Sounds like you were just fighting relatively weak mobs. PTs like that have a propensity to have their DD tank, especially if they're geared and playing well. The ol' meat and potatoes setup of two melees and a tank against an IT mob with an SC+MB usually has you doing less damage and getting less hate.

By your level I imagine you're fighting mandragoras or maybe makara. Mandies in particular are just defensively weak. For that matter, they also hit like school girls so it isn't a big deal to take hate on them.

Just a couple quick adds.

If you are concerned about hate at the open of the fight then you may want to toss a High Jump in pretty early. That should help the tank build up hate.

As far as armor, I used the MC Doublet at 30. The +1 to Str and Dex is nice to have and it's pretty cheap the last I checked. It holds up pretty well til you have to start wearing the checkerboard.
