  • Going /bst and knowing your limits?

I'm a low-lvl BST (24), but I pet jobs (ie: SMN) and I thought about at least getting BST in subjob range. I know the basic dynamics of BST but I'm only 24 so I've got a lot to learn.

My question is, for those experienced BSTs, if you ever go /bst, how do you know your limits?

Obviously you won't have as great success with Charm, right? If you're say rdm/bst, or idk smn/bst, whatever, and your CHR is pretty decent, at what level mobs should you stop with attempting to xp?

If you're 75 something/bst, can you still charm pets in the 60's/70's with relative success? I'd like to use BST as a means for some higher-level farming, BUT I don't want to make the mistake of picking on stuff WAY out of my league. Any takers?

Re: Going /bst and knowing your limits?

Kiki probably has the most experience, but ill throw in my 2 cents.
(could have sworn I saw some guides on this too)

/Bst is only viable if your actual Bst is at the same level or higher.

There is a major difference between…
Person A going as 75Rdm/bst (and has bst lvled to 75)
Person B going as 75Rdm/bst (and has bst lvled to only 37)

Person B will have a lot of trouble charming higher lvl mobs...if they can charm them at all.

      I have a 75bst
      I’ve lvled nin/bst to 37.
      Sch/bst to about 30
      Some rdm/bst
And LOTS of 75pup/bst and 75brd/bst (in a party of 2 or more)

In my experiences, charming is slightly less successful than bst as main. Not a huge amount…but somewhat noticeable.

At lower levels it’s very similar to a pre 35 Bst. Charm EP/DC and put them on DC/EM. Depending on your main, you can maybe shoot for killing toughs.
Never charm toughs though. Even charming EMs might be a bad idea.

Also keep in mind, depending on what you use as your main, you’ll need to plan ahead. If you using a job that doesn’t have much defense abilities (cures/tools), you could have trouble recovering from mischarms or uncharms.

If you're 75 something/bst, can you still charm pets in the 60's/70's with relative success? I'd like to use BST as a means for some higher-level farming, BUT I don't want to make the mistake of picking on stuff WAY out of my league. Any takers?
For this to work, you will need to have your bst lvled to 75

      --------
I’ve seen Omgfjawjeikitten mention this a lot (because its true).

Though not the fastest way to get gil at first, playing bst as main will net you tons of Beastman Seals (and eventually KS). Since you’re soloing they are all yours.
And there are a lot of Bst friendly (along with Bst only) BCNMs/KSNMs that have some decent gil drops.

Some that I’ve been apart of as bst.
      Op Desert Swarm (serket ring)
Come Into my Parlor (JSE Belts)
      Under Observation (Peacock charm)
      Up in Arms (Kracken Club)
*Cant remember the name* (bst soloable, drops Astral rings…fight is against 3 bats)
*Cant remember the name* (6 Bst only. Fight is against 9 bees)

There’s some other ones too but cant remember off the top of my head.

Re: Going /bst and knowing your limits?

        Thanks Mezlo

Lets address this 1 by 1:

Charm - I've had 0 issues aside from the usual "HEHE TIME FOR YOUR DAILY SCREW" mischarms. I seriously wonder if there's some hidden "skill" (like Chocobo Digging) where the more you charm the higher your rate goes up. Aside from that, I'm currently working on SAM/BST and my Charm gear consists of what I use for every other job I've done:

Light Staff (I've got gil to buy 10 HQs but I don't want to...)
        Noble's Ribbon
        Bird Whistle
        2xLoyalty Ring
        Corsette+1

Note that a lot more people put even more gear/resources (+food) on charming, but it's all too random for me.
As Romyro addressed, BST job needs to be equal or over the main job you're doing. I have personally tested this in sky with me as 75DRK/37BST(75) and my friend 75DRK/37BST(37) and he took too many attempts to charm a bird, he didn't believe the charm "theory" initially.

Limits? This is what I drew a while ago:

The same applies, just plug in Aqaurius with any EXP mob.

I hand picked some screenshots for you to see. Note that I've quit BLU at 66 because it got a bit annoying for me and my priorities changed. I plan to finish it (very easy).

They seem to be in reverse order. My SAM is currently 66 and fast accelerating to 70.

        For a live demonstration, I've made a thread for DRK/BST, videoed: http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/bea...emo-video.html

Limit wise, it's what you impose on yourself. My methods (which I have detailed into a blog, but not released yet, I plan to release it very soon) are formed via lots of deaths. It's all about efficiently "swapping" pets depending on situation. You want to make sure your pet is near or is dead by the time your mob is dead, and move on to charm the next mob. You need to use your main job's spells/abilities properly at the right time to survive.

People seem very worried about the lack of Leave, but I think your main job's array of spells/abilities make up for the lack of that.

You will not get far if you only take your BST to 37. I would say 40 is about as reasonably far as you can go.

