unless you're a galka. then I dont invite you.
S'ok...with that attitude, I wouldn't want to PT with you anyway. There's plenty of wonderful PTs, JP and NA alike, that'll be happy to have me.

I can't believe as an Elvaan I'll be so crippled...

Taru's just don't appeal to me, despite their great BM stats.

Something about an Elvaan mage just screams "RAD AWESOME SUPREME," if you will.

Well, I'll be the first to admit that facts are facts...the most important stats for a BLM are INT and MP, and Elvaans have the lowest base INT and the second-lowest base MP pool of all the races.

Does this mean an Elvaan BLM isn't feasible? Hell no! I've seen plenty of kickass high level Elvaan BLMs...Galkas, too. Every race/job combo can work out quite well. All you really need to do is be wise about your equipment and gameplay.

The only thing I don't like about Elvaan mages in general is that their casting animations make them look like complete drama queens.

Unless you are willing to spend gobs of money, your stats will not come close to a taru. Even if you spend gobs of money, you still can't match them (assuming they are similarly equiped).

However, the stats don't amount for much at the end game.

          "RAD AWESOME SUPREME"? lol.

Woah there, not to get things off topic, but I'm a 66 WHM with about 898 MP, and after food, I have more MP than HP. More MP than Elvaan HP. By about 50 points, (love that marron glace, and thank you RSE 62 and Rep Gold Medal). I frequently have more MP than the BLM in PT. Even the Tarus. If Elvaan work really hard, they can more than make up the gap as WHM, SMN or BLM. I will confirm your other asertion though - our lower MP makes us much more adept at MP-conservation/efficiency, and that translates across jobs.

My BLM is level 74, I'm Elvaan. I didn't even need to seek to get invites. There were many many many many many.

If you pay attention to equipment, you'll have the same or even more damage as other races. I've outdamaged quite some tarus on my way. Endgame equip makes it easy.

Er, are we getting stingy on the Elvaan MP topic now? I have 870 as BLM74, and this as WHM75 without food:

Damage comparison of a BLM party in the mid-60's:

              Taru #1:

              Taru #2:

              Hume:

              Elvaan #1:

              Elvaan #2, me:

BLM PT in my late 60s:

Goreth, Tyrael and Tuufless being Tarus, and Rhydia being Hume (bought Aquilo's staff by that point, though.. I have it too now, I'd like to compare again).
              BRD75/WHM75/BLM75/RDM75/SMN70/NIN67/MNK33/WAR33/THF15/etc
Race: Elvaan. I just like to play with race changer. :3

Lol, drama queen animations or not, you can't beat the Taru black magic spell casting animation. They actually chant, nobody else does that >_<

I'm restarting this weekend as an elvaan blm, thanks all for the encouragement, I was originally kinda iffy. Also I look towards Kirashi of Ragnarok as inspiriation, the first elvaan blm to get to 75 that i knew.

If SE wanted all the BLM's to be taru, then they wouldnt of even given Elvaans the choice. Its a game, have fun, enjoy yourself, and just....relax, Points made are true, i DO see a differance in damage between me and humes and tarus, but its come to the point where i dont care anymore, im one of the top DDing jobs in the game, thats enough fer me. With the perfect gear, i might get close to the tarus in my HNMLS damage, and i am indeed trying to get that gear, but im not in a OMFG IF I DONT GET IT NOW IM SCREWED FOREVER stage, i get invites, and much to my surprise, i get respect, along with the /tells of how much my race sucks at the job.

Its not easy, not easy at all (comparitvily...sp on that >.>) but if you like XI fer what it is, a game, and enjoy the time you spend on there with friends, then it aint bad at all really,

If your goal is 75BLM, then as elvan you should start as WHM... BLM is a really hard job to start off as regardless of race. And pushing off with WHM is a much better choice for elves because of their increased cure potency (MND).

Of course this isn't to stray you from your BLM goals in the long run... you'll need to level WHM to 37 (and/or RDM or whatever, that's in a different thread) in order to be a top-notch 75BLM.

Thinking back, even with the goal of BLM in mind, I would have started as WHM instead of BLM even as tarutaru... just because BLM was just so stupid frustrating...

frustrating solo-wise? i'm level 5 now and it's kinda slow but not too bad. I would imagine soloing whm would be even worse?

wait for level 8-10. You will have your fair share of deaths.

Leveling my BLM 8-10 wasn't too bad for me at all. In that level span, I think I only died once, and that was due to my own carelessness.

I've found that Lv.7 and Lv.9 always had a hump for me in my "get to Lv.10 so I can finally party!" stages. Seemed like that for almost all jobs as well. Even for RDM, but Lv.9 as a RDM wasn't so bad. I think the easiest trip to Lv.10 was with DRK. I was doing EXP chains of 2-4, blazing through EXP.

Nobody will argue that an Elvaan or Galka's base MP is, for lack of a better term, shit. I haven't partied with a great many of Galkan mages, but I have partied with a number of Elvaan mages, and have friends who are Elvaan mages.

We've been forced very early to master conserving our MP, or give up. We've also been obsessive about getting our mitts on gear that makes up for our weaknesses. My last RDM party I had more MP than the Mithran WHM, and my MP stretched a lot further then hers did as well.

At the lower levels, getting a party for a mage is very easy. Mages are always in short supply it seems. I'd wager to say I'd get quick invites in the 20's as an Elvaan even if I didn't have any INT+ gear.

I've always tried my best not to exclude a player due to their job and race not exactly working in unison, but let's admit it we all do it. I hate doing it because I've seen the comments of "what is he thinking, being an Elvaan RDM." Angers me, but I make sure I do my job and make them eat those words. But it's the lower levels that foster that sort of comment. Elvaan WHM with no subjob in the Dunes is going to have a hard time! Heck, an Elvaan WHM WITH a subjob may find that they're having a hard time. There will be plenty of invites, but possibly just as many dead party members. lol

Part of the problem, Tdh, is that the need for Elvaan and Galka BLM to conserve MP doesn't necessarily translate into someone who actually does so. The worst BLM I've ever partied with was a level 38 Elvaan BLM. Wrong nukes (Stone II on beetles?)... meleed with a staff while I'm off 5 miles away singing Ballad for the WHM... wouldn't rest for MP and would then beg for Ballad while in melee... ugh. The player was Swiss, apparently, and didn't speak any English, which meant we couldn't even tell him how to do his job properly.

While I agree that the tendency is higher for low base MP races to be better at conserving MP, due to the trial by fire of lower levels, it doesn't always happen.
