  • When does self-skillchain start getting really good?

At 41 I'm kind of neutral on it. I only get 100% tp every couple fights due to resting, and the sc damage itself is very small. The large mp cost for a self-burst is met by two bludgeons, which still cost less mp than one burst would. Of course it looks cool, but I'd rather aim for efficiency.

My question is when do they start becoming more efficient? If there's nobody else to burst off my self-SC, should I bother doing it at all since I can just use less mp to get the same damage with other spells? :\

I don't know when it starts to get good, but I was in a party not too long ago as BLM59 that the BLU was self-skillchaining for a good amount. Plus, I could burst on it, too.

It's definately nice once you get Sickle Slash. Before that I did Fusions with SA+ Uppercut or Jet Stream and they still did nice damage. Really what I've been more disappointed about is MBing. The only time I've really felt my MBs have been worth the mp so far is doing MP Drainkiss off Gravitation on colibri, which works awesome.

Take into consideration that spells like Bludgeon or Jet Stream give the mob 30 TP if all 3 hits land which is a tradeoff.

To answer your question more directly, the higher level I got the less often I even bothered self SCing whereas at lower level I would always do it. Some people like to create self Light with Savage Blade > Cannonball, I opt to spam Vorpal Blade.

Ever considered just extending someone else's skillchain so they close for more damage?

I remember trying that but most of the time you'll end up doing more damage doing a selfskillchain. Since using their strong(meh) closers mainly equaled using a weak spell or a crappy weaponskill. Especially since self skillchaining is really all about the powerful closer spells.

But I normally get unlucky, the monks rarely want to skillchain(tp much faster then I) and the war/bst rampages made me laugh.

I realy doubt it gives the mob 30 tp but anyways if you can do a large damage jet stream and a nice fusion after id have to say it was worth it.

It's been proven that it gives the mob 10TP/hit.
Bludgeon and Jet stream are both 3-hit, as such, 30TP, assuming all hits land.

Pick up BLU and take it to 18 and go fight something. You'll see them spamming thier abilites. I was fighting worms in qufim and actually stopped using bludgeon until mob was at 20% because they kept spamming Temors when I would spam Bludgeon.

never heard that before, mind giving a link to the thread and was it in ballista?

Re: When does self-skillchain start getting really good?

All magic gives 10TP when casted on a mob. This has been known for years.
Until the advent of BLU, however, all magic was one-hit (Dia has initial effect counted as one-hit, as does Thundaga III, even though it's counted as an AoE hit)
Blue magic is no different than others, except that it's multi-hit in some cases (eg Bludgeon 3, Jet Stream 3, Whirl of Rage 3). This is where the huge TP building comes in.
As an above poster said, go hit something with Bludgeon. You'll see it spamming its abilities almost as often as you do, particularly once you get it below 25% (where the mob is programmed to no longer hold TP but spam whenever it reaches 100%, as shown by RDM testing on Allakhazam and KI)

I can also vouch that multi-hit magic gives 10 TP per spell (minus Subtle Blow %.) I didn't take screenshots since I was testing it for myself, but I definetely saw 30% TP gained on the mob with fully-landed Bludgeons.

If i may ask, how exactly do you test this? As far as i know you cant see mob tp.. unless you do it on ballista / bst pets?

I self SC Savage -> Disseverment in merit PTs and if I have the TP while soloing. There is really little reason to not SC...but the magic bursts tend to be weak so I find Burst Affinity doesn't get much use.

Engage a mob. Cast Bludgeon. Cast Bludgeon Again, Cast blugeon Again. Cast it one more time. If the mob uses a TP move, Bludgeon gives more then 10 a hit. It's not really that hard.
