  • Blm/Smn - Pure DDling combo?

    Say... you wanted to be a pure damage dealer as a Black Mage...

    Would Summoner be a viable sub-job for it(max mp up, auto refresh, +int...etc)?

    If I took White mage instead what would be the difference?

    If there is anyone with experience with a Blm/Smn combo, please speak your mind.

    in theory, SMN offers only 2 useful traits. Which are 1) highest MP possible and 2) MP auto refresh. It doesn't help much with attacking but more MP heal.

    If you're looking for attack power, RDM does offer more INT and also magic offense job traits. Blm/Rdm is more viable at higher level imo...

    /whm offers much more utilities than /rdm which still offers more than /smn. If you want to go /rdm I recommend do it after 65, dispel offset the disadvantage of /rdm enough to be worth using.

      I would like to know which sub-job would be "the best" to be a Pure damage dealing Black mage..

        there are no other theories or comments, jei sums it up perfectly.

        if you want to use /smn, fine.

        but a warning first. if you use only /smn people may not invite you to party because you won't have the same utility as a /whm or /rdm. in fact, many may have the opinion that you nuke too much and pull hate without a care in the world because of /smn sub.

        personally, i don't recommend using /smn if your a blm. i would use /brd over /smn any day because at least people in the group can get something out of your songs.

          BLM/SMN sucks, except on the odd manaburn party at level 54+ where you can drop an Aerial Armor on the lightly-defended glass cannons (or if you're really desperate, in some HNM situations).

          Your nukes will not be appreciably stronger, you lose the defensive magic from or /WHM (Stoneskin, Blink) or /WHM (Stoneskin, Blink, Phalanx). Your avatars are useless other than Garuda for Aerial Armor. You can't cast Sneak or Invisible. You can't help cure in case of emergencies.

          Oh, and if you want to be pure damage, go play melee... BLM's strength is damage on demand, but also encompasses a wide array of utility spells, as well as a hefty MP reserve that can be used in other ways depending on your subjob.

            BLM/SMN is for people who don't know the first thing about playing BLM to fool themselves into thinking "I am teh ooober DD!!".

            You get extra max MP and auto-refresh, which is hardly relevent with BLM, whose main source of MP is Clear Mind (sitting down).

            You get a much longer casting blink which cost a lot more MP. This is not just useless... if you do this, you are negating the little extra MP you get from /SMN and more.

            You get the same INT bonus as /RDM, and 3 more than /WHM at lv75... while losing all the utilities that would ACTUALLY let you do more DAMAGE (stoneskin, anyone?)



            For me, when I am composing a party, someone with a BLM/SMN combo basically is saying to me "screw the party, I am not gonna help anyone else in emergencies.", and thus my responce is often "no, screw you", and merrily go to the next possible member.



            Stay away from /SMN as a BLM, let the WHM's play with that if your party ends up needing aerial armor for some reason.

                not much to add here except: Black Mages are not pure damage dealers.

                sure nuking makes up a large part of your job, but you are still expected to support the party as needed.

                  heh, i experienced that last night in the most ass way possible. we were level 59-61 taking gobbies in bibiki (they were IT++ to the 61 and chain 0 was 250 exp most of the tiem so they were strong) and i was attempting to throw out nukes and get some dmg in and i coud;n't break 100 dmg with anything but blizzard II and i was bursting wit hthat and the nin says "stop your poor nuking, help rdm cure and stun" and thats all i did was throw a cure to anyone yellow (the rdm and brd were doing so well and i'm not used to curing so i usually wasn't much help there) and i stunned every bomb except those wierd two bombs in 5 seconds situations. i never was low on mp and i got every burst off, so its not any blm might be used to, but stun whore aint a bad way to get 6k/hour

                    blms are the best at damage on demand.

                    to sit there and nuke forever would take hate from the dd causing the other mages to cure you because you're tanking.
