  • The REAL damage done by a BLM...

As I'm laying here dead in CN, a thought occurs to me.

I know other people use Log Parser to find this stuff out, but I'm always too far gone when I remember about it to learn how to monkey around with it. Here's my topic of discussion, though.

As a BLM, albeit only @40 for sub, when I pt I always start with a healthy dose of debuffs. If it's a melee strong pt, Ill do my Rasp/Drown/Frost combo followed by a Poison/Para/Bio cast and finishing with another Poison due to knowledge that the first is about to wear off. Then, I'll go into my usual barrage of Nuking whenever possible so as not to pull TOO much hate, as well as making sure I'm prepped with MP come MB time.

As far as I know, all 3 debuffs stick, because they've all worn at different times. I know Bio stcks and I recast poison when it wears. My question would be this...

Is all that debuffing actually WORTH the damage it does per tick? With Bio/Poison/3xEle Debuffs ticking down HP am I already outdamaging what I would do if I didn't debuff and burned MP on Nukes? OR, should I focus less on the debuffs and more on the Nuking?

    ***edit***

And, another thought. What exactly does a SC do for your magic besides giving you a MB? Does it open up a chance of completely unresisted spells or does it affect damage with a multiplier? Same with eSeal.

Reason I ask is this. I get resisted a normal amount on EleMagics. But, about half the time I'm not resisted and I do pretty damn good damage. BUT, when I MB I hit for a consistent amount, usually LOWER then what I'm hitting for unbursted. Same with eSeal+MB. If I eSeal, then cast or MB, almost all the time I'm hitting lower numbers than without, but I hit those number consistently, rather than sporadically.

Well the debuffs are more for how they help/effect the party and not how much damage they do.

I won't lie and say that I've only seen on a vary rare occasion that Poison II, Dia II, or Bio II kill an EXP mob. However, all the little stuff does add up. Say over the course of the fight, Poison takes 50~100HP. It's not a boat load of damage, but say it doesn 100dmg for the cost of Poison II which is 45MP right?

But the real kickers are the effects of the BLM enfeebles. AGI down, VIT down, and DEX down help out the party in a large way. Melee have a better time hitting the mob, DEX lowers the criticals on the tank, and VIT allows it to take a little more damage. AGI down, Gravity, and Absorb-AGI can drop a mobs evasion considerably. Those are the reasons to use these spells, not the damage.

Leveling SAM recent in GC against bats. If I could get the RDM to cast Gravity, I noticed a sizable difference in my Acc. Frost can be just as helpful

That's what I'm talking about...the little damage that adds up.

I know the Stat Debuffs do wonders for the melees', but all the damage that adds up throughout the fight is what I'm concerned with.

And I love seeing <bt> falls to the ground. rather than <p?> defeats the <bt>.

Re: The REAL damage done by a BLM...

Personally, i think the damage dealt by these debuffs is pretty good. Throwing an all out assault of Debuffs on a mob (3x ele debuffs, poison, bio/dia) can take away about 1% of the mobs life per tic. And thats if ur going up against IT mobs.

That little message, "<mob> falls to the ground." is a result of degen. Or a failed bomb toss

Putting the damage aside, i use these spells for the statistical effect, not the damage dealt by them. Other than Poison...

Re: The REAL damage done by a BLM...

I prefered only casting one or two enfeebles per battle. I never felt that the DoT component of the Shock line was anything more than a
means of preventing the stacking of debuffs on sleeping mobs. At higher levels especially, I don't think the damage per tick or
duration ever increase. The stat reduction effect diminishes over time too.

Choke or Frost I never had second thoughts about casting. Which one depended on the overall hit rate of the melee half.

Bio II is used instead of Dia II if it's a low defense, high offense type creature and there is a PLD tanking.

Shock I used a lot to open for the RDM's or WHM's (or, God save the party, MY) Paralyze and Slow. However I have no idea
if it helped the RDMs much or not and so felt a bit guilty about spending MP on it.

Poison II does good damage for the cost but my accuracy with it flat out sucked so I left it to RDMs. I fought too many aquans anyway.

Burn was nice at low levels because you cast more spells per battle (or I did at least) and make more use of the -INT. At higher levels
I felt that I couldn't cast enough spells within the effect's duration to make it worthwile, DoT included, especially not if I had to overwrite
          a previous Frost with it.

Blind used to be overwritten by Flash so I never bothered once PLD learned that spell. Ninja usually supplied their own. And if a RDM is
present it's better for him to do it.

I felt that Rasp and Drown didn't have a noticable effect and only used them when requested to.

If RDM get tier II enffeble magic, BLM should get tier II elemental debuffs ^^, but personaly i use choke, something that stacks with the other ones and burn while XPin i cant notice a defferance realy but i guess the numbers add up eventualy. I also cast slow blind and paralize when theres no NIN or RDM in the party. then when im finished all that i wait for a little hate buffer then i nuke away when apropreate.

Honestly, at the middle levels, from 50-65ish (my BLM is like 500 XP from 60, don't ask ._.) All the RDMs in my parties handle the debuffs. The only one I throw out is burn, to increase my MB DMG. I'll sit back and wait for the skillchain. Burst with a -ga II, do about 700-800 DMG, then rest. The only other time I really nuke is to finish off that last 5% HP the mob has left. But, it is a good idea to keep your enfeebling magic as high as possible. Sleep is enfeebling magic, and you will want to be able to stick it without having to use Elemental Seal every time. Maybe you just want to throw out a Poison II and Blind. Paralyze doesn't really work that well with BLM later.

                  I remember always doing;
                  Shock
                  Burn
                  Choke(I think it was)
BioII(If after 3 fights no one casted Dia)
                  PoisonII
                  Blind(If RDM didn't; or didn't stick it)

I remember I'd usually let out a smaller/weaker nuke after those debuffs, rest up till SC and MB with whatever my strongest spell for the SC was, then wait near the end of the fight and let off a strong one, then rest.

Re: The REAL damage done by a BLM...

I think you can estimate how much damage is done by using the parser. I'm still not sure about it but you can guess it. A normal battle last about 1m~1m30s at lv40 - sometimes more and sometimes less. So that's 60~90sec, about 20~30 ticks. Assuming all of your enfeebles stay up all the time you should be able to tell how much damage they do.

Poison II: 3Dmg per 3sec? (I'm not so sure about this, maybe it's 5Dmg per 3sec)
Bio II: 12Dmg per 3 sec? (bio III is 18 so I guess it's 12 for bio II)
Elemental debuff: 2Dmg per 3 sec

                    That's about 3+4+12=19Dmg per 3 sec => 20~30x19 = 380~570 Dmg total on average per battle.

Not a very bad number if you ask me. Not too great either -_-; esp when they can't stick for long.