I do intend to do SMN/BST but that is not priority right now. I wish to finish SAM then do MNK next first.

If you got any doubts or questions feel free to bring them up, this will help me plug more "articles" into my site/guide.

Bombs are always a decent choice to me when /bst. They blow up often and usual kill off your pet (which isn’t so bad since you can’t ‘leave’)
I never found gobs very reliable though. They don’t seem to suicide very often for me. And if they do, it’s usually when I’m running past them to setup for a petswap if needed.

Also, it’s been a while but Djinns aren’t a bad choice if you’re going mage/bst. Put your pet on one, and then spam your lightest nuke (element of the day). I did a duo in East ron [s] and it was crazy. Whm/bst on lights day spamming dia ><.

Loved that camp when I was BST/BLM. I did have some hate issues but dying was meaningless there. You can get the exp you lost back in a couple kills.

I think what Lady Kiki and Romyro are trying to say is your BST level has to be greater than or equal to your main jobs level.

                    Example:

53anything/26BST (actual BST level 37) will have problems charming mobs at 53.
53anything/26BST (actual BST level 60) will be able to charm mobs at 53 with little problems.

(As a BST you will run into problem charming mobs...see Lady Kiki's "Chance of charm failing" chart above)

Re: Going /bst and knowing your limits?

yea it almost seems like you missed the point. Unless of course your planning on farming in low level areas where a 37 Bst would have no problems.

i'll look for a guide since those creators word it better.
                      but in a nut shell...

/bst doesnt work like /nin or /war. you can get nin or war to only 37 then put them down forever.
you can not do that with bst though.

The game bases charm success off the level of your Bst or your main job's lvl (as long as your Bst lvl is the same or higer). It basically goes by which ever is lower. This is the case regardless if it used as a mainjob or subjob. It kinda has to, otherwise whats to stop you from going 75Rdm/01Bst (other then the lack of stat boosts).

If your bst is level 60 and you decide to farm on 75rdm/37bst, the game would base your charm success rate as that of a level 60 bst (even though your Rdm is 75 and your sub is 37).

That means as a 75Rdm/37Bst, you'll probably have trouble charming EP+ mobs.

This does not work in the oppsite manner though. As i said earlier, it goes off whatever is lower. So dont go thinking you can charm lvl 60 mobs as a 40whm/20bst. if you do this your charm rate will be that of a lvl 40 Bst (even though you've lvled it to 60)

Thats why most guides you'll read will start off by saying you should have bsts lvled to 75 before going /bst. If you follow that, you never really have to worry about charming at your level.

hopefully that makes sense to you. it does in my head

                        I'll try too.

                        Ripped straight from my guide:

                        Your main BST level: 75

Conclusion: Your charm success rate will be Normal

                        [Case Study 2]

                        Your main BST level: 37

Your main job level (that you are levelling): 42

Conclusion: Your charm success rate will be Poor

                        [Case Study 3]

                        Your main BST level: 37

Your main job level (that you are levelling): 25

Conclusion: Your charm success rate will be Normal

I didn't miss the point, it was just a short-term goal, as I'm pressed for time with EG events...37 first, then in time to 75...

[edit] by the way, I'm not saying anyone is wrong, but it just sounds weird to have your bst be same level as main job, when bst still gets reduced to half of your main job when you sub it. idk, just talking out loud...

Weird sounding or not, by now, it's an established fact, and fairly well known, too.
                            Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,
                            yet not a mote of dust is stirred;

All it affects is your charming success…and maybe Tame but, not sure about that.
It is a little weird, sure…but having a 75???/37Bst that can only charm things at lvl 40 almost seems like a waste to me.

If you can find an area that has both high and low level pets…a low level pet isn’t going to help you much vs. a high lvl mob. It will miss all day and hit for low damage. If your 75 and farming in a lvl 40 or lower area…do you really need a pets help? Sure kills might be slightly faster but It will probably never pull hate from you.

Maybe this was done so people can use /bst.

I guess you can call this a ‘ray of hope’ if you don’t want to get your Bst to 75.

There was a LS member in our group that took Whm/bst to 75 I believe. I never saw him on main Bst but he claims it was only at ~40. He did say his charming was about 50% ish, and he was able to charm pets and keep them for a decent amount of time. 50% vs. say…90+% is a huge difference though. He was in The Boyado tree for months lvling too.

He was always /anon, but it was quite obvious he was Whm/Bst (by the whm specific gear and a pet following). It was rather nice because I could always count on a R2 or R3 during a fail Ancient Goobue solo attempt. He could have been lying about his Bsts lvl, although I don’t see a point to that.

He did die a number of times when pet swaps were needed (probably didn’t notice massive xp loss with RR2-3 though). So /bst may be possible but not probable (with it only being at 37).

I’ve never tried /Bst before my Bst was 75 but I have read multiple guides people have made. And like IfritnoItazura said
it's an established fact, and fairly well known, too
