  • Question about the Peacock Charm.

    Question for all,

I play a Mithran Dark Knight, my accuracy is a bit better then most races. This fact is important for the total point of the question I have coming. It gives me a bit of leeway when it comes to Gear purchase.

I have a very severe tendency to keep my gear at the top of the line level, taking if need be, weeks at a time of farming to get the gear I feel I need, then start leveling again.

At level 33, I could have obtained the Peacock Charm, but seeing as it is currently selling for 4 million Gil in the auction house, one can understand just why I passed it up.

Recently I got ahold of my friend in my linkshell, who hunts NM all days and night. This is what he does. He stopped levelling because he likes the challenge of hunting NM.

When I questioned him about the Peacock Charm and what dropped it, he told me it was impossible to get it, and that I was better off farming for gil to obtain it.

When I pressed him as to why Argus, the NM that drops it is impossible to obtain it from, he gave me the following reasons.

Provoke Bots, he said, was the #1 reason. He had hunted Argus for some time, along with other NM and knows the situations, and what he states, is the ugliest side of the game that is FFXI. Apparently these bots just camp this spot and as soon as Argus spawns, they provoke it and attack. I am assuming through some sort of Macro that a Third Party program uses.

I asked him for how he had proof of this, knowing the latency issues of the servers being in Japan, and mobs popping on US side to us, already purple because someone provoked it before it even appears on our screen. (( I have seen this myself. The latency issue does exist. ))

His statement was that a while back, he had seen others drag mobs to the provoke bots waiting, disengage the mob right near them, then watch the bots provoke immeaditley once the mob was open to attack again. Now, if it was a Normal human being behind the controls, they would not provoke a worthless mob, especially when it can lose them the prize that Argus Drops while they are engaged with something that is not their goal.

Talking with him further, he stated that one said person nearly got banned over this, because they were breaking the Code of conduct by dragging mobs to the bots. When I questioned him as to why provoke bots were allowed, yet other third party programs were not, he merely shrugged and stated he did not know why. Just that nothing seems to be done about the provoke bots.

As for the person who was dragging the mobs to the bots, and disengaging them, well, he was threatened with being banned. Come to find out, due to such, he quit the game.

The other reason was also due to Latency issue, he stated, which I believe him on. I have seen others grab NM or other mobs in front of me before they even pop on my screen. And trust me, I have a VERY good gaming Rig. Top of the line with a High speed Cable Modem. So I do not doubt the latency issue one bit.

As for the provoke bots, I am very inclined to believe him, as he honestly has no reason to lie to me or anyone else about this matter. This is someone I trust on such matters, and while I may find it somewhat disbelievable, I do not find it exactly improbable. I honestly believe he is telling me the truth about the bots. He has nabbed enough NM from others, has done it quite well and hunts them on a regular basis, but as he has told me, it is quite definitley the ugliest part of the game. And I believe him.

So, with those odds against me, of getting the peacock charm, and what I honestly believe to be the issue of what would be literally MONTHS of farming for gil to just obtain it, here is my honest question.

For a Mithran Dark Knight, is it EVEN WORTH the effort? I mean, I have two sniper rings that give me the benefit quite nicely, do I really need the peacock charm on top of all of this? Or can I just simply ignore it?

Will my accuracy suffer so greatley without it? Or, in all honesty, can I live without this item?

The reason why I am honestly asking this, is because I am quite well prepared to spend the months nessecary farming anything and everything to get the gil to obtain it.

    HOWEVER.

I would much rather continue levelling, and keep progressing through the game if I can. If I absolutley do not need this item, then I will go on without it. I really, REALLY don't want to spend months and months of farming items to obtain gil to buy this, when I could otherwise be gaining levels and helping out my linkshell on Genkai and BCNM and Adv job quests etc.

So is it worth it? Or should I continue levelling? Do I absolutley need this item? Or can I forget about it completley and just move on?

Please let me know, I am asking the higher level Dark Knight's here on their opinion, as in the upper ranges I have heard and been told Accuracy caps period at a certain point.

    Your help is really appreciated.

And please, no flames about the NM hunting issue, I just want my question answered about whether or not I need the Peacock Charm, or if I can live without it as a Dark Knight.

    My Eternal Thanks,

    Draconis

That is totally wrong, you get no leeway what-so-ever.

Yes about the bats, i think he talking about a auto-fire controller. The bats pop in the room where argus does so it hard to see whats gunna pop. Also Argus pops or LK pops wich is the most annoying part of it and its a 24-30ish hr pop. He is not a fun NM to camp ive done it and its totally not worth it. Peacock is ok but i like having royal guard for the att+ but hell if i could get the peacock ya i would use that over royal guard. Its not 100% needed and if you do actually get it i would sell it and buy haubergeon at 59.

seems like the script has advanced, now the bots on ragnarok ignore the bats that pop near argus.. this is probably to avoid people dragging mobs in there to make them provoke everything and die, too.. i hope these asses get banned, spoils the game >_<
and i hope the 500000 fishbots get banned as well, i wonder if ANYONE has gained their lu shang through honest fishing.. :/

        Heh,

I said a BIT better, I didn't say it made a Godsend of difference in comparison lol.

