  • Oni's guide to newbie DRGs.

Alright, so I see alot of questions on the forums that aren't answered in most guides, so I decided to take the time to writing a newbie guide to the Dragoon! So lets get started.
Note: this guide is assuming you know the basic, basic stuff about a DRG, like what weapons he uses and what each skill does.
Note 2: This will not explain skills, and AF armour, and whatnot. Only questions people are asking about the DRG class in general.

    First things first

A Dragoon is a master of dragons and spears. Dragoons train in the art of jumping as high as mountains to pierce the hide of dragons. Thats the dragoon lore really.
blah blah blah, use spears, etc etc we all know that.

    Moving on

Right, so, whats a Dragoon good for? Damage. "But Oni! DRKs do damage!!@#@111oneone"
Okay kids, really, it all comes down to which one you like more.
Remember, a good DRG will ALWAYS outdamage a DRK, and a good DRK will ALWAYS outdamage a DRG.
By this I mean, a DRK who can't play and thinks he can tank will DIE. Same for a DRG. a DRK who can't hold back and manage hate will DIE, same for a DRG. so you see how it works.

BUT, if you want to go deeper, lets go deeper.

    The facts

Dragoons hit HARD, and FAST. This is because of Pentathrust. Pentathrust gives back a whopping 60% TP per use! Thats.. assuming you hit all 5 times. It may not hit as hard as Guillotine, but you can use it again faster.

Dark Knights hit HARDER and SLOWER. This is because of the bigger delay for Scythes and the TP Guillotine gives you.

In the end, it depends if you want to spend like 10 minutes charging one Guillotine, and doing double digit numbers, go DRK. if you want to do damage and do it fast, go DRG. but you'll only get triple digit. I know I'm making it seem like DRK are worse, but I dont mean too
What I mean to say is, if you like pulling off those HUGGEEE numbers that people go WOAAAH too, DRK is probably your ideal choice. But if you like pulling off not so huge numbers, but seeing them every 30 seconds, thats DRG for you.

THE DRAGOON DOES NOT TANK FOR GOD SAKES PEOPLE JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE PROVOKE DOES NOT MEAN WE CAN TANK!!$!@$@@!!1111oneone

    Races:

Belive me people, in the end, it does not matter what race.
    Gear>race.
Meaning, your gear will always mean more than your race.
I say choose your race depending on what you like.
BUT, people INSIST on a comparison. so heres a basic one.
    Hume: Good Dex, Good STR.
Elvaan: REALLY good STR, not so good Dex.
Mithra: not so good STR, REALLY good Dex.
Galka: Don't know much about galka DRGs, but I know the STR isn't bad.
Taru: Not really good STR, not really good DEX. but don't let this discourage you, like I said, gear>race. :D

    Gear, subjob, and wyvern questions

Gear is pretty standard. Dragoon use medium and light armour. so you're not gonna see chainmail on a dragoon.
Then you have your lance, which is really powerful, and I highly suggest a Lance-type polearm over a Spear-type polearm.
But you don't get your first lance until 34.

    Subjob:

Okay, I'm gonna be honost with you people. Even though you COULD, it would be awfully stupid to sub something like BST or NIN to DRG. Sorry guys, but its the truth.
Your double sword weilding DRG will NOT work. Not saying you shouldn't, but you're gonna be useless in a party.
    Although these subjobs do work:

    THEIF:

Sneak attack and Dex boost. Although subbed sneak is only double your damage, its always good to have an extra crit every minute or so. Plus the dex boost will help your accuracy
Plus you get stuff like treasure hunter, gilfinder, etc.
I use a 15 thf sub for farming and when I go and hunt for items.

    WARRIOR:

Wow, STR boost, atk up at 30, berserk, double attack, warcry, and an emergency provoke. Not bad, not bad at all... wanna hit hard? go war.

    SAMURAI:

Some people say this works, some people say it doesn't.
At level 60, you could sub a 30 SAM and get Meditate.
You use Pentathrust, get 60 TP back, use meditate, get 100 tp, use Pentathrust again, do a skillchain with yourself, then "jump away the hate with Super Jump. Too bad if you're in a EXP party, this wont be very useful. whats the point of killing a monster faster every 5 minutes. You'll be pulling every minute or so, it wont give you time to recharge. Although, I could be wrong though, this is useful for boss fights/nm/hnms/whatever because of the high damage and the monster lasts for a long time.

    MAGES:

Theres a really interesting DRG/RDM guide on these forums that shows the more, "stratigical" side to a Dragoon. Its worth checking out, and a Red Mage seems like a good sub.
Now as for WHM and BLM, its good for soloing at the start, but in later levels healing breath caps and doesn't work very well. Plus you don't get the str boost you need as a damage dealer.

