I think I ran into a charm/claim glitch

I was using leeches as pets and colibri as prey. My leech died and I was looking for a pet. I knew I couldnt make it back to the pond with my current HP so I charmed a different colibri when a SAM ran up and hit it.

The Colibri's name didnt change color or show on my UI that I had it as a pet nor did it show it was claimed by the SAM/DNC. When used my pet status macro, it showed I had a pet and it had some TP. When I moved it followed me. I did my attack macro and the unclaim/(suedo)charmed Colibri attacked the one beating on me. Mean while the SAM is still beating on it. My (suedo) pet helps me kill the Colibri and the SAM ends up killing my (suedo) pet.

I ask the SAM "(Bird) (Experience points)?" and he said "378". I am assuming he either had a ring, was in the middle of a chain, or both.

Has anyone see this before?

The system not making a clean decision on your claim of a pet? Nope.

Did that SAM have a polearm equipped?

And I'm wondering if this wouldn't be related to the similar issues where when two people manage to attack something unclaimed at the same time, it stays unclaimed? It doesn't happen often but it does happen. Normally you would have to do something else to grab enough hate and claim it outright when this happens.

Besides the imbedded screenshots in FFXI which remove the UI text boxes!? How do you do it?

I have seen the claim thing happen many times but I thought either he would have claim(name changes to purple for me) or I have it as a pet(name changes to blue) pending on who generated the most hate.

Even embedded screenshots can be retrieved, namely by sending them to yourself via the POL email. There's no other way as far as I know, but it can still be done.

I already know that since I was playing FFXI on my PS2 in 2004. Without the UI text boxes you cant see what is happening. In this scenario all you would see is a claimed Colibri with a SAM with his sword drawn and BST in a running action. With the UI boxes you can see the log of actions as they occured.
