  • BST Subjobs (Confusion)

Once I hit 60 with my main job (MNK/WAR) in a few days I think I am going to take a bit of a break from the normal EXP grind and level up some other jobs.

BST is one that I have always wanted to try, and was even the first advanced job I unlocked (even though I have yet to level it up any).

What I was wondering is about subjobs. BST/WHM seems to be the norm, but I can't ever recall a time when anyone actually said 'why' that is the best combo.

From a standpoint of self healing and 'toolbox' spells (Protect, Dia, etc...) RDM seems to be better than WHM. You would get about 8%-10% less MP with RDM, but other than that I don't see many other downsides. All I have ever seen high level BST in Boyhada Tree use is Cure spells on themselves, and a RDM can use those just as good a a WHM sub - and RDM can even do some things in a clutch situation that a WHM couldn't, like cast an emergency Black Magic spell to get the final blow on a tough mob or use the self-Bar spells, or even the En-spells (although....why you would use an En-spell as a BST is beyond me... )

What is it exactly about the WHM sub that makes it superior? I'm just curious as to know. I don't think I have ever seen it explained once....?

    Mainly.. Poisona, Viruna, Cursna, Paralyna.

Obviously a RDM sub is going to get the cure spells much later (not a huge deal). Also the WHM sub gets a slight CHR advantage.

Advantages to RDM are very slim: En spells.. neat, but not really necessary. Blaze/Ice spikes.. same as above. As a subbed mage you won't have a lot of MP for play, and these spells would never really be worth it. Fast Cast.. helpful if your dying and need to get off a quick cure I suppose.

Oh yes, WHM also gets the Divine Seal ability. If you only have 78 MP at level 32, it's 4 Cure II's worth of healing instead of 3.. maybe allowing you to chain 1 more monster.

The stuff I have been using exclusively from around 55 to 60 are Regen, Blink, Stoneskin, Divine Seal + Cure III/II, Poisona.

Other stuff I've used to a lesser degree but still fairly often are Dia, Cursna, Curaga, Bar spells, Raise. ;p

I think at the later lvls you could quite happily use rdm as a sub. Dunno.. still prefer the other whm perks.

And of course whm get the 3 basic teleport spells too.

RDM nukes are going to be half-level anyway, so as you progress they will be resisted more and more. This is the case with enfeebles as well. Even with BST in the 20's, you have to cast an enfeeb 2-3 times or more to get it to stick. Waste of MP in my opinion.

RDM is a perfectly fine sub for BST, dont get me wrong. Just carry antidotes in case you get poisoned. Using it as a sub will just mean you have to adjust your style of gameplay with BST.

I levelled WHM almost exclusively because I was sick of getting poisoned. More MP is also nice - plus the black magic is more or less useless....(an axe swing does more damage than the nukes).
