Macht is right... understanding how the elements interact is something you should learn anyways. Not only does it help you sort out which elemental debuffs to use, it helps when using your nukes to know what elements are strong/weak to each other. And as he said, you'd want to know it anyways for when you do Magic Bursts, which is required knowledge for any BLM that plans to exp far into the game.
The information has other uses besides just for BLM spells, the WHM and RDM debuffs also have elemental properties and understanding those weaknesses as well is important too. Any mage can cast spells, but only the good mages know what spells to use and when.
