  • Sleep nuking

I'm a Red Mage by trade but I figured more BLMs would know about this so I'm posting it here.

Lately when I've been trying to solo some mobs - of any level, really, but it's been EM's and T's the past week or so - I've been casting Sleep II on them and attempting to nuke them to death in their sleep.

From what I've always known (unless something has changed) you are able to sleep a mob and cast spells on it, except for DoTs, of course, and it should stay asleep for a reasonable amount of time.

Lately, however, I've seen this is not the case. Even in XP when we get a link and I have a bit of extra MP hanging around, I used to like tossing a small nuke at the sleeping mob so that it's not so difficult to kill when we take it on. Now, they always wake up, regardless of the tier of the nuke.

This is the same when I'm soloing EM Lesser Colibri - or trying to - the big problem is I cast Sleep II, cast a nuke, and it wakes up. So I cast Sleep, then Drain it to get back the HP I lost from being hit, and it wakes up again. At this point I'm running for my life back to town.

So my question is this: Is it still possible to sleep + nuke + nuke (etc) a mob and it won't wake up after every single spell? Nuking that way will surely get me killed as I definitely do not have the MP to keep up multiple casts of Sleep.

Any insight you guys can give me on this will help. Oh, I should also add that my Enfeebling Magic is capped, though Dark is not. I'm not sure which Sleep falls under.

          Correct.

You can't cast any damage spells on it. Moreover, if it has DoT on it already, you won't be able to sleep it.

A typical way for blm/rdm to solo is to gravity the mob, move back, cast high-tier spell, move back, cast next high-tier spell, rinse and repeat.

I would imagine it would be more difficult for rdms to do this, due to the lack of tier 4 spells.

            Re: Sleep nuking

As a Rdm sleep, nukeing is really a chore than a Blessing..But with Blm the Tier spells make this a God Send and comes in Handy if you solo alot as a Blm...Blm can kill alot more with that Method...Thats probably the best way to solo Marids is Sleep, Nuke...I havent actually tried, but I see Blm's in the New areas doing it all the time..I may have to give it a shot

Wow, thanks folks. I was always under the impression that magic would not wake it up, but physical attacks and DoT would. That kind of changes my opinion of how to do things now.

I appreicate the feedback. I will try that Gravity thing, with a few DoTs on top of some of my more hardcore nukes, I should be able to survive that ... I'm a fairly good kiter.

                Re: Sleep nuking

Thanks to Fast Cast you can fire 2 nukes before the mob gets to you (and through Blink/Stoneskin) before putting it to sleep again so it isn't too slow if you play your cards right.

Gravity doesn't help that much unless you have plenty of room to kite the mob (I usually Sleep nuke almost right next to the mob ), but Stoneskin/Phalanx is more than enough to keep you from harm while you Sleep again.

One piece of advise, have both Sleep II and Sleep macroed so you can use the other if your first sleep fails. And also to buy more time to rest the best way is to cast Sleep and rest a tick or two, then overwrite it with Sleep II and rest some more, you'll get a ton of mp back that way.

                  Re: Sleep nuking

Instead of nuking a link that you've cast Sleep / Sleep II on, if you have spare MP and time, toss Paralyze and/or Slow at it. Non-damage enfeebles will not wake it, and it'll save you a bit of spellcasting time for when your party eventually gets around to waking it up.

(This also has the nice perk of making it not quite so ugly if it wakes up early and attacks you before the other monster is dead).

                    Re: Sleep nuking

I think the mob you saw was probably bound. Binding has a chance to wear off when you deal damage to mobs but sometimes it won't.

When sleep/nuking as rdm or blm, if I have space I always start with bind > gravity. And keep nuking until bind wears off. With gravity you will have enough time to move away from it until bind is ready again. This is friendlier on your MP too since bind takes very little MP.

Cool, thanks guys. Who knew this would turn into a handy solo guide?

I tried the gravity thing earlier, but stupid me, I forgot that Colibri are highly resistant to the damn spell. Took way too long for me to fight it with just Bind, and I barely survived. I guess I just need to hone my soloing technique. Maybe I should try another area and see what I can come up with.

I'm 63, something I've been trying to change for what seems like weeks now. I really just wanted to be able to solo a bit while LFP, one of my LS friends (a BLM) solos in Aydeewa Subterrane all the time and I thought, "If a Black Mage can solo, why the hell can't I?"
