  • BLM equipment question

    I am a 30BLM/15WHM -Hume
I was wondering if it would be better to keep my astral rings, or would it be better to get rings that give + to int. I plan to sell astrals back at 40 and get electrum if I decide I want the MP. I don't have as much mp as a tarutaru BLM ofcourse, and can't decide what to do for equipment, MP+ or int+.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

Astral Rings are useful in a variety of situations, I'd recommend keeping one and selling the other if you already have them.

+INT rings are nice, but really stop making a huge difference for you once you pass around +20 total INT on your gear/food. I'd say the money is better spent on other gear once you get to level 40 and can buy electrum rings - remember that you can always opt to swap the rings in/out as you spend down your MP.

I always used INT rings and say screw astrals and use yag drinks at low lvls.

I agree with Icemage, hang on to at least one of them. I personally wouldn't get rid of either but thats just me, I hate to sell something and then find out later that I need it. Remember there is always the old argument....Is it better to do slightly more dmg or not have the mp to do any dmg?

Here's the way I usually decide what equipment to use:

First, think about how much damage your spells are doing, then look at your current stats that pertain most to BLM - INT & MP - and check your current equipment to see what boosts it provides already. Note if you have any other modifiers like MP Healing, Magic Attack or Magic Skill.

Second, I examine the AH (or other players for R/EX items) to find pieces of armor that might fit better, or that would trade one stat improvement for another. If you can't afford a particular item, look for a substitute. Then, just sketch out what your new stats would be. If you like it, go ahead and make the changes.

Lastly, look at the food you're using. If you're fine on MP but run out too quick and can't rest it fast enough, try Ginger Cookies. If you equipment is prime but you think you still need a boost to your INT or MP, Melon Pies (or at higher levels Marron Glace) can boost BOTH generously at the same time. I'm pretty sure there's food that will adjust other stats. Look through a list and see what you can find, and don't be afraid to try different things!

BTW, if you're using certain armor, and you can find a higher level version that's less expensive (i.e. lvl 36 Wisdom Ring vs. lvl 54 Zircon Ring), switch out and you'll have some extra gil to play with.

I split the difference - went with one ether/astral, one INT ring. Being an Elvaan BLM is tough!

            Re: BLM equipment question

It all depends on what food you use.

            MP+ food equip INT
            INT+MP food equip INT
            INT food: equip MP

If you are running out of mp, w/o doing dmg then equip INT.

I feel its better to nuke with accuracy and dmg rather then resist and use alot of mp.

Although at lower lvls like you @30, I would use INT equips, due to the fact INT ratio is much greater at lower lvl and gain more benifit.

Use Melon Pie, and equip 1 int and 1 mp, try that. (it doesnt really matter at low lvl) Once you get to 60ish then equip really starts to get good and matters what you use.

What you could do is keep the astrals and buy some int+ rings too. This way you can Macro each set of rings.

When you full heal macro the astrals for the +50mp, then after you use 50mp macro the int+ rings back on to help your damage. This is easy to do and will give you some practice at keeping ontop of macros as macros are what make end game blm so damn extra powerfull.

Personally, I would sell one and keep the other. No-one EVER needs two asterals(cept galka WHM/BLM)

                  I agree.

A Tarutaru Summoner friend brought his Astrals into a LS Ballista match.

Fortunately for me I wasn't on his team.

Indeed macro'n in a blm's best friend. End game macros become insane to acheive max stats for each spell. I have to hit 5 macros at least for each DD spell. 2-3 more depending on if its a MB or low mp. It would be wise to learn macros at a early stage by macro'n MP for rest. Then use that up in DoT enfeebs, then switch in INT for nuking.

Right now I have my macros pretty simple - just change to the appropriate elemental staff to the spell, and once the MP goes down switch to INT gear.

                        Re: BLM equipment question

I max out every line in every macro, several of them require 2 or more sets of macros to equip the nessasary gear for that spell.

3 macros to get low hp, 1-2 macros to equip for that specific spell, 1-2 for added MB or low mp gear. Enfeebling is the worst for me to equip, since a majority of the spells are very fast casting its hard to hit two macros to equip all the enfeebling gear. I am still working on a way to make this easier.

i think a blm should always go for max dmg and least resist.
that for i would only wear MP+ stuff if they also grant you an INT, ELE-SKILL, or MAB bonus.
on my BLM the only stats that give MP+ are Hume RSE boots and Phantom Tathlum.
If you get out of MP in EXP-Party either you or the mob should be dead.

Well, seeing this is a thread about BLM equipment, I'll put my question here as well. I'm a fairly low level BLM [level 10] and I am still running around in level 1 gear [except for my ash pole]. What would be the closest equipment to get for my level, and how can I obtain it?

only time blm should need mp+ rings is for the convert hp->mp for sorcerors ring latent.

astrals is ok in capped areas, but for xp and majority of battle situations mp+ rings will be gimping you.
