  • Few questions about Bst...

Ok, I have been playing bst for about three days now, and I have gotten a few questions about it. I have looked here, and if I have a question here that was not answered already in the forums, then sorry. So here it goes...

1: What exactly does Chr do for charm? I know that it increases chance to charm, but anything else?

2: Is there a way to extend the duration of Charm? I know the TWTBW are a 30 min charm, but is there a way to make it so that I can charm a Even Match+ for 30 mins as well?

3: Can you Trick Attack your own pet? My bst is only lvl 14, other wise I would have tried it by now.

4: Chr gear is good for Bst, I know that. But, is there a such thing as too much Chr? At lvl 15 I will be having +7 Chr (Hope Ring X2 and Bird Whistle).

5: Is the Beast Whistle Worth it? (Vit+2 Chr+2 compared to the Bird Whistle Hp+5 Chr+3)

6: Is getting the Monster Signa a good idea. (+8 Chr and with the +7 that I have will be at +15 Chr). Every time I gear swap, I will loose all Tp, and I will not be able to use Curing Waltzes at later levels, but is the +8 Chr on the item worth loosing the Tp?

7: Most Bsts I see walking around are /nin. Why is it that? Why don't they go as /Dnc? Wont /Dnc give you more Chr and a way to self heal at lvl 30? What would be the better sub job out of these 2?

8: What type of gear should I use for my Bst? Evasion? Defense? Attack?

    Thanks for the help.

Only Charm+ gear can do that. Well, and Familiar.
4: Chr gear is good for Bst, I know that. But, is there a such thing as too much Chr? At lvl 15 I will be having +7 Chr (Hope Ring X2 and Bird Whistle).
The more, the better. But don't full time CHR gear if you care about performance.
    Nah. It's overpriced anyways.
7: Most Bsts I see walking around are /nin. Why is it that? Why don't they go as /Dnc? Wont /Dnc give you more Chr and a way to self heal at lvl 30? What would be the better sub job out of these 2?
Stat differences across sub are completely negligible. The purpose of /NIN is the same purpose it is for any other job. To let you do more damage to the mob without being harmed.
8: What type of gear should I use for my Bst? Evasion? Defense? Attack?
Offensive gear when the mob isn't on you, defensive gear when it is.

1: What exactly does Chr do for charm? I know that it increases chance to charm, but anything else?

      Nope, just chance to charm.

2: Is there a way to extend the duration of Charm? I know the TWTBW are a 30 min charm, but is there a way to make it so that I can charm a Even Match+ for 30 mins as well?

Every +1 from charm gear = about +5% duration, with a cap of just over double charm length I believe.

3: Can you Trick Attack your own pet? My bst is only lvl 14, other wise I would have tried it by now.

No you can't, but you do get Snarl at 45 which is amazing for jug pets. It transfers *all* your hate and is on a 30s recast.

4: Chr gear is good for Bst, I know that. But, is there a such thing as too much Chr? At lvl 15 I will be having +7 Chr (Hope Ring X2 and Bird Whistle).

Yes. You'll ideally want to stack as much +Charm 1st, and then CHR gear. Apollo's staff is the most powerful piece of charming gear you'll ever get. Make sure you have a charm set & a battle set for gear swaps (don't fight in your charming gear in other words)

5: Is the Beast Whistle Worth it? (Vit+2 Chr+2 compared to the Bird Whistle Hp+5 Chr+3)

      No.

It's only really good for charming hard stuff like Slimes, and again this is only before 51.

7: Most Bsts I see walking around are /nin. Why is it that? Why don't they go as /Dnc? Wont /Dnc give you more Chr and a way to self heal at lvl 30? What would be the better sub job out of these 2?

WHM sub is the best general purpose sub for soloing, with NIN being the next best choice (or if you don't need status cures)The CHR gained from /DNC is negligible.

8: What type of gear should I use for my Bst? Evasion? Defense? Attack?

It depends. I find -enmity to help a great deal when pets are plentiful/very strong since it helps keep the heat off you. Generally you'll want to just gear like a normal DD would and try to pace yourself so that the pet takes most of the heat. Having an emergency tanking set is nice though for when shit hits the fan, and believe me it will happen more often than you'd like on BST.

      Thanks for the help.

Oh, I guess there is. Maybe I'll fool around with the gear when I get my hands on it. Thanks.

Ok, but the + Charm is really only effective in later levels as you cant really get it in the early levels?

Ok, thats what I though. Why would they even bother giving you a beast whistle when you can just equip a bird whistle?

Ok, as Armando said, it is expensive and over priced, I can afford it, but I don't think it will help all that much. Also... IS the light staff REALLY that good to be loosing Tp that can be used to help your own damage (and heal if /dnc)?

I did notice that the stats are neglegible. But why is whm usually the best sub? If you pull hate you cant provoke or animated flourish, then use Snarl to make sure the pet has hate. Wouldn't /dnc be the best because you get curing Waltz if you manage to pull hate and snarl is down. Also, this would help pre 45, wouldn't it?

I live as a DD in FFXI, so getting DD gear wont be so hard. Defensive gear on the other hand for when shit hits the fan... That will be harder. -Enm didn't matter that much, or so what I've heard.

1: What exactly does Chr do for charm?
As said already Chr increases your possibility of landing the charm upon your target mob.

