  • mobs turning yellow

ok I don't know if this is new or what but mobs have been turning yellow on me for like no reason sometimes.

Normally this isn't a problem but with so many people out there now and sometimes in the same leveling spots eventhough I normally go the extra mile and 2 maps over to be out of the way, I've noticed a whole lot of:

"if it's yellow it's mine" crap from people.

Sometimes the thing isn't even fully healed!

but they provoke it from right under my nose sometimes. Trying to kill a 1/2 wounded IT is apparently still great exp for people....

This one guy watched me try to kill something and then when I had to get a 2nd pet, he provokes the mob I want cause it turned yellow for a second.
(thought it was valkrum noob but the voker was a sam/war so at least 30 lvs there, figure he'd know something... or maybe just a jerk, but I bet if I ask, it'd be my fault for lving my crappy sux bst job in a pt area) Guess it's my fault for wanting to exp at all. Makes me want to go play HL2 or something more trivial...

I was too mad to comment or say anything. Just did /angry and left the zone to log and rant here.

WTF is this mob turn yellow garbage that's been going on? Anyone else got this problem or know of how to avoid it?

    sorry for the rant

Just wait till you get release and stupid people see your PET as free XP.

To answer your question when you charm another mob it unclaims the mob your fighting. Thats why things are turning yellow. You can also only claim one mob at a time. So if you attack one mob and your pet attacks another whoever hit last will have a red mob the other one will have a yellow mob.

EDIT: yeah i reread what you said and this 1st part isnt what you ment so just go right on to the 2nd pt ^^ im to tired to reword everything.

Its best to just not be near a pt I know its unavoidable sometimes but they just make zones annoying/unsafe. I avoid pts as they blame me for stealing all their mobs. Even if im not hunting the same stuff. Blame me for training stuff around the zone even if Im not in the same section as them. These are a couple of the reasons many people steal your mobs because your the root of all their exping problems. Also some people are jerks, and yeah to some people it is awesome exp.

ya I sorta figured that's what was going on...

It's going to be hell to do NM's then... everyone and their mother's going to just sit around till you got it 1/2 dead and then steal it from you at the last second.

I can imagine it now. Fight aquarius solo and notice a bunch of lv 60's following just to see when the HP would fall low enough and have it turn yellow so they can voke it from me and get the drops then say it's my own fault for trying to hog all the drop from a NM for a single player.

      What a wonderful system....

Fighting NM's that you can't take down in one pet is really a pain as a BST. I was a lvl 63 BST on the Siren server before I walked away from the game for awhile but I can relate some of my experiences with claiming mobs for xp and NM.

As far as regular XP goes it is fairly easy to stay away from parties during the majority of all your leveling, at least until 63, things would probably be similiar after that. Levels 55-60 or 61 were the most challenging levels for me, I'd always be in Garliage Citadel first training bats on the Hellmines in the basement, great xp (200+ and chains are easy) until another BST showed up, then you had to fight for the only four spawn spots and xp went way down the drain. And then when the beetles are even match.....

NM hunting is no fun unless you are at least five levels above the NM you hunt or are in an EXTREMELY remote place hunting something few people worry about (or camp often). My most vivid experience was when I was fighting Aquarius shortly before I quit FFXI. That is one hard NM for a lvl 63 bst to take on, I was training mandra, bunnies, crabs, and spiders, anything and everything that was even and below to me and Aquarius would hit them for 200-300 or so and kill it in a couple hits whereas my pet would get maybe 5-8 damage if it did hit the thing.

Between blink/stoneskin and one tick meds I managed to get the thing down to where it's HP was so small it seemed one hit away (this after almost 80 minutes and countless pets) and as I'm running near the lake in Boyahada to snag the last mandra I need to finish the thing off, I see someone in an exp pt do the /point emote to Aquarius.

I wait longer than usual and let Aq get very close to me before charming another pet, it was still my claim since Aq killed my pet and I didn't release the pet. The INSTANT, the INSTANT I charmed that mandra that friggin RDM cast dia on Aquarius and then nuked it for the kill.....needless to say, there are some people who take advantage of this exploit for BST NM hunting and little needs to be said for them.

In my experience however, the majority of players are very respectful of the claim and will just follow you around and wait til you die or something, but all it takes is that one person to ruin the experience. Certainly did for myself and helped push me away among other things.

