  • Black mage missing job ability?

I remember when I first started play FFXI, I watch the intro cinematic. There is a scene after the Orcs break into Sandy where you see some taru (look like BLM to me) casting until they drop dead. I always thought, until I reached level 75 on BLM, that BLM had a job ability that will use their HP as MP.

For example, you have 752HP and only 18 MP left. You use this ability which will last for a period of time. You cast a AM2, which costs 287 mp, it will take away your remaining 18 mp but will also take away some amount of HP to compensate for the spell cost.

Every spell casted during the time this Job Ability is active will use HP if there is no MP remaining. You can literally cast spells until you drop dead.

For example, you have 108 HP and 0 mp left. You use this job ability and cast a AM2. On completion of the spell you will drop to the ground for having 0 HP. To be honest that is what I thought Manafont did when I first started.

I was kind of curious did anyone else think of this when they saw the intro cinematic?

    Not really.

You see black mages casting meteor in the intro movie, doesn't mean they can in the game. A lot of the stuff in the intro is pretty far-fetched.

I thought they were just showcasing the destructive power of timed Blizzaga III: what, you didn't hear the officer guy shout ":17!"?

That Taru didn't die, he tripped over a pebble that was about 2mm tall, landed on his head, and knocked himself out.

Interesting idea, but any true BLM would rather run for his life than expend it to kill something.

This is definitely a Red Mage-y thing.

I've never done DM that way but I've done other things with timed -gas. There was this guy in our ls that was ALWAYS off. I finally broke one day, after a particularly bad incident, and said "MY GOD! What do you not understand? You press your macro when the clock says XX:17. There's nothing else you need to worry about. Just stand there and hit that macro at that time." (I don't often lose it but even I have my limits.) In the end, I found out that the guy didn't know where the clock was, did have the clock up, and therefore had never even used it. I had the urge to take a hammer and bash my own brains in.

Ooh, I just realized how much I would love to have the ability to cast a spell with my HP, but I'm not sure if a job with native healing spells should get something like this . . . unless this ability also turned Cures in to MP restorative spells . . .

Re: Black mage missing job ability?

There we go, Party MP/HP Reverse, sort of the flipside of Convert.

By party, I mean the effects are only on members in your party; so casting Fire on <t> would still do fire damage, not drain MP; and a mob attacking you would do damage to your HP (or aspir from your MP)

In a party, though, you cast Cure on p3, it eats your health to add to p3's MP. You Aspir a mob, it drains MP but adds to your HP. You Drain one, it drains HP, but adds to your MP. Benedictioning an RDM with this on would fully replenish their MP.

                    This would be pretty sweet.

Oh I have a different story. I led a Divine Might run way back. I called a time to nuke -ga. One of the black mages stunned.

Was a pretty short fight overall. /nod

Seems like Souleater if you ask me, only with magic instead of attacks. Would be kinda cool, but sounds DRK-ish in my opinion, not like DRKs cast magic.

I wish that you could combine magic attacks to make them bigger, like for example if someone was casting fire to a mob, and then someone else joined in the casting it would automatically bum it up to the next level Fire II, or something like that. You wouldn't have to time it exactly, as long as the 1st person was still spell casting and the 2nd person joined in, their movements would sync up.

That's what SE should have done, to combine magic attacks, in which it would bump it to the next level, and if you add another blm into that mix...

                              A nice idea.

A job ability that makes spells use up your HP instead of MP, also reduced enmity generation because of the obvious delicate position a black mage would be put in after spending most of his HP nuking a mob.

Yes Omniblast, I wish we had that too, or a nice new system very much like skillchains...

                              Aero + Blizzard = Snowstorm
                              Earth + Fire = Volcano
                              Water + Earth = Quagmire
                              Thunder + Aero = Lightning
                              Fire + Thunder = Explosion
                              Earth + Aero = Sandstorm
                              Fire + Water = Boil
                              Aero + Water = Tsunami
