  • Poison lowering other stats?

I thought poison just started draining HP at a given rate for a set amount fo time...

Until I was lvling my blm in La Theine last night, and was taking on Akbar's.

Casting Aero straight off the bat done little damage (19 points or so).

Cast posion, then Aero = 40 points damage.

Tried this on mad sheep as well, both over and over. Same everytime.

Is there an effect poison has (like lowering magic resistence) that i am not aware of?

    Re: Poison lowering other stats?

not to my knowledge. you probably just hit a string of bad luck and had your damage partially resisted (very common when skill is not capped and monsters are tougher than you).

    Thanks Yyg!

No. Poison has nothing to do with it. What you're experiencing is the fact that some of your spells are getting resisted, and others aren't. If something's resisted, it can do half damage. However, poison has nothing to do with the monster's magical defense, so yeah.

Poison doesn't affect any stats, either for players or monsters. It just deals damage every 3 seconds. The only side effect of this is that you cannot rest while poisoned, and you will wake up if you're asleep, unless under the sleep effect of Nightmare (basically only happens in Chains of Promathia missions, or when trying to defeat Diablos Prime).

            OK, fair enough!!

Must be a string of coincedences then.

When you say my skill isnt capped, it is (capped at max lvl), for my RDM raised the lvl above what my lower lvl blm can use.

            Also, on a different note...

From a thread i just read about a lvl9 rdm using wax sword, etc...

I started using swords, then when advised here, i have been using wands (yew wand right now, for lvl 21 RDM).

My dagger lvl is like 6 or something, havent used it since starting the game.

Soooooo, should i be using wands, swords, daggers or all 3??

Hold a wand in exp parties if you're not meleeing, but don't bother skilling up the weapon. The club weaponskills rdm has access to are crap, and the selection of clubs that we get deal pitiful damage compared to a sword or dagger, with the sole exception of kraken club.

Cool thanks - might buy a sword soon then to keep that lvled.

Also, going off topic i realise - I cant remember which way round it goes, is it MND for Healing & INT for offensive spell damage or the other way round?

                  Re: Poison lowering other stats?

general rule of thumb: MND for white magic spells, INT for black magic spells

                  Thanks Yyg!

                    Re: Poison lowering other stats?

Naw...Poison doesn't do anything other than DOT.

INT affects elemental and darkness magic, and helps determine your overall magic attack and defense.

MND affects healing, enhancing and divine magic, and I believe it affects your enfeebling magic as well.

I know that INT and MND also affect other things like certain weapon skills, Chi Blast for MNKs, etc...but none of that is relevant at this juncture.

And not to get too off topic, but do any other fellow BLM believe that it's terribly unfair that RDM can get access to Bio III and BLM can't? In fact, before it was changed into a RDM merited spell, Bio III was in the system programming as a spell that only BLM could learn at level 65.

                    Come on, SE...Bio isn't even enfeebling magic...it's darkness...and a BLM's darkness magic skill is much better than a RDM's.

                      Re: Poison lowering other stats?

what you may be experiencing is a combination of resists and/or day of the week bonuses. If you were casting on windsday, your Aero could have been critting for 40. also, what element is the mob? off the top of my head i think sheep drop earth crystals so therefore they would be weak to aero, thus the extra damage possibly. The birds are wind based, thus the resists

You are correct, Bio is a Dark Magic spell, and has only been cast by BLM type mobs through out the game. However, since RDM only has 3 native Dark Magic spells (Bio, Bio II, and now Bio III), I believe they just wanted to give us something to use so we could Skill Dark Magic. (I've asked a number of RDMs on my server, and a lot of them tell me that their Dark Magic Skill is WAY behind in skill, while mine I've always managed to keep cap'd. I guess leveling DRK to Lv.50 first helped me more than I knew.)

But I think that BLM still came out ahead on the Merit spells. Lv.2 AMs? Less MP than AMs, and less casting time so they can actually MB with them. Now don't get me wrong, I see your point, and would not argue it, but would you rather have Bio III and not have AMIIs? Lv.2 Elemental Enfeebles and then Bio III? (Shock II? Rasp II?) I toyed with the idea of Drain and Aspir II, but then they'd have to give those to DRK as well, so I can more than understand why they didn't go that route.

End-game RDMs with a level 37 Dark Knight sub will never ever have issues with getting their Dark Magic capped. I'm positive this is not the reason why Bio III was given to Red Mages (more a matter of symmetry - BLMs get 6 Ancient Magic version 2, Red Mages get 6 new spells of their own).