That aside, I found bst to me the most enjoyable job class in FFXI and I'll be coming back soon. Good luck on your own xp/ NM hunts.

happens with Aquarius all the time actually, but at the same time if you're switching around pets all over the place in boyahda, you'll be doing just as much trouble to the people leveling there as well.

Don't want the mobs to turn yellow? engage in combat mode when switching your pets; if you do this, the mob you have targeted as your enemy will stay red (though it'll yellow if you miss the charm).

if you're hunting in a spot where your pets/enemies and the pts' exp'ing mobs overlap, you're bound to see some sorts of conflict. if a PT comes after you've had a set spot -- great, do what you choose, i guess (if it's a popular hunting spot that i was using while it was empty, such as helms in CN, I'd move, though i may decide otherwise). If you're hunting in an area where there's a wide area that the mobs spawn (e.g. dunes), then just move a little from where all the pts are -- the beauty of bsts is that with a little care you don't need a campsite to kill. If you're leveling somewhere that's always in short of spawns, yet full of pts (such as Yutanga next to khazam entrance)... well, you deserve to be bitched at there.

Oh, funny things they can do to you as well: certain low-aggro spells/skills can allow someone to take possession of attack rights to a mob, but because it won't kill whatever aggro you built up on it, it could still attack you. i've seen postings of people bitching about how a whm that wanted aquarius dia'ed the mob in the middle of a bst's release, making it impossible for the bst to retaliate in any way -- in this way the bst was killed, after which the eventual reinforcements of the whm killed aquarius.

if you really want to take on NMs as a bst (and it would require a pet switch or two for sure), the safest bet's to form a instant BST pt and take it on as a group.

So true about a lot of those things. The claimed mobs usually still come after me until I die or zone.

2 Bst pt's take it fairly easily just charming and releasing pets in one little area. I'll usually form a 2 or 3 bst pt to take it down if they are around, but that's not always the case. Needless to say, it's much more relaxing and fun when you've got other bst to take that thing on.

Yeah, there are a lot of ignorant people out there. I've had people get all huffy and pissed off just for being in an area with an aggro mob. Now and then I'll have somone slap my pet as I'm resting at their party to gain enough mp to raise one of their members. Other times Some random person from a pt nearby will come up and fume at me or something, even though I haven't been anywhere near them.... Funky.

Speaking of having a mob claimed while it still has hate on someone else... there are a few times when I've attacked a link from another party, but as they cure, the mob keeps going back to them and attacking. So it kind of goes the other way too, but in a trying to be helpful way. Unfortunately without provoke, the only other way to remedy this that I've seen is to well... cure, hahaha. It really shows you how delicate the hate game is, especially if you're dealing with a party.

Sorry to not answer anything, just sharing, lol.

why not just call for help?

People never remember to do this. Personally if the mob I got is attacking another group and since I claimed it and they can't defend themselves, I'll call for help.

It just isn't worth the bad karma to try and get 100 exp.

I'm just a new BST (lv 19) but I have some inputs:

#1 If you think that some other people will steal your kill -> Call for help. No one will get anything.

#2 If charm or attack a mob and it still after other people you can Engage then Disengage. The claim status will return to normal (ie. yellow name).

#3 In case you hate some party and want some revenge but don't have release, charm an even match or tough mob that either arrgo or link. Then command it to stay near or at their camp spot. Run far away until you are 100% sure the mob won't find you (deodorize will help too). Wait until the pet lose the charm and watch the show. It might or might not work but it did work for me ^^.

My bst is only 12, but so far I feel more ppl are Asshats towards bst, im in a spot in the canyons no one else is around for about 40 min, 3 ppl come in and already start complaining. wtf, not even been there min and ask me to leave, I just ignored, and they would stand by my prey just being annoying.
once I had my seek on (Cuz a LS friend was gonna join and we just wanted something to pass time) and I got a tell, you stupid noob, bst are for solo, not joining partys.

if you hate some party and dont have the control to not MPK, I suggest you quit BST. stuff like that is what brings down popularity of bsts and leads to conflict later on.

I can control myself and stay calm but I'm a human so I have my limit. Pissing me off once I can ignore, twice I can try to forget but 3 times in a row and even give me "a finger" then I can not stay calm anymore.

Yes, I agree that might give BST a bad name since it's not as good as moving to another spot. However, I must take care of my problems my way first before I take care of the BST problem.