But yeah, it has me concerned. I want the item...but....with all the trouble of attempting to get it.........

        I dunno.....

So any and everyone's thoughts on the matters, I would greatley appreciate it.

        Thanks.

            Mak is right... It's not a bot, it's called a turbo-controller

And about your Mithra accuracy crusade, I beg to differ. A few extra DEX isn't going to put you ahead of the pack that much ^_^.

go with the royal guards collar

You are a mithra, got lower strength and attack, just more reason why you should get the royal guards collar.

Peacock charm isn't really worth the effort. I have tried it, but I believe the provoke bot bit. There is always the same 2-3 characters camping it 24/7 on cerebrus. I believe normal human being needs sleep, be they english or japanese....

But if by some act of God, you got it, I recommend selling it and get things like the Hauberk, which adds soooooooooooooo much more than just +10 Acc.

Thing about camping on FFXI makes me miss Everquest a lot... back then, the majority of people would ask if you were camping something (the equiv of an NM, or just the area for exp) and would find somewhere else to go, or ask you to let them know when you're done... in FFXI the vast majority will steal a mob you've camped for hours on end right from under your nose when they've only just arrived... I hear people complaining about it every day, which is the main reason I'm not an avid NM camper.

As for the charm, I agree with those saying Royal Guard Collar will do you better.

In Everquest people would pass on 215 hours worth of gil-farming (at 20k/hr to earn 4.3M gil) just because someone else was there first? I find that rather hard to swallow...

Then again, perhaps in everquest there weren't monsters that could potentially take 72 hours to spawn (24 hours +12 for the leech king to spawn, then 24 hours + 12 for argus).

EQ just had a different community approach to the NM concept. It was a first come, first serve baisis. People left you alone and respected your camp, as you had most likely been there hours already. It was the general community agreement that, if you were there for hours apon hours camping something, you wouldnt want someone else to move in and ruin your time camping. Moving in on someones camp/kill stealing was VERY looked down apon in EQ. You could work yourself up a bad reputation in no time doing that.

Of course, there was no possible way for the "first to agro gets it" situation in EQ. The kill went to what ever group/person did the most damage to the mob, and any number of people could attack it at once.

and yeah, there are mobs in EQ that took 72+ hours to spawn. There is competition with those, but its more like the HMN system in FFXI. Whoever attacks first, the other guild would wait, and if the first would fail, they would move in.

                      never played EQ

but that community sounds much more mature. I would much more prefer that type of system but I doubt the current sytem would change. I guess it's not too suprising when a game is only available to PC user (hence older people over all) vs console players (younger audience).

This is the first MMORPG I played, and I have definitly seem quite a bit of immaturity among the playing community, and can only imaging what it would be like when PS2 version hits the US shores.

and i wish the FFXI community was alot like of that of the EQ

Yea that is the only thing I miss about EQ is generally more mature players (still assholes, but what can you do). Also platinum (currency in EQ) mattered a lot less than in this game, so it isn't really a valid comparison. Basically in EQ if you wanted something from some monster you couldn't solo you got people to come help you kill it. That is another annoying thing in this game. No one does anything to help anyone get an item, its always "but what do I get out of it", so 99% of the time the item is simply sold and split 6 ways instead of anyone actually using it to improve their character. Guess it also has to do with the frequency of rare spawns which needless to say were far more predictable in EQ, and had much more reliable drop rates too, but that also lead to severe inflation as well, so rare items seldom kept any value.

its damned annoying, the NM ahhh, 0/1 with that thing and i will never try again. i'd only attempt it if i had 2 characters playing at the same time so one could camp LK while other camps Argus. its valueable, it has never devalued on my server, it only gets more and more expensive, it was only 2million a year ago and now its up to 5million, for that reason alone I'd never sell it.

                              Quick question...
I'm still a noob DRK (lvl 18), but i really don't understand why peacock charm sells for so much. It's +10 range acc. and +10 regular acc, right? So if you're DRK, the +10 range acc. is basically useless since you really only use crossbow to pull, and then it doesn't matter if you hit or not.

So basically, we're looking at the +10 regular acc., right? I heard that 3 acc. = 1 DEX, so +10 acc, would just be a bit more than 3 DEX, right? There are a lot of items that give you that much for a lot less (I'm wearing 2 balance rings right now for +2 DEX each), so what's the big deal?
