  • Questions from an overly confused Blue Mage..

I'm currently at lvl 43, Mithra, and generally use /whm as a sub job since alot of my parties have found that to be pretty helpful at times..My main question is, for those who dont use /thf for a sub job, how doy ou do alot of damage rather easily? My other question is, at this elvel what equipment should I be using? Could anyone tell me equipment around this level that could be pretty affordable after farming for a bit? I'm willing to put in the time to make myself better

Thanks in advance to all whom answer this and aid me ^^

I may not help that much (since i'm about 10 levels lower hehe) but I've honestly found THF the easiest subjob for me as a BLU. Having SA really helps my MP management, as I find myself waiting for the timer on SA instead of spamming bludgeon (like some non /thf's i've seen), and I'm not expected to heal anyone in my party other than myself hehe.

I tried /whm and /rdm in parties and found myself missing a lot (on melee and spells) and my spells weren't putting up the numbers I was expecting. As far as boosting your damage as /whm, try food? +STR or +DEX food should help make up for some of the things your missing with /THF or /WAR ... but to be honest I'd suggest levelling THF and using that hehe.

When I was first told that THF was a good sub choice I just about died, since I had tried to level my THF and it was a nightmare. I recently got off my behind and got it past 15 (and further) and actually had a lot of fun with it. It has also proven to be most useful as a sub to BLU, both solo and in parties, so I suggest that you should at least give it a try (once I got thf to 15 I then made it to 26 in under 18 hours it was so much fun )

    Hope that helps?

As of yet I’m only lvl 38 (haven’t played BLU in a week or two) and I’ve soloed my way up so can’t really give any advise on /THF as I always use /WHM. I tried /NIN for a while but missed my /WHM spells.

As for equipment, while using physical spells I macro in +STR for damage and +DEX for critical/accuracy and for magic I macro in +INT, seems to work well if your willing to carry around 3 sets of rings, waist and neck armour.

Once I hit lvl 40 I plan to go /THF for stronger self-skillchains then I think /WHM would give you.

I just used /war from the beginning, I outdamage most people easily and nobody ever asked me to cure and I even tanked from lvl 1 to 45 easily and occasionaly when the tank fails (mainly ninja getting hit hard and dying) I take over and tank until the mob dies.
If you want more str+ you can't go wrong with the gigas bracelet I believe, even if the second one lvl 50 or was it 60 is much more powerful (+7 str). As for the neck, I noticed that most people lvl 70+ , 60+ etc uses the Spike Necklace which is a lvl 24 but adds +3 str +3 dex -6 MND , the necklace doesnt really affect me tho being an elvaan (highest mind of the 5 races) I still heal more than my hume blue buddy with magic fruit.

What else? at lvl 48, you can't go wrong with a life belt most people (melee ) uses it until the end.

It's a little easier to keep up in the damage department without /THF at lower levels - your main spell for a long while is Bludgeon, and it's pretty good regardless of sub, and isn't helped a whole lot by SA, as opposed to other higher level spells.

40 really becomes the turning point, because SA Mandibular Bite starts a streak of lots of single hit spells that are really buffed nicely by SA. Having Sneak Attack also lets you boost your damage further by not having to worry about accuracy at all on single-hit spells, meaning you can whip out all the STR gear (or DEX depending on the spell) your heart desires. 48 you get Sickle Slash which makes /THF even more desirable.

It doesn't really become the end-all-be-all of subs until 60 though, when you get Death Scissors, Dimensional Death, and Trick Attack. It's also safe to give up the WHM sub by then as well, since you get Magic Fruit at 58, which with proper MND gear will cure for about as much as a Cure IV, for almost 20 less MP.

I'm a big proponent of subs being situational - /THF certainly has the most use as a DD, especially post-60, but sometimes a party doesn't need a DD as much as it does status cures and things like that, in which case /WHM is a fine choice. Until 48 you'll be fine on damage, at 60 you'll definitely fall behind as /WHM though...possibly even a bit at 40.
