  • /scholar!?

It was quite a while since I quit the game, but with a lot happening the last year or so I am seriuosly thinking about coming back. Before news of WoTG was released I was sure of going BLU, but with the possibility of Time mage and some other interesting jobs I will have to think about it.
After hearing about the new job Scholar and reading what little info there is about this job I started thinking about what it could do as a sj for BLU. Of course one will have to wait and see what scholar is really about, but as a taru I see some real possibilities of making use of /scholar to improve the currently lackluster magical damage spells.
Since I haven't tried BLU myself I might be wrong, but from what I gather physical spells is what it is all about for BLUs endgame for a few reasons, but mainly that the magical spells are way too ineffective to use compared to the physical ones. WIth /scholar it seems it might be possible to make it more effective to cast spells by reducing mp cost and increasing damage etc. Not sure if scholar will have mp, but I assume so since they seems to be able to cast black and white magic.
I don't know, like I said I haven't tried BLU myself and this was what I could think of why /scholar could be really interesting and useful for BLU. What do you guys think?

    Re: /scholar!?

I doubt scholar will help Blu at all because Blu spells are Blue Magic, and Scholar's bonuses are said to help White and Black magics.

That said, ALL of Blu's spells are magic, some of them just do physical dmg while others do magic Dmg. Blu's do nothing but cast spells, it's their strongest traits. It's just that some of their spells can be evaded or blocked by high def, unlike magical spells which need Mdef and resistance to be 'blocked'.

I'm thinking /scholar will probably be BLM/Scholar or WHM/Scholar. Probably not RDM because my feeling is that 75 RDM will have 99% 7 Scholar spells (just like other mages)... Just my feeling if Scholar and RDM are at all similar...

The point of subbing scholar isn't so much about the spells, it's the abilities. RDM/SCH will probably work just as well as WHM/SCH and BLM/SCH.

Well the only problem I see with Rdm/Sch is that using one Grimoire will penalize the other class of magic. So a Rdm would have to constantly either switch Grimoires or just take the hit. And with debuffs spread over both Black and White magics, and a rdm's ability to both cure and nuke at the same time, it might either become bothersome to use the abilities or force Rdm to stick to one class of magic.

Or at least, that's how I see it

It would still work wonders for them if used appropriately. More accurate/power Drain/Aspir, more accurate enfeebles, FASTER CASTING TIMES (major selling point for RDM, which has to do too much in too little time.)

              Re: /scholar!?

In merit I use very little offensive magic. When kiting, almost exclusively black magic. Meleeing, white grimoire to prebuff, switch to black to debuff. Dynamis is a bit more complicated, probably lean on the grimoire that matches the color of the mage we're lowest on atm to better fill the gap. That's just to take advantage of the effects of having the grimoire active. Who knows what other benefits there might be from the "chapter" JAs.

Very promising looking sub for rdm, just requires a little more finesse than if subbed to blm or whm.

/sch doesn't seem to have anything to offer to blue magic from what we've seen so far, but depending on what spells are available through white grimoire it might make for a decent sub in a support role.

                  Re: /scholar!?

The trouble is this: White Grimore boosts white magic, Healing skill, Enhancing skill, and Divine skill. Black Grimoire boosts black magic, Elemental skill, Enfeebling skill, and Dark skill.

Blue Mages cast blue magic with Blue Magic skill and Sword skill.

/SCH probably won't do much for BLU like it will for WHM, BLM, and RDM. -- Pteryx

If that's true, what does SCH (and RDM/SCH) do for white enfeebles? Silence, Paralyze, Slow? (And conversely, black enhances, but I think the spikes spells are about it there.)

Well, they'll still benefit from less MP and cast time I'm sure, as they said that was a general affect for spells in those categories. My guess is they simply won't recieve an effect boost (but then what happens to those spells with the opposite grimoire? Since they're getting penalized, but they're the right type for receiving a boost... )

Haha Roh! Sounds like a great plan, the game seems to have gotten so much better and with some of the old buddies still playing it'll be an instant hit for me... again!

As for the actual topic that just comes to show how little I know hehe. To be honest I think it could have been a good idea for SE to incorporate blue magic in one of the categories scholar uses, or maybe both depending on spell. It would(of course depending on efficiency) solve the problem of non-physical damage spells(assuming these were not put in any of the categories) often being useless. However that might be solved with new spells so one shouldn't think too much of it yet I guess.
