Shield BLock Proc without Shield Skill?

    Shield BLock Proc without Shield Skill?

    I was doing the solo ENM 60 fight and went in without any food/meds to see if I can win. During the fight I notice on 3 different occasions that I did a shield block animation and my damage was slightly reduced. I went as BLU/NIN (I dont remember either job having a block skill) to Campaign using a shield and notice the same thing.

    Is this a glitch or does all jobs have the ability to block with a shield and the shield skill is just to increase the proc rate?

    Well, if you couldn't block with 0 skill, how would you ever gain your first point of skill?

    I dunno if a skill *rating* is required or not, but I don't see any reason it should be.

    Of course, jobs with no shield skill rating usually have a lousy selection of shields to choose from too...

      Well, if you couldn't block with 0 skill, how would you ever gain your first point of skill?
      I've been told you can't parry on jobs without a parrying skill.

      But to answer your question, I'm not 100% sure because I rarely play jobs that can't use shields, but I'm reasonably sure this isn't a glitch.

        as DNC/DRG with a lv30 Shield (the one that gives haste with DRG subbed)

        I do block, not alot though, but my shield skill is at least on par with a level 37 PLD, because thats my PLDs level, not sure if it carries over at all though, since DNC does not ahve shield skill *shrugs*

        have not really messed with the job combo enough to really know though.

            My DNC/NIN have no natural or SJ's derivate guarding skill, but it proc time to time when I'm using H2H

                As far as I'm aware, skill pretty much effects the proc rate. Any job with a shield can block hits, just like any job with hand-to-hand can guard... Just not as effective as those with skill.

                Skill doesn't carry through, otherwise you'd have Lv.75 NINs on their Lv.10 jobs in Valkurm Dunes getting hit like... once every ten mobs.

                Skill just determines if you can increase that ability to do it better on that job/those jobs that share the skill and if you can merit it.

                Example: Paladin can equip Longbows, and occasionally hit things with an arrow, but can't merit Archery skill.

                  Pretty much says it all right there. Though I find it upsetting to have (A) in Eva and (A) in Parry. But not have a higher proc rate when I drop down to do a CoP battle or Seal run. I mean in CoP I will parry once or twice a fight. An thats when I am at cap. But throw me in a merit party and I do the same amount of parry but im 60 away from cap.

                  Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.

                    Just to clarify as well, you cannot parry unless you have Parry skill in either your main or sub jobs. All my times playing mage jobs with a mage sub and soloing have shown me that. The second I sub THF or something, I get a few parries.

                    Probably common knowledge but considering how many people out there level only melee jobs it doesn't hurt to clarify.
