  • What affects learning BLU spells?

I'm currently a level 10 BLU and the only spells I have learned are Cocoon, Pollen, and Foot Kick. I am trying to learn Power Attack, War Dance, and Bludgeon at the moment; however, I get hit serveral times by it and never learn it.

Someone told me a while ago that if you cap Blue Magic you will have a much greater chance of learning the spells. Is this true, or is it pruely based on luck?

It helps, though you have to realize that a lot of learning is just based on random luck, kind of like skilling up weapons. You will learn faster overall with a capped skill, but unfortunately, you will still have the occasional 10-0 runs with some skills where the random number generator just gets stuck in a string of low numbers.

Maxing your BLU magic skill increases the % chance to learn a spell. Also, trying to learn spells above your current level makes it more difficult. Trying to learn from mobs higher than your current level makes it more difficult.

And for my own sake, I always try to have 300 TP when learning a spell. No one knows if it helps or not, but it calms my OCD.

You sure about this? I learnt Feather Storm at Level 8 (Lv.12 spell) in like 2 tries, Blastbomb (Lv.18) at Level 10 on my first try, Bludgeon (Lv.18 spell) at level 11 on my first try, Poison Breath (Lv.20) at Level 12 on my first try, and there's a few others I've forgotten about. All of these were EP mobs, with the exception of Feather Storm (that was more like DC.) I don't think the level of the ability matters at all, though the mob being much higher than you probably does.

There must be some kind of factor, because the BLU AF hands gives you a boost in learning BLU magic.

However, at this point, its mostly speculation and superstition concerning the learning curve.

I tend to agree w/BLU magic skill idea tho. Because, when I first started out, I had a helluva time trying to learn Cocoon. It took me 3 afternoons. --; My BLU magic skill was very low at the time. After that, I had maxxed it out and had a noticeably much better chance at learning magic and I haven't suffered the cocoon problem ever again lol. Usually learn first try or sometimes maybe w/i 6-7 mobs.

what affects learning blue magic? nothing there I said it. My blue magic skill was maxed, I must admit that learning spells from lvl 10-49 became surprisingly easy but not so long ago, I tried to learn Self Destruct, took me 55 tries ( a whole day to learn it) so yeah...it's random luck until you get the af gloves I guess.

I reckon its your blue magic skill that makes things easier to learn i remember spending hours tryin to learn pollen because my blue magic skill where horribly low (i only had like sprout smack and coccon at this stage so there wasnt a whole lot i could do about leveling it up but when i started partying in the dunes and using all my spell repeditivly to see how much more damage i could do than everyone else, with coccon and mettalic body on so i didnt get killed very quickly. My bluemagic skill flew up and i learned everything very fast

Re: What affects learning BLU spells?

Having your blue magic skill capped at all times is vital when trying to learn new spells. Mine was 14 points under cap when trying to learn Coccoon from EP Crawlers. Capped it by spamming Pollen in front of a mog house for about an hour, then got Cocoon off of the first Crawler that I learned it from.

Anything that's Tough or higher will greatly reduce your chances in learning the spell, but it's still possible. My recommendation is to fight EP mobs with the spells you want to learn and have your blue magic skill capped. That's all I do and I have a 100% success rate so far (which includes Sprout Smack, Cocoon, Queasyshroom, Sheep Song, Battle Dance, Feather Storm, Head Butt and Helldive).

A few things I still stand behind even though people say they're just rumors (if they're rumors that seem to work 9/10 times...who cares?)

                      - Learning on mobs close to your level, or slightly above and below. Too Weak and VT+ seem to be harder to learn from in my experience.
                      - Getting the killing blow on a mob. Yeah, yeah, I know, TH blah blah, I don't care, it worked for me last night for the umpteenth time. Take it with a grain of salt of course but, there it is.
                      - Mob using the skill close to when it dies
                      - Mob using the skill multiple times in one fight
                      - Using AF Gloves (dur)
                      - Having Blue Magic skill capped (though in many cases this has more to do with the level of the spell you're trying to learn, i.e. trying to learn a spell 10 levels over you at low levels is a bad idea if you don't have Blue Magic capped, but 9 levels without it capped may be fine)

Things I have not, in my experience, found to work

                      - Threatening to summon [GM]Dave on the mob
                      - Using any elemental staff to learn spells
                      - Boosting any stat (including CHR)
                      - Killing with a sword rather than with spells (I actually learned Cannonball from it dying from DoT from, get this, Viper Bite poison last night, lmao)
                      - Using any other gear (Kilij in particular) to learn spells. Note that while using Kilij I did go 1/1 - 1/3 on several spells, but then I switched to Darksteel Falchion and had the same result...sooo I guess I was just on a lucky streak.

Also note that none of this stuff is guaranteed 100% to work. Some spells are more of a pain than others for some people. My worst ones by far have been Bad Breath (a lot of that due to a lack of Malboros close to my level, and none that I can solo effectively other than EP, and they have quite a few TP moves) and Self-Destruct (again hard to get them close to my level. I finally learned it in Gusgen...went 1/44, curse you Self-Destruct /shakesfist)

Re: What affects learning BLU spells?

I'm only level 8, but what seems to work for me is being the same level as the enemy (making it check Even Match), and having your Blue Magic skill capped (though it seems to be find if it was capped before your current level, so I wouldn't freak out from just getting a level when trying to learn a spell).

Don't know the truth to this, but it seems to work for me, so I'm sticking by it until I have different experiences.

I'm lvl 12 and have yet to learn a single blue magic spell. Had Cocoon used on me at least 5+ times, had Pollen used 3+, Foot Kick probably 5+, then a bunch of other stuff like Helldive, Feather Storm, Sprout Smack....nothing. I just want to learn a spell, any spell, as I'm beginning to wonder whether they even exist.

early level spell is so hard to get...

I didn't get good learning rate until I learned 4-6 spells

                              What affects learning BLU spells?

I think it is affected by how often the mob uses the BLU spell that you are trying to learn.

The less special move "options" that the mob has, the easier for the BLU spell to learn. For example, Goblin's Bomb Toss. A non-spell-casting type Goblin only has Goblin Rush or Bomb Toss. Everytime a goblin uses a special move, it has 0.5 chance to use Bomb Toss.

My BLU learned Bomb Toss (lvl 33 spell) while I was in exp party (lvl 16) in Dunes. Spell like Curse Sphere is easy to learn too, the fly likes to spam poison or Curse Sphere.

Compare to mob like War-machine (Orc), it has like 6 special moves. Try to learn Blastbomb (lvl 18 spell) from War-machine is a nightmare... when you want it to use Blastbomb, they spam Fountain or Flame Arrow instead >.<

Same thing happened to me while trying to learn Healing Breeze, the mob keep using Stomp, Cold Stare, Beserk, etc.

On the other hand, I found that leran Bludgeon from too-weak Cardian (lvl 10 - 14) while I was lvl 18, is very quick: strip all the armor and weapon, /whm for 0 hand-to-hand skill, train/link the entire floor of Cardian in Outer Horutoto Ruin, and let them beat the hell on of me, and let them spam their special moves.

I learned Feather Storm in the same manner. I had a lvl 75 bard help me while I was training the Yagudo. I learned the spell while 30+ mobs was trying to murder me XD

The more frequent the mobs use that BLU spell, the better chance to learn that spell. The rest is base on luck I guess...
