Re: quick question from a non-bst

Well not that alot of people ask to be involved with a BST exp wise. When they do I always say yes if I'm not really all that busy with other affairs. Even if they are that 500 exp to that next lvl and don't feel like partying. Even if they just want to leech some exp, I don't mind at all.

I see it like this. Not enough people know about BST and how it works and there is a lot of myth about the job around the normie population. Some negative and some positive, most negative. From thinking our pets hurt their exp to thinking BST are just godly solo machines that just sics a pet on a mob and lets the exp roll in with little to no involvement.

So I think of it as a BST awareness opprotunity. Bring along someone and show them how BST works, let them mooch some exp and tell them what they need to do to stay alive. They learn alot. How to manage the delicate balance of hate, what kinds of eco-systems are viable for BST exp. (Alot of people thing BST can solo ANYWHERE they want, which is why they feel parties should have access to the more traditional camps.) They can see the tactics and experience the BST's way of life second hand and at the end of the day that's one less person ignorant to the ways of us BST's.

Hell that person might tell another person and so on and so on and all those nasty false beliefs about BST could be gone. Well maybe in an ideal word but I doubt it, but still every little bit helps.

Well if I know the person, then I'd probably let them leech off me. If it's someone I don't know, it would depend on the job. COR, BRD, WHM, RDM, SMN are all ones I'd probably duo/trio with. I've already done small parties with another BST or two with a COR or a RDM thrown in there and it works really nice (especially COR, Beast Roll + Evokers or Corsair Roll is very nice).

If they want to that is, I'm a pretty bad BST Like this one time I was duoing with another bst and I said (This was in crawler's nest):

Me: Crap, watch out, stinking elementals.
          /ma "Dia"

          >.> <.<

The times I've partied with others were RDM and NIN, which are both insantely awesome as far as downtime go. NIN Especially can tank making things go super fast (Although this was before 12/12/05 so I'm not sure about that anymore).

With a RDM you can deal more damage, as well as cripple the monster (Always a plus).

DD Jobs I'd imagine can make thigns go faster, as long as they don't draw too much hate I suppose.

Re: quick question from a non-bst

I've duo'd/trio'd with PLD, THF, RDM and so on...

Half the time to get a friend a level back, and half the time because they wanted to see what it was like to pt with a bst -.-.

You can often go for slightly harder mobs... but it's as if a solo camp is 1, and duo-bst camp is 2-3, you're now looking for 1.5 for bst+non-bst duo. Go up to a 2 even with a bst+non-bst trio, and the pet won't hold hate enough.

I get frustrated by most non-bsts grabbing too much hate ("the pet tanks, the PET tanks!"), and trying to do sc's with me and messing up with when I need to <leave>. I prefer to play with non-bsts with them supplementing what I do as bst so I can go faster to make up for the xp cut, rather than have them try to fit me in pt-mold. Otherwise, they grab hate, I have to slap on Gaudy to keep healing them and getting smacked around by the mob and having too much downtime. When all your pet-tank has that's voke-like is <Sic> hate management is just too crucial.

Let me do my routine, you add dmg, cure me between fights... and just let me be a bst. If you don't have cures, then downgrade your weapons and do everything you can to not get hate. THF + bloody bolts is nice. PLD/NIN + cures and non-squishyness is great. Like an intelligent Courier Carrie >.> . I love the friends who can pull for me, reserve my next pet in a crowded zone (PLD), cure themselves and know *when* to do it safely, and match my timing.

It's hard to teach others that bst is all about keeping the xp flow by doing the minimum and really managing your resources to keep chains, not doing the maximum each time and having to stop.

OT, but is anybody else shocked that this poll got almost 100 votes? I'm not complaining mind you; it's actually great. I had no idea that many people read the forum of the bastard child's FFXI job.

                I'm a solo-er bst >_> I haven't duo with anyone but I did some exp PT (2 times!)

I think the best way to PT with a bst or bst PT is to at least tried to level bst a few times. Learn how bst or bst PT works.

I'm willing to PT with any job as long as it's a normal exp PT. For duo/trio/bst PT, it depends. I don't want to PT with a heavy power DD. Obviously, a power house DD will pretty much out damage a DC pet and well... they'll sure be tanking.

Re: quick question from a non-bst

As a SMN, I like partying with BSTs. Your pets tend to do more damage than my avatars over time, (with the obvious tradeoff of lacking group blinks/stoneskins/hastes, etc.) It tends to go smoother with a partner, provided they've solo'd or duo'd before. With a pet there, I have something that's going to tank for most of the battle, and my avatar should catch and hold hate just slightly before the BST would normally /release. In these situations, I look at my job the same way I see lower level SMNs on an avatar run. I'm not there to do the massive damage over time, I'm there to support the person who is, and keep the target busy during pet changes or charm breakage.

That said, I suspect you BSTs have the same issues I do with helpers. I try to avoid anyone that plays a heavy DD job like DRK, SAM, or pre-patch RNGs. Good rule of thumb is if you've ever heard someone brag about stealing hate off a tank, you can bet they have no clue how aggro works and should be avoided like the plague. I think BSTs have a much easier time with partners than SMN do, since your pet actually does decent damage. Most of my partnerships with non-BSTs tend to go like this:

Partner: "Why are we standing clear over here? I can't even see your avatar or the monster."

Me: "Because you're a spell-happy moron who doesn't understand the concept of combat aggro range. Now why don't you finish whatever you're casting so I don't have to slap you into last week when our target finishes off my avatar?"

Re: quick question from a non-bst

As a bst I have pt'd occasionally with non-bsts and I like it alot. even at high lvls it's worth it if you jug because there is no XP hit. If anything it's a bit faster because pet counts as a pt member in that it might even be out-damaging the other players. Against EM to me my jugs generally out-damage me about 2.5/1, as long as I use a lvl-appropriate jug.
so i'm making a payment over the phone of $100 to the cable company and the lady says "not enough" and I'm like "not enough my left nut that's all I got" and she starts in with "then you ain't got no internet" and the next thing you know there I am minus my left nut down at the pawn shop pawning my mom's gold teeth and nobody's really concerned that she's still attached to them which is cool and What? no I don't think this game appeals to the obsessive overly-caffienated no not at all...

the best duo i've had was lower-levels rdm and rdm...we had different subs...but with enthunder and those other fun spells (and heal) it was a pretty sweet deal.

Re: quick question from a non-bst

I never partyed much with non bst before. I did try a rdm bst combo with one of my guild mates. Pretty fun and alot different but things went about the same. Fighting slightly tougher monsters but the exp was the same if he were goign to solo it. Its a fun time non the less.

Key to doing these is communication. To a person whose never played bst before the whole "pet tank" concept is forign.

I am waiting for my friend to catch up to me in level with his bst. I am absolutely looking forward to the duo of drg/rdm and bst/whm. With me being a drg, I would be tank/dd while the bst would dd/enfeeble. With sanction refresh, I could imagine we would get some nice chains going. If someone has tried this duo please let me know how it went.

It would have to depend on 2 things: If I knew the person, and what job the non-BST would be using. Knowing someone and how they play makes it easier to accept them into a BST duo/trio setup. Some jobs integrate themselves a lot more smoothly into a BST duo/trio then others would.
