not accurate but, its a good basic chart not 100% but atleast 70% ok.
So like I said if u did not actually spend time trying to trian guard dont tell others, blah blah blah this and that; simple state you dont know.
We are all mnks here so be nice and stop knocking others who try to help others, since you obviously cant

Its the same old play, if some 1 says we know nothing on the matter lets attack his response or reply , better yet start insulting them. Its old and does not help those who really want them ?'s answered. So dont take it as an insult please, cause its not meant as 1.

I actually never got past lv.46 MNK. There is no elitism involved in either of the posts that you are responding to at the moment. The point is that you tried to act like you were imparting some wisdom by correcting a link that is 2 years old (and the link isn't actually wrong anyway). You didn't tell anyone how to level guard skill. You didn't even have the word "Guard" in your post. You didn't 'help' anyone in any way.

Where exactly do you think I 'insulted' you anyway? Now, if you wish to carry on an intelligent discourse, cut the attitude and share your wisdom. I'm sure you have a better way to train guard than what I said. It shouldn't be too hard since the thread already states that the information was wrong.

Sorry bout the attitude Mithrael, it was not meant for u either. There is a certain lv75 mnk going to every thread bout guard skill flaming me, just a matter of time before he hits this 1.
But the thread thing was But not an insult either.
I have found it easier to train guard at 67-69, hopefully your guard is at 98+ at that time. When rdy hit crawlers nest, this what I have on:
Head-af crown
neck-guarding torque
body-af body
back-cavaliers mantle (+1 too pricey)
pants-af pants
legs-stumbling sandals
waist-brown belt (muscle belt ok but slow, will use at lv71 instead)
rings-2 suns
Using feral fangs, sometimes fight bare fisted if I tend to kill them to fast.
Buy 35 pamama au lait, seafood stew (last 3hrs-boosts def n vit) and thats it.
guardskill:
98-120=death jacket, worker crawler and maze lizards.
114-138=killer mushrooms, doom scorpions and nest beetle.
114-150=soldier crawler, labyrinth lizrd and soul stinger.
126-156=exoray, blazer beetles(130), mushussu(139), rumble crawler(150) and witch hazel.
135-173=elementals (dont try before 155, they are tough n drain your hp quick).
Wont try wespes till I get lv70 and start using tiger mask (vit+, hp+ and another final mnk max hp boost), gonna be fun.
Hope this helps its what I am doing and it works, gets boring alot but hey its for a good cause you.

Well even though this thread is 2 years old might as well put an idea on how to raise guard since it showed up (In case someone searches).

Raising the skill is still accurate though, you raise the skill buy having a monster that is around what level you'd of been that you could of first reached it. And let that monster try to do it's best to damage you, the problems you'll have is your evasion may kick in before guarding does. You can counter that by wearing as much -evasion you can get, same thing you can do with parry.

Also to help guard in skill equipping more AGI/DEX will help.

Along the lines of raising any skill a recent theory I've heard is that also equipping -<skill being trained> can help you increase it faster as well.

I am not too sure about the last statement. If you were trying to lvl up a weapon (such as G.Sword or something), you would want it to hit the monster more often in order to actualy get a skill up (if you miss you get nothing). The same with Guard. You want it to happen more often.

Since guard only happens *after* evasion fails, you want evasion to fail more often. So -evasion. If evasion is AGI dependent, then -AGI. The more often it happens, the better, therefore +counter gear.


BTW:
How about training in PvP battle? Would that work? People keep on fighting each other lvling their skills...?

Well this is what I used and it works, and it does not apply to weapons skill only guard (parry too, but i can only speak for guard since I'm a mnk). Cross counters n gigas line bracelets would be nice too, but I dont have it.
Wont say much cause I have already answered, just try it (hey if it dont work fine).
