  • How exactly does Tame work?

I was taking on Dhalmels in Bibiki Bay when a pop spawned right along the path between my current pet and my next pet. Unfortunately, the spawned mob was a T, so charming that Dhalmel as my next pet wasn't an option.

So I tried charming my next pet as planned, sent it against the mob I was originally fighting, and then attempted to Tame the linked Dhalmel. The game gave me a message like, "Tame had no affect on the Marine Dhalmel."

So, how exactly does Tame work? Does it only shed hate from a mob that I've actually generated hate against? Does it not work against a mob that has aggroed me (even though I've taken no action against it)? Do I need to perform some kind of hate generating action against a mob before I can Tame it?

Or perhaps better yet, should I have sought a different strategy for dealing with a link like this? Like have my pet double tank while I zone?

Dosn't tame make it easier to charm an un-agressive animal?

Sounds like the Dhalmel didn't agro you, so it couldn't have done anything.

I know for a fact that Tame can work on Links or Aggro as long as you've not attacked the mob.

I only found tame to be useful if I mischarm, never knew it'll work on monsters that are just sitting there O_o.

          Gotta try it out.

I don't think Tame works if you have a pet when you use it.

Re: How exactly does Tame work?

Tame will not work on another mob if you already have a pet. My duo partner and I proved this this evening when he tried to tame a mob I mischarmed on - no effect.

On the other hand, it IS possible to tame a mob that hasn't agroed yet ... for example, when doing the AF pants, it's recommended to tame the tiger before charming it, to improve your chances of landing charm on a T mob. Also works on an IT slime - did that while soloing my gaudy harness :D

Re: How exactly does Tame work?

I can't confirm or refute that you can't Tame while having a pet, but I know that on several occasions I mischarmed during a pet swap and accidentally used Tame on the mob I was fighting instead of my pet and it succeeded. A higher lvl bst in my LS was around one time to see me do it and was surprised since he said he'd never seen it land before and had assumed it didn't work.

I'm not sure of all the intracacies of Tame personally, but I always thought it was interesting because up until the time I stumbled onto it I always thought it would only work on mischarmed pets. I'm assuming it has a high failure rate most of the time because of the level difference between you and the mob.

Given the OP's situation (lvl35+), I think what may have worked would have been to leave your pet, use tame on the add and hope it lands, all as you scurry off looking for another pet to take the original dhalmel. If tame landed in this case the link would stand there as the original dhalmel came after you (and hopefully your new pet from somewhere else!) and thus you could move camp away from the dhalmel that caused all the trouble in the first place :-)

In any case, that would be my standard strategy to get out of that situation whether it is a good one or not... but for my own curiousity, do other bsts have other methods they would use in this case? I'm always interested in learning new tricks of the trade ^^

Re: How exactly does Tame work?

                  Just to add more information

you can only tame a mob that is charmable, so no beastmen or NM

you can tame a mob that u have been hit, but it does become harder.

if you cast Dia on a mob, you can still tame it.

if a mob has 50% hp left, and you manage to tame it, (say your lvl 75 and the mob is lvl 50) and a lvl 50 person goes and finshes off the mob with its 50%hp left, they will get full exp (Tested).

you can tame links, if they are charmable (though if you have a pet, i am not sure)

supposely the more Int you have, the effective tame will be.

AF1 Head, and Bison Legs, both Enhance Tame (as well as the lvl 70 Bst earring, but it is only effective if your hp is in Red)

Re: How exactly does Tame work?

Leaving ur pet will have the linked mob stop doing whatever its doing. Only the original mob will come after u. So in some cases its good to just let the link happen, go towards ur soon to be pet, release, charm pet and engage only the original mob.

As far as taming an link while having a pet, i dont think it's possible. Tried it on a million eyes while doing o-hat run, failed to tame, but cant remember the exact message. Interesting test, ill go work on it.

Re: How exactly does Tame work?

Actually i can remember doing 6 man bst pts an actually having a mandy pet an taming a fellow bsts mischarm for him an the mob stopped. So i know it can be done. i was actually fighting a steelshell when i hit the tame button an it landed. i ran p an killed it, an it gave full exp for me.

ive never really tried to tame a mob i was gonna run past or aggro. i usually worried about taking the link or aggro situation then wasting a tame i know im gonna need later on.

Tame sometimes just doesnt land, an maybe this time it didnt land for u. im not to sure what the tame message is for a failed attempt, since its been a very long time since ive actually gotten one.

I've seen the tame-failed-message, and it's along the lines of "Lyonheart uses Tame, but it misses."

Re: How exactly does Tame work?

My duo partner and I were never able to tame the mischarms if we didnt have at least some hate on it. Links were the same, if they had linked but had not gotten any hate asides from that tame never seemed to work. Does hate make a difference, I don't think its always necessary because you can use tame on a monster that isnt actively attacking someone.

Hearing some of the other bst's experiences Im beginning to wonder about my past experiences. One thing I was pretty sure of though is that the more hate you have on a actively attacking monster when you try to tame it the more likely you will be able to tame it if it is around your lvl.

i actually just had an issue not to long aggo. seems when i was fighting near one of the waterways to the first floor, a robber crab aggroed me, it stripped 2 shadows, an i went to use tame. not to mention i equiiped gear that improves tame success rate, an it didnt work,

I just aggroed a Soldier Crawler 5min ago and tamed it. So, I guess all that is from bad luck.
