first i wana say i am sorry for making 2 gswd threads but i am just unsure atm about a lot of things.

First off, i got spinning slash and used it on crawlers in the tree at 66 and i have to say, this is a major let down. IDK why i have been told that this is the end all be all of WS because ij ust dont get it. IMO Cross Reaper is the most under rated WS ive seen. Ive been told over and over and over about how i need spin slash and its not stronger then CR? on top of that you dont even exp off bone based mobs until 73? lol i need some education on this.

Question is even though i am not exactly over joyed with spin slash should i mainly concentrate on just my gswd and lvl my scythe later on in skill ups (talkin at 75)? I am lookin to take a break from the skill up scene and i just wana play so the question is can great sword get me to 75 w/o using scythe?

Thanks a lot for the advice once again.

Yes, you need to keep both skilled up. Most of the DRKs I know have told me that I don't need to get Spinning Slash at 66. They said they didn't use it until 69/70. If you already have Spinning Slash, it would be easier to keep them both capped, than trying to recap one when you need to use it.

You do not use Gsword on Procesionaires.

Procesionaires = Scythe for Cross Reaper and Darkness.

Spinslash is a MUCH better WS after Procs/Flies in Boyahda because almost everything after that is weak to Light. Also the fact that Cross is a 2 hit WS means you can still miss the 2nd swing. Spinslash is 1 Hit and combined with Sneak Attack (from behind) is always a garunteed hit that deals excelent damage.

You could also be comparing damage with Darksteel scythe at 65, and to be honest Scythe hit for hit is better than Gsword. Also because of the fact that you got a new scythe upgrade. Once you get to lvl 70-73 ish and have the option of Balmung/Balins/Nagan you will see a difference. Death Scythe upgrade will once again be better hit damage than Gsword although at that lvl Spinslash is much better than Cross Reaper.

well i have a heart so i am upgraded. crawlers are weak to darkness and ice but flys are only weak to ice.... so i could easily do a distortion chain with gswd.

Spinning Slash > Gekko or > Full Break > or even cross reaper

it just seems pointless to continue to upkeep my scythe when i am doing flys until 69-70 and fact that flys are weak to ice and fact that you just cant cap both weapons during exp grinds, "hey guys i am going to switch to my sctyhe now so i need to change the SC?" watch how many ppl leave lol.

Bottom line is i like scythe but if gswd is the best at 70 why even continue to skill the scythe with that i said above?

because yer goign to be kickign yerself in the ass later on or maybe 10 minutes from now when u realize u need it for something, or a situation arises where you do. Parties also favour Drk who have both capped up and an update weapon of each for versitility.

Simply put, a DRK needs Greatsword for Light renkei, and a Scythe for Darkness. Saying one is better than the other is kind of a moot point, because *having* both available makes you, as a DRK, more desireable than alot of the other DPS jobs. This versatility makes us more marketable.

mid 60's I found myself doing whatever my pt told me to and not complaining. Did Darkness and Light a lot, crawlers resist both of em kinda equal so meh. Ironshells I used Greatsword for light, and I'll tell you, those things are really weak to it. My highest amount of dmg on Spinning Slash (1400+1400) was on those crabs. Then I moved on up to Darters, snagged a MNK did Dragon Kick>Cross Reaper. This may be Distortion but it rips them to pieces! I could easly pull off 900+500 Cross Reapers on those things, super easy exp. Around lvl 70 started going to Dragon's Aery, those things resist about everything you throw at em, just do whatever :| 71 I have been to every exp zone almost expect sky for the rang of 70-75. Light trashes the following mobs you exp off of:

              Weapons
              Bones
              Ghost
              Golems
              Dolls
              Tigers
              Cockatrices

Hell, just today I was in KRT completely, trashing undead mobs...got at least 10 2500+ dmg Spinning Slashes (one was like...1050+1550) now I'm @500 for some odd reason and I can't wait to hit 72, 71 is a sucky lvl D:/

SPinning Slash avarages around 700-900 dmg, and can do some pretty nasty 1k+ things. You'll learn to love it soon :D

The reason why Darkness is better than Distortion is because Distortion bonus will not be as much as Darkness Bonus.

You can do 1000 dmg Crossreaper and get about 500-600 Distortion if lucky. I've never seen it possible to get a full 100% Distortion (ie. 1000+1000). However with lvl 3 renkei's it is possible.

                Flies from 69-70?

Goto Den of Rancor, Tormentors are fun; Spinslash + Light rips these to pieces too, or maybe bones in Gustav.

The reason you lvl scythe is because it still gives you Darkness. The higher skill lvl in scythe also lets you able to hit more and deal more damage to say some HNM that are hard to hit.

Light is good on Golems in sky aswell, although if you ever try pots, you don't really ever have to be part of the renkei. 900 dmg Spinslash but still getting about 100-200 Light is a waste. Just Spamming WS is good enough on pots.

sounds interesting, i capped out both my weps 2nite was kinda easy. I guess i'm just really tired of having to build skill ups. i am the guy as most good drks that build there pts and skill up stuff is kinda killing me.

Also guess another question later on, whats best for gods and hnms? sword or scythe? should a high end drk put his MP into scythe or sword? idk to many questions not enough answers :/

p.s. what exactly is sky? lol

                    1. I think it would depend on what you're fighting. Like adamantoise, and the lesser HNMs you could probably just screw around and do whatever. Much like the DRK/NIN who tanked Adamantoise with a Kraken

                    2. Considering DRKs are useful for Light and Dark it would probably be wise to raise Gswd to compensate for the lower cap on Gswd skill.

                    3. Sky is the Tu'lia region with the popped gods like Suzaku and Genbu. I believe they also have other NMs there. Its called Sky because its a flying city.

since a drk has A+ in scythe, wouldnt it be best to make what is already a strength even stronger? i just dont get it, why have scythe be a useless weapon? why not put all ur mp into scythe.... wouldnt the damage be greater then gswd? idk just curious, think my question is not about drk/nin but question is more geared towards a serious high end drk.

This goes back to what i see so much off, drk is a physical damage dealer in more ways then most see but for some reason ppl play around with axes and ninja subs.... i dont get it.

Keep both skilled. Like many others in this thread said: different mobs have different weaknesses.

Plus, spinning slash is THAT much sexier

Darters 67-69, Distortion wrecks them. They resist both Light and Darkness down to 100-200 bonuses, but Distortion will be doing 400+ almost every time, these things are the exeption to lvl 3 skillchains. It's not bad exp either, me and a PLD friend did it all 67-69 and got constant 4-5k an hour...which is nothing to complain about.
