I was in Jugner Forest [S] and campaign broke out, so I stopped to participate. Conqueror Bagodek rushed the group and at first I was fighting him, but then one of his underlings just had to jump me from behind, which I never take kindly to.
Neither did Keeneared Steffi, for that matter.
So I turned to fight this other orc. I cured myself then used Snarl and Steffi's now the tank. Probably not the best choice jug for a tank, but surprisingly she held her own in this fight with Reward active. I fought alongside Steffi, curing myself and rampaging at will, then Snarling right after.
It was about three minutes after a MNK and PLD joined to fight my Orc and for the life of them, they couldn't pull this Orc off the rabbit. So I'm wondering just how much enmity gets transferred.
I'm not convinced its 100% enmity transfer, but it does seem to be a good portion, because in other excusions where I used to jug pet to fend off mob aggro, Snarl didn't always save the day - but it could be argued I was just getting used to the ability at that time. I'd sometimes get hate back right away, possibly because the enmity for curing a small amount.
To be clear, Snarl is not like Provoke, it just has the recast of Provoke. Its more like vicariously Trick Attacking your pet. Snarl does generate enmity by itself, but not much unless you take some actions that you can stack into Snarl.
There was another account by a BST on the LBR forum. He related some interesting information I've yet to try out. Basically he would set himself up as a THF or /THF's trick partner and then move the enmity spike tagged on him to CourrierCarrie. The catch here was he'd do it with both Stay and Reward activated.
You can use Snarl while the pet is in a resting state, so it can be getting HP back while its getting wailed on. You just have to be engaged against the target you're generating enmity on.
There's some interesting potential for a party decoy tank here, I think.
