That's exactly what i'm planning on doing. Shaman's Cloak for PLD tanked parties (which I spend most of my time in) and AF body/hat for NIN tanked parties and BCNMs.

Personally, Id like to carry around the shaman cloak for normal PTs, and use AF when in a pt who cant hold hate very well. +5 elemental is like having an elemental skill more than a lvl higher than what yours really is, which is the single most important stat for resists, which are a pain. Id say the cloak and AF are both incredibly nice, but buth are situational.

Sounds like a mediocre cheaper option to ice staff to me. So if you are too poor to get the staff (which I was for around 10 levels) this sounds like an ok alternative. ^^

but why only an alternative? Why not as a supplement? If +25 elemental skill is good (af + staff), wouldn't +30 be just as good? Or are there diminishing returns on this too...

I'm getting both....I can't wait to see the resist rate on my nukes with +30 elemental

Yeah... who said anything about not getting an ice staff. Elemental skill to BLMs is like ACC to melee. Its very important, but moreso for mages because we have a limited amount of mp(before we cause downtime). A melee can miss and not waste mp, though i guess it indirectly causes downtime through slower kills and more healing needed. Ill probly carry around an Ice staff, +int wand, and a dark staff, a shamans cloak, and AF body and hat. Just switch em out as needed. Hardly what I would call an inexpensive alternative. In fact I would call it more expensive
