Re: The Scythe, the greatsword, and....the great axe?

Great Axe is handy in the pre-50ish levels. Shield Break gives Evasion-40, which is more than enough to make up for any skill gaps (hell, it's a good enough reason in itself to use Great Axe.) At level 30 Axe Belt becomes available (+5 Great Axe skill if you're subbing WAR) which closes the gap for quite a while. Sturmwind will outdamage just about any WS Great Sword and Scythe have to offer, and can be used to close Fragmentation (Breaks can close Fusion.)

It seems to me that the most useful third weapon for DRK would be sword, for Spirits Within. You may like it or hate it, but against some targets it is significantly more effective than normal WS.

Of course if you sub NIN for skillup, you can skillup axe and sword at the same time.

No doubt about it, though, great axe is an awesome weapon at lower levels (and the skill cap difference isn't much of an issue until after 60). I haven't seen it used much at high levels - WAR are rare (and often subbing NIN for one reason or another) and the DRK seem put off by the WS limitations, skill cap gap or the tedium of skilling up yet another 2h weapon. But if you don't mind those things, by all means, give it a try and see how the damage, WS damage and TP gain compares to your other weapons. You can theorize until you're blue in the face but the best test of a weapon's effectiveness is in battle.

Another weapon that can be dangerous in certain situations is Axe. A 300 TP Berserked, Blood Weapon'd, Souleater'd, Last Resort'd Rampage can be ridiculously devastating. ;3

not only was Awntawn's response a little over a year ago, Decimation has some pretty slick modifiers @300%. So if you're gonna use any weapong other than scythe/greatsword, may as well be a 1hander with some SA-ability.

endgame drk can be a great skillup job for weapons same as warrior. I would consider it ideal to cap sycth, GS, and axe (drk/nin can be pretty impressive), then GA.

              Dead topic brought to life.

Rampage is worth the trouble, not Decimation. Multihit + Souleater is pretty much the one trick pony for DRKs nowadays. Guillotine, Rampage, Vorpal Blade... of course, Gswords buck the trend here.

Of course, this is all moot now that there's other things to factor in, like the new JA/JT and Abs-TP.

mainly i'm compared Byakkos axe to scythe....the axe has -3 dmg BUT -24 delay! So does the the less delay make up for the -3 dmg and make Byakko's axe the better weapon?

should i skill up my G-axe now? O_O
                That's where you're wrong.

Use a Tredecim Scythe, and an Algol or Subduer. Tredecim has a hidden effect of making every 13th hit a forced critical (~7% increase), and Subduer is a flat 6% increase. Algol, well, that's pretty obvious.