    PALADIN:

Simple, your MP will suck, and you will have no need for all that defence. Random breath attacks, but crappy sub.

    DARK KNIGHT:

You first 2 ATK Up traits don't stack, kinda useless. You'll have a nice STR bonus, and Soul Eater and Last resort, but personally I rather have Double Attack and Berserk, because you already have enough hate as it is x.x
As much as you think this owns on paper,
DRG/DRK WILL GET YOU KILLED BEFORE YOU CAN DO ANY DAMAGE!!
    Random breath attacks.

    NIN, BST, RNG, BRD, OTHER:

I HIGHLY don't recommend these as they will not help you in any way really. And it WILL make you wait hours for parties. What would you rather have, a DRG/NIN or a DRG/WAR?
But if you really want too, then go ahead..

    Wyvern:

Your Wyvern is very helpful, it does quite a bit of damage on its own so its very useful. Too bad its HP is quite low, and until you get the AF piece with the Regen effect, (sorry, forgot which one x.x) the only way to heal your Wyvern is to heal yourself, which drains tp. Drained TP=mad PT.
So you gotta be smart, know when to let your Wyvern out because AoE skills like Bomb Toss REALLY hurt it. So if you're fighting gobs, its best not to let him out unless you really want too.
Your Wyvern does not grow, or change shape, colour, or whatever at all. Sucks, I know, but what can we do.
Your Wyvern uses random elemental breath attacks to either do damage or heal you depending on yourself or other PT members when you do a weapon skill.
In later levels, it seems that the breath attacks are more useful than the healing, because the healing is capped. although some people prefer to keep a mage as their sub.
OR, you can have a DRK or a PLD sub, and have BOTH breaths. Sounds good? Too bad PLD and DRK aren't that great as a subjob. So yeah, you're sacrificing alot.

    Other garbage
DRG is a great class, enjoy it.
I just posted this cause so many people are always asking about DRGs and whatnot, so I decided to make a guide.
a sticky would be awesome, cause it did take me time to make this.
thanks for all the info and questions answered guys, it really helped, and now I'm hopeing I can help others too.
I'll try and update this guide as much as I can or see needed.
PM me questions, comments, conserns, corrections, ideas, anything you want added, or whatever!

    Take care,

I made this a seperate post so it stands out and everyone sees it.

EVERYTHING I SAY IN THERE IS BASED ON ALOT OF OPINION, AND IN GAME FACTS. I DO NOT MEAN TO SAY DRGS ARE THE BEST CLASS, AND THAT DRKS SUCK OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
THIS IS A DRG GUIDE, NOT A DRK GUIDE, THAT IS WHY I'M GOING INTO SUCH DEEP EXPLINATION WHEN IT COMES TO DRG, BUT NOT TO DRK. DRK IS AN AMAZING CLASS AND I EVEN CONSIDERED PLAYING IT BEFORE. I DON'T MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE AT ALL.

and also, try not to flame me, pretty please, I tried hard x.x
if you see something wrong, tell me and I'll correct it, but I dont wanna see OMFG U TEH SUX)R DRAGOONS ARE LEIK THIS NOTLIK THAT THIS IS WHAT YOU DO AND YOU GOT THIS WRONG WTF.

    just a little disclaimer

I keep hearing dragoon can't tank blah blah blah... I spent 2 hours as the only level 38-42 (lv40 at the time) on seek... a group asked me if I'd be willing to tank beetles/soldiers crawlers and I said sure since I had nothing better to do since it wasn't full moon. When I joined I had 4k xp to next level, when I left I was level 42 (11k xp total gained), I only died once and that was because someone pulled a Doom Scorpion and I got limited for 425. I'm much happier with the 11000 experience points I gained rather than the 0 I would have got otherwise.

Sure if I had the choice between a party that makes me tank and a party that doesn't I'll pick the party that doesn't so I can use berserk, but there's no use missing out on good experience.

Party was DRK, DRG, DRG, RDM, WHM, WHM for the most part... then after a while it was DRG, DRG, DRK, RDM WHM BLM and after that it was DRG, DRG, DRK, RDM, RDM, BLM.

P.S. The only thing I won't tolerate is someone bitching at me for having +stats armor rather than +def armor. Saying "You play your class, I'll play mine" to a RDM was a major factor in me being under 425HP when that Scorpion killed me

Edit: Also I wanted to say that other than this mentioned above you have an awesome guide.
