Question about taking a subjob.

Alright, I'm currently level 16 going on 17 so I am about to start collecting the items for a subjob. I am pretty sure that I am taking the warrior, but what I am curious about is whether or not I still use hand-to-hand weapons or switch to swords or whatever the warrior job uses. Also, when you switch do you still gain experience in levels in your main job, or do you gain for both your main and sub job?
