Its never really been viable nor has it been an intelligent form of farming. Farming by spam will get you nowhere fast and farming in low level EXP zones will make you more enemies than friends. I suggest taking up a melee job for farming purposes until your BLM is a bit more solo-capable for real farming.

Here's a listing of some farming guides:

Farming - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more

at what level can blm "farm for real"? above 40 or are we talking 60 and over?

      p.s

If it was never viable why did they nerf it?

Farming "for real" is picking your targets based on demand and pursuing them accordingly. There's not much in demand at your level outside of low level synth materials. Dhamel, Cockatrice and Coruel meats; Silk thread, ram skins are about the best it gets.

You could do FoV for a bit more gil, too.

Selphiie's guide in particular will give you some going rates on what NPCs will pay for certain items, though the guide has not been updated since the player quit. If you want to make the most gil you can, don't rely on the AH alone, see what NPCs can offer you as well, sometimes you'll make a better profit on NPCs.

Finally, AOE farming was never viable. You might have gotten it in your head that you saw more drops, but I'm willing to bet they weren't of much value and mostly just based on how many mobs you pulled. But when you factor in the respawn time vs the value of the drops, its probably not worth it at all.

Don't forget that the mobs de spawn now as well. After chassing you for a bit they will depop. So they did make it harder to AoE farm as well.

It still nerfed AoE farming though lol.

They could have nerfed MPK by making the mob go back to its orginal "roaming" zone before aggroing anyone again though.

If you want them not to depop, just don't out-run them. Let them get close enough to miss you now and then and they'll keep up. My friend trains the horuto ruins and AOE for the wild onions. He can make over 70-100K/Hour if no one else is there. So, AOE farming must be viable if you find the right spots?
