I don't know anything about Release, and people keep saying that it makes a BST more "PT-able" and that it kicks ass and stuff... well... how? What's good about just being able to release a pet?

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Let's just say that you're over level 35 and in an area with mobs that are even matches and also mobs that are tough - incredibly tough. If you had a bst in your pt who was using the even match mobs around you, that mob would probably outdamage most of the other members in your party. Better yet, it would heal very quickly after each battle, unless it's poisoned or something nasty like that.
Should you try this before the bst has release, that person would lose 30% of the exp that they earn as a penalty for having a pet at the end of a battle.
Another nice thing is the abilty to charm and then release links, clearing aggro and possibly saving the entire party.
The list goes on and on and on, but the point is, yes, release is great.war28 / mnk9 / whm42 / blm67 / rdm7 / thf13 / pld16 / drk1 / bst75 / rng36 / brd34 / smn20 / sam12 / nin25 / drg5

When you release a pet it doesn't become active again until about 5 seconds later. So if you aggro some bats for example, you can charm then release, and move on. At later lvls when you solo as a bst, there are tons of areas which have hostile mobs like that.