2: Is there a way to extend the duration of Charm?
+ charm gear lengthens the duration you can sustain a charm. Other than that you can use familiar

3: Can you Trick Attack your own pet?
I've never tried but I doubt it, you can transfer enmity onto jug pets using snarl it's like a pet provoke. I use it to shed hate after rampage.

4: Chr gear is good for Bst, I know that. But, is there a such thing as too much Chr?
I've been told +Chr has a cap I dont remember what it is but it's best to max out +chr on your charm set until you can mix in +charm gear.

5: Is the Beast Whistle Worth it? Go with the highest +chras you'll most likely switch into battle gear after you have charmed.

6: Is getting the Monster Signa a good idea.
I had one b ut not until the 30's I wasnt penalised much wwithout it but as they say every little helps. Camp it though dont buy it.

7: Most Bsts I see walking around are /nin. Why is it that?
The majority of bsts /whm due to cures buffs status removals and reraise. I tend to only /nin for missions with friends.

8: What type of gear should I use for my Bst?
I tend to use a +chr set to charm in then change to a set to fight in. Usually a standard battle set will suffice I try to use a lower levelled axe to reduce the likely hood of stealing hate from my pet.

Also... IS the light staff REALLY that good to be loosing Tp that can be used to help your own damage (and heal if /dnc)?
Yes. Elemental staves are broken and unparalleled at just about everything they do.
But why is whm usually the best sub?
It is the safest. If you take damage, you can heal it (/NIN can't do this.) If you get Paralyzed, Poisoned, Blinded, you can get rid of it. If you're up against something that can deal magic damage, you can mitigate it with Magic Defense Bonus and barelement spells (and your own Shell, if you're not keen on wasting Tabs on that.) If you're up against something that can enfeeble, you can increase the odds of resisting with barelement and barstatus spells (including enfeebles you simply can't get rid of, like Slow.)

There are, of course, situations where you don't need those benefits and thus other subs can be more efficient. But it should be pretty clear why /WHM is the golden standard. When a /NIN gets hurt, Rune Axes aside, there's not much he can do about it; thus, against foes that Utsusemi can't protect you against, /NIN is a bad idea. /DNC is self-sufficient but cuts into your offense directly, and can't remove status ailments until 70. /WHM by contrast is self-sufficient within a margin of 20 MP/minute (Tab Refresh), and later on 40 MP/minute with Gaudy Harness without taking away your offense.

I think that is the onlyu issue with /dnc. You get self heals for Tp, and get erase, and drain samba 2 at later levels. You even can lower a mobs def, and eva, but it lowers your damage out put. But, it also gives you extra ACC, and Evasion though right?

Yeah, but 10 Accuracy doesn't really cover all the offense you lose. Just mitigates it slightly.

                  Re: Few questions about Bst...

The light/pluto staff is the most powerful piece of charm gear you can possibly get. It functions in almost the same manner as the staves do for magic damage, in that it adds a straight 10% (15 on HQ) chance to charm a mob.

Also losing TP honestly isn't that big a deal anyway when you can charm an even match and have it last for 6-10 minutes instead of 3-5. The higher up you get, the less you'll want to take hate anyway and let your pet take the beating.

As I said before (and Armando as well) WHM sub is the best for soloing for general safety, but you should /NIN or /BLU when you don't need to heal status ailments and /WAR for parties (Yes I said parties, it does happen now and then. BST can be a very powerful DD in EXP with the right jugs and gear)

Well, technically they are no good for melee damage, but no one cares about that.

You get Erase from /WHM, eventually. That gets rid of slow (and defense/attack down, song effects, etc.). Petrification is the one where bar- may help with partial resist and you hope for that since /WHM doesn't have Stona--not that you can cast anything while playing statue. Not too sure about Terror, and nothing short of that ring can do much about Amnesia.

Other than that, there's also Reraise (and Raise, for when duoing). Don't discount the Stoneskin from /WHM either; I've seen that save many BSTs more than a few times. Sneak and Invisible are nice little perks, too.

I'd think /NIN is a pretty decent choice for party use as well; Dual Wield increases DoT and may add good stats from sub weapon, adds the chance of an extra hit to the WS, and if the critter takes a swing or two at you for whatever the reason even when using Snarl, you'r still completely trouble free to the healers.

Plus, Temperance Axe off-hand is incredibly nice for merit party use. (I like having well geared BST in exp and merit parties, if you can't tell.)

                    yet not a mote of dust is stirred;
Moonlight pierces the depths of the pond,
leaving no trace in the water.

Yeah. Was mainly referring to the lower levels, since Erase won't come into play until 64. Barstone can guard against Acc Down and Slow, Baraero can guard against Silence and Defense Down, and Barwater can guard against Attack Down (worms) well before Erase comes into play, which can be nice against certain mobs.

                          /WHM doesn't get Barpetra either. That's a level 43 spell.

Wait... Doesn't Rdm get all those barspells as well? /Rdm will do the same thing, and it will give you Phalanxe and SS at later levels as well as blink which can save your ass if something turns to you and wants to take a bite out of you. You even get "En-Spells" which don't do much, but still do something. Even Regen and basic cures. Wont /Rdm be (almost) the same as /Whm for bst?
