  • Getting the spells.

Ok, i have just spent the day trying to get pollen of the hornets just outside Bastok. I have subbed rdm and i go at the hornet with no weapon. Once i get it down to about 20/25% HP, i turn around and let it pound at me.

It ONLY ever uses final sting. I often get the 1 pollen but i can not seam to learn it. Is there something im doing wrong? Please let me know of anything that will help me learn this spell.

I figure if i can get this one first then get my blue magic capped for my level, getting the other spells will be a little easier ... right?

After you turn around, spam dia on the hornet, which gives 1 dmg.
but also gives 10 tp to hornet so it will use tp moves more often and
increase your chance of learning the spell. The first couple spells
seemed to take a while. After that, some come on first try but some
still take a long time- it's random. It took me 41 tigers to learn
frightful roar, but I learned bludgeon on first try.

Yes! After another half an hour, i finally got pollen! I am now going to keep using pollen to cap my skill and then go for the other lowbie spells. Any advice for a new blue mage?

Patience, patience, patience. It took me 103 tries to get Frightful Roar from Tarus in Sacrium(sp?) and 6 days to get Refueling from Clusters in Lufaise Meadows. (Granted it would have been faster if I didnt solo each spell but I wanted to save asking for the hard to get spells like Body Slam.)

41 tigers for Claw Cyclone, or 41 tauri for Frightful Roar? o.o

          But yeah, some spells you learn easy on first try, some you spend forever trying to get. It's random, but capped blue magic skill does help, so keep at it now that you've got Pollen. I remember having a hard time learning Healing Breeze and Grand Slam, and Claw Cyclone and Self-Destruct were nightmares... Claw Cyclone because they wouldn't friggin' use it, and Self-Destuct because they were using it and I just wasn't learning it... Self-Destruct was definitely my record worst, at 1/51. >.>;

Through it all, though, I have enjoyed learning spells. I can't wait for the new WotG ones in the January update!

            Re: Getting the spells.

BLU is one of those jobs that requires what I would consider Beastmaster-like patience to do in regards to obtaining spells. In fact, I treat BLU just like I did BST in many respects, I've practically soloed the whole job thus far to sub level.

There are rewards for that level of patience and dedication, though. Beastmen seals and LOTS of them. Not to mention a decent farming income if you play your cards right. I'm presently at 37, have all my spells to 40 and never asked for help on getting them once so far.

            Even that pain-in-the-ass Wild Carrot.

You just have to be patient with the job, stick with it and you'll get your spells, I personally find BLU to be rather rewarding so far, just like I find BST rewarding.

              Re: Getting the spells.

I am at the moment level 13. I have most the spells up to level 16. Still missing Healing breaze and Sheep song. Also missing most the 18's and 20's.

Although there is something weird... i have not fought any giant bats yet, but i seem to have blood drain. Would anyone know how i got that spell?

BTW im not complaining just wondering

You were probably in party with someone who had to kill a giant bat for whatever reason.

Hmm possibly... But i was nowhere near my mate when he killed any bat. We tried trio-ing in the Ghelsba Fort once, and he ran off to check an NM spawn while we carried on.

He must have killed a bat then, but i wasn't near him when he killed it.

If you're in the exp radius, that seems to be close enough. Not that you actually have to get exp, but just close enough physically that you might.

Any advice for a new blue mage?
As others have said, cap that blue magic, or try to keep it mostly capped. I would highly recommend fighting tough mobs actually to get those blue magic skillups. I forget exactly when I started soloing the Fungaur in La Theine (10-11ish? Maybe 12?) But they conned mostly T at the time. Either way, they were the best source of blue magic skillups that I have ever had and allowed me to cap my blue magic.

You may find something that works better for you, but that's what I did since they are tough enough that I can spam spells on them (Head Butt, Sprout Smack, Power Attack, all the good lowbie cheap spells). Things were even better when I got Head Butt to work with since the stun effect lasts a decent intervel.

I mostly went as blu/dnc to learn my spells once I hit lvl 10, drain samba helped me keep my mp for mostly damaging spells and get skillups faster. I haven't taken blue mage past level 13 though, so that may not be the best way to solo spells at later levels.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.
