Let me say first I don't and haven't PvP, so you'll have to ask someone else about that.

                    want a all around character

                    hows that set up
What /thf brings to the table:
                    LV DNC/THF
10 Steal (Job Ability) - Useful for farming, but doesn't add to survivability
10 Gilfinder (Job Trait) - farming
20 Evasion Bonus (JT) - useful, but you already receive this trait as DNC15 (identical traits don't stack)
30 Sneak Attack (JA) - Guarantees the next attack crits if you're behind the mob; might be useful if you're having an awful time landing a step or a first hit while soloing.
30 Treasure Hunter (JT) - farming
40 Resist Gravity (JT) - I can count the number of commonly fought, gravity-wielding mobs on one hand.
50 Flee (JA) - good for running away to a zone if you're soloing; most parties, though look dimly on members running off.
60 Trick Attack (JA) - shifts hate. Useless for solo, and very iffy in a party.
60 Evasion Bonus II (JT) - nice, but you already got this at DNC45.
                    70 Mug (JA) - farming

/THF will also add maybe 2 Dex and/or Agi by 75 compared to some subs, but that's not enough to really justify it. Especially since /NIN will have similar stats. (I'm being lazy and not logging in to check them ;; .)

If I were inviting a DNC to a party and saw they were /THF, I would ask them to change to a different subjob, having played DNC in a party.

Soloing, if you're blitzing through EPs, then /THF should be okay. If you're wanting to go against DC+ or EM-VT, you're going to want one of the other common subjobs. If you can make it work for you, however, then the more power to you.

It's kinda irrelevant that both jobs can wear similar gear, since only the main job affects the gear you can wear. And unfortunately, DNC doesn't get a lot of the good gear for THF.

                    tl,dr:
                    DNC/THF farming: good
                    DNC/THF party: outshined by DNC/MNK, DNC/WAR, DNC/NIN, and/or DNC/SAM (level-range dependent)
DNC/THF solo: your mileage will vary
                    DNC/THF pvp: {I'm sorry.} {I don't understand the question.} ^^
                    WHM75-SCH75-DNC75-THF75
                    To do: Sandy 7-1, ToAU 42, WoG15

                          Solo as DNC/THF?

Ferwut? You cant really SATA like that... (WELL YOU CAN, I know, but its hard (I KNOW ITS NOT HARD FOR SOME OF YOU, but it is for me! Shut up! lol))

And the evasion is kinda meh when you sub THF, and probably not even noticeable since DNC has goodish evasion already.

                            Re: Dancer/Thief

I feel like I'm being summoned.

THF and DNC do share a lot of gear, but this doesn't mean they pair up best together.

DNC's most ideal subjobs are actually MNK, NIN and SAM. With a little RNG for accuracy issues in the 20s if you wish.

THF just doesn't bring a lot to combat side of the job outside of sneak attack. Most of it is just tools for farming after you have Sneak Attack and Trick Attack.

MNK is great for the early levels 1-20, particularly for the Martial Arts trait which lets you speed up punches, solo effectively and helps you keep in contact with the mobs for Drain Samba.

Most people use /NIN for the Dual Wield Trait and Utsusemi from 24 onward. DW admittedly helps bring a little more accuracy and attack if you equip the proper daggers. I subbed /RNG because you'll actually get more from the first Accuracy bonus trait than you would two daggers, so /RNG plus one of those daggers worked actually worked out better, but once DNC gets the Accuracy Bonus trait at 30, I went over to /NIN.

/SAM is a 60+ subjob. Its mostly for the Store TP traits and Meditate, as well as third eye. A DNC/SAM would end up having more TP to conjure up in the event of an emergency via the Meditate and Reverse Flourish abilities. SAM's Third Eye ability can also be useful in a pinch, but since DNC isn't a two-handed weapon specialist, Hasso and Seigan go to waste and Third Eye doesn't reach its full potential at 70+. Still a nice sub for fights where TP gain might be an issue.

Solo-wise, DNC starts out fun and starts getting really dull in the 40s. Eventually, you'll start seeing other jobs that can solo mobs faster than a DNC. This is largely because you're standing there poking mobs with weak little daggers. As mob defense improves, soloing only starts to take longer and longer. I've soloed most of my levels to 47, perhaps 6 levels in PT. Its dull now, I'd rather PT.

PT-wise DNCs are useful, but there's also lots of people who level DNC these days, so you'll be in some competition for the slot in PT. DNCs are invited for backup healing, mob enfeebling and things tend to pick up once they have Haste Samba at 45+. People like Haste Samba. Be wary of the people that invite you to main heal, they probably won't understand that DNC is supposed to help heal, but not be a main healer. Not unless you have like three of them in PT, then they can share the load.

PvP - your Evasion Bonus traits might piss people off a little, but otherwise you'll be cut to ribbons in short order. DNC usually needs to hit things to gain TP, people can run away from you in PvP. PvP isn't a big point in FFXI as other events are.

                              Re: Dancer/Thief

I have a lot of experience with this. I subbed THF to DNC to about level 33 last summer (before the XP boost to Easy Prey mobs and Level Sync), soloing from 1 to about 13, did the dunes until about 18, then soloed (save duoing/trioing once or twice) to 33. (I've been nearly soloing my way through the game for about a year and have never had a high enough job yet to kill the leeches to unlock Ninja; I figured I'd get to it eventually, whatever.)

I was killing Even Match and Tough mobs in my high teens/20s, but as time progressed, I couldn't take on Tough mobs the way I used to, and it would take a really long time to kill anything just smacking something around for 5-25 damage per dagger poke (and dagger is the preferred weapon for Dancer). Thief gives Steal and some agility, but it didn't add a lot of power, so I had fights against Tough mobs that lasted 10 minutes easily.

My most bitter moment was subbing level 10 Ranger to ~33 DNC to find the placeholder in the dunes to spawn Valkurm Emperor for my hairpin (so much fail) and finding out just how much more powerful that 10 RNG subjob was than my 16 THF.

So, DNC/THF might be ok for a while (I guess it might have helped me get my Bounding Boots from Leaping Lizzy), but it will ultimately disappoint the hell out of you in the end. Don't do it.
