subbing WAR all the way doable?

hey hey! i haven't been a DRK for long (only lvl 22), it's my first adv job and I'm now planning on taking it all the way. Recently though, i've been reading up alot about DRK's. Some good and not so good stuff about the job, but I've made a commitment and sticking with it.

Only problem.... I have no desire at this time to level thf. Main reason is I don't want my static partner (pld/war) to wait up for me to catch up. I'd tell him to just go ahead without me but he insists he won't get into a exp pt without me.

So my question is, can I take DRK all the way subbing WAR? Getting a pt isn't the problem, we usually tend to form our own. But it's the hate part that scares me.

Anyone done this before that can give me some pointers? Can't I always cancel my attack buffs and use defender if I get too much of the mobs attention?

Could do this:

Level MNK to 18. Both of you.
Level WAR to 37. Both of you.
Level PLD/DRK to 60. Friend/You.
Level NIN/THF to 37. Friend/You
Level PLD/DRK to 75. Both of you

You will need THF as a subjob, and he will need NIN as a subjob later on, and the jobs both complement each other very well. The only snag I see is you needing to level NIN as a sub to THF, i'd recommend you have him level a job that can tank well, like DRG or SAM with you. You'll only have to get to 18 on NIN if you only want to take THF to 37, so if he's on DRG or SAM he could tank with/for you, so that you don't have to tank with your measly three shadows (make PTs together, of course. Anything else and you WILL be asked to tank, and NOBODY will know how to voke off you correctly)

yes, you can take /war all the way.

thf is nice to have for a drk so you can drop some really big numbers like with sata-spinslash but with a pld as your tank, i'm not sure how many ppl would like having a 1400dmg spinslash be put on anyone else other than the tank.

personally, i think /thf limits a drk's potential in XP pts.

the pld will not need /nin until he does some end game activities.

THF is great to have for endgame and in non-burn parties where you want to plant a crapload of dmg on the mob and give all that hate to the tank.


SATA Spinning Slash is just that good. This'll only really apply from levels 66 - 72 for most DRKs though, and seeing as you want to sub WAR, I guess that means you too.


All else aside, having THF sub wish great for farming. Treasure Hunter and Flee are fun, + the evasion bonuses stacked with the new signet bonuses make farming a breeze.

thanks Omni, that gives me a good boost of confidence with my job combo. Guess I'll take it as far as I can and update you guys on how well it is.

I do plan to level THF up someday, and I'm sure it probably is the best choice for DRK 60+, but I've seen some crazier combos make it far. Whether they were any good is left up for debate... never partied with them. So going with the second best sub can't be so bad.

You can do it. Then again its nice to have a few different subjobs to choose from. to help with the config of your party. But this isnt a concern til 60, thats when i needed to lvl my sam an thf. Also its best if you keep both gsword an scythe lvled up. or close to cap. that way you have more skill chain options, An avoid the pain of tryin got cap it later on..

Don't forget to have /SAM ready too. @75 You'll be getting +5 STR, +10 Accuracy and +10 Haste from Hasso. You'll also have Seigan to fall back on if sh** hits the fan. From what I've heard though /WAR still out parses it (and /THF 72+) and both those JA's increase your spell recasts by 50%, so you have to watch yourself.

yea, followed up on your advice about /SAM and it sounds like it'll benefit me aswell. So i plan to level THF and SAM for the endgame stuff.

I'm gonna try to see if I can take DRK all the way to 75 with /WAR though. If i fail miserably, I'll let it be known.
