  • Hate management

This is for all those BSTs ( or anyone else really) who is wondering why when your pet does 150 dmg you still get hate from casting paralyze, blind, etc.. There are numerous guides out there on this, but i thought i would give it a bst perspective.

There are several ways to gain hate.
    1: Do damage.
2: Heal dmg. ( includes resting, even if at full life)
    3: Abilitys ( includes non-dmg spells).

There are also ways to lose hate
    1: Time
    2: Taking damage.
3: Abilities that cause you to lose hate ( Super Jump, Hide).

As a BST/RDM or BST/WHM im sure that in the earlier levels that no matter how long you waited the mob would still attack you after you castes any debuffs or cures ( unless you were out of agro range). All the hate you pet is getting is being completely negated by the damage it takes. Example:

    Even vs. Even
Pet hits mob for 20 ( pet now at 20 hate)
Mob hits pet for 20 ( pet now at 0 hate)
    etc...
Goatboy casts paralyze on Mob. ( Goatboy now at 10 hate.. just an estimation)
Mob hits Goatboy for 20. ( Goatboy at 0 hate again )

Now the mob turns to your pet and everything is good

After 20 this starts to change as more and more monsters have double attack, especially if you follow the food chain chart. Eventually your pet will build up enough hate to hold it for a while.

One way to avoid getting hate is to do all non-offensive actions such as resting, curing yourself, and buffing, outside agro range. Agro range is jsut past the point where you can still see your pet and the mob but you cant see thier animations. Anything you do outside the radius will not draw additional hate. The monster will however attack you if you have hate still slowly seeping away with time, and the pet reachs 0 hate ( or less hate than you have).

ALL abilities add hate. The only exceptions are ones that get rid of hate like Super Jump and Hide. If you use Fight, Heel, Stay, Reward, protect, berserk, boost... whatever it doesnt matter, you will add a little hate to you. The initial Fight command doesnt get you agro because technically you havent engaged the mob yet. This is also why 90% of the time if you are close and you use heel or stay, the mob will eventually come after you.

I hope this was useful to the newer BSTs. Im only lvl 19 myself but I can already feel the hate changing in favor of the pet. Most of this knowlege i gained experience as a BLM ( lvl 54), and guides on the net. I know I was awefully confused as to why no matter how much my pet hit anything I did got me attacked. Thankfully thats starting to not happen so much.

I've actually noticed that when I use reward (heals pet), the aggro will turn onto my pet (not sure why, just an observation). Also, using 'Sic' (pet's special move) will initially draw you hate, but usually when the pet does the move it's enough for it to get hate for awhile. After lvl 25 an even match pet can usually keep hate for most/all of the fight, so I like to fight alongside the pet to speed things up.

I think the hate system in incredibly complex and insecure for BST.

Like when I let my pet hit the mob about 5 times, run in and miss, and it goes after me.

Also, abilities, Heel and Sic cause hate so far that I know of. And if you initially cast Fight on an aggroing mob, sometimes it will go after you I noticed.

Ya the reason it comes after you is Pet may hit the mob but its also getting hit and losing that hate. Unless your pet can outdamage the mob, its hate for the most part will stay around 0. Sic does draw agro, but most of the time the damage from the pets TP command will be more than enough to get hate back, and then some.

If an agressive monster already has you on its hate list then fight will also give you hate.

When I cast blind and paralyze (rdm sub) I stand next to the mob so it can immediately hit me and get rid of any hate I have gained. Then I run out of agro range and heal myself up and rest. Then when it comes times to heel + Stay I dont have any worrys about the mob not killing my pet and coming after me. Ive found that sometimes I would still have hate from hitting the mob, casting spells, etc.. that, even out of agro range, that the monster would chase me down. I still had some hate that hadnt completely gone away over time ( when i wasnt hit), but hte pets hate had reached 0.

It seems to me that the higher level you reach, the less problems with this you'll have. I only really get major hate in freak circumstances at lvl 46. Just let your pet get some hate estabolished at the start of the fight and then join in. If I have too much hate I'll just turn away for a while and let my pet really get it back. It also is much safer to go with another bst your level, this helps a lot.
