To answer your question, Square-Enix will most likely be coming out with future expansions and patches for new spells, items, armor, jobs, etc.

Is there any info on new spells at the moment? Not that I've seen anywhere.

Like with many MMORPG, Square is actively adding new contents to FFXI. In fact, we just got a bunch of new spells not too long ago.

Also, there are a few spells that are already in the code base, but not in game, such as the Fenrir avatar and Meteor. That might hint you off on what's to come.
