  • Two sets of equipment?

I was wondering if people switch between two sets of equipment during battle -- charm pet, unequip +chr things, equip +dex/+attack/+evasion, whack the mob until it dies.

If you don't switch equipment, what sort of stats do you tend to go for besides +chr?

I'm a taru/whm, and I've found that while mithkabobs help my damage output, I simply do not hit the monster hard enough (or keep missing) to kill a tough DC by myself or finish an EM after my pet is killed.

I'm thinking about getting +1 dex rings, bird whistle, and armor that give attack bonuses once I get to level 15. I guess it depends largely on my race and playing style... but would +attack be a better stat to shoot for than +evasion?

That is a good idea. Currently my BST have the following gears that i switch in and out during battle.

    2 Balance ring +4 dex
    Spike Necklace
    Holy Phial
    Bird Whistle
1 Hope Ring +2 chr (Perhaps I should get one more)

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to switching gear is to remember NOT TO FORGET.

The macro pallete will give you a total of 6 lines for commands, always take this into consideration.

    I suggest doing this

    CharmMACRO
    /equip hope ring
    /equip hope ring
    /equip bird whistle
    /charm
to ensure that you always get your fighting gears on use this fight macro

    FightMACRO
    /equip balance ring
    /equip balance ring
    /equip spike necklace
    /fight

basically it ensures that after you send your pet to fight, your fighting gears are equiped.

I switch equipment now also however I didn't start doing that until around lvl 64...

I second scary's recommendation. Only problem later on is eventually there is enough char stuff that you would need 4 macros jsut to switch from chr to combat...
Still trying to play way too much...

I started doing the eq swapping in my late 40's. I do however keep my charm/fight macros separate to my gear change macros, because I seem to be using all 6 lines for changing eq.

        For charming I have:

        nobles ribbon
        bird whistle
        pearl ring
        pearl ring
        corsette +1
        hume rse pants

        For fighting I switch to:

wool cap (looks are important to me, and helms are sucky ;p)
        ryl grd collar
        balance ring
        balance ring
        life belt
        ryl kgt breeches

You may wonder why the rse pants are in there but it's quite simple. They give me about +34 mana, and also +1 chr, so when I send my pet in to fight, I can use this extra mana for blink as well as enfeebling, before finally switching to my combat gear and fighting (which obviously then reduces my maximum mana, but that's okay by this point).

Just curious, as I am starting a BST soon, using a Mithra.

Ok, say you have your CHR gear on, and charm a monster, your charm is successful.

The mob is charmed for whatever period of time, by your normal CHR + those +CHR stats from your gear. Now *if* you switch out the gear to less intensive CHR gear (fighting gear) it would be logical to assume that since you removed all that xtra CHR that 1 of 2 things will happen since you are back to normal CHR stats:

          1) In removing the CHR gear for fighting gear, the charm time and probability for staying charmed is heavily lessened, thus causing you to be in danger of backbiting (monster turns on you).

          OR

          2) The CHR level you charmed the pet is locked into the "beast" for the set amount of time because the charm command was designed to "lock-in" that charmed attribute. (ie You charm a pet for 60 CHR, with your CHR gear on, it will stay "locked" at 60 CHR and be charmed for the duration eventhough you switched clothes).

I hope this makes sense to you all because if the CHR # is not "locked" as I mentioned, your switching out gear for no reason except to fight, and the CHR you charmed the pet with, is automatically deleveled to your original CHR stat when you de-equip your CHR gear, resulting in a worthless act of even equipping CHR gear to begin with because the "Locked" stat is not permanant for that charmed duration when you take off the CHR gear....

Charm duration is based solely on level difference between you and the mob, CHR has nothing to do with it. CHR only affects the probability of charming the mob.

I've got Beast Whistle (+2 chr) and Noble's Ribbon (+3 chr), seems to be enough for now.

Switching gear like this doesn't affect duration at all. Once it's charmed, it's charmed. Duration is depedant on your lvl vs. mob's lvl, not what you're chr is. It's not like you're constantly keeping it under charm as you fight. It's instantaneous, and you either fail or succeed right then.

Correct. CHR is used just to determine Charm's success rate. After you've got a pet you can switch to better equipment until you need to Charm again.

I'm at lvl 34, the only CHR I have now is +2 (Beast Whistle). The rest of my equipment is all melee-oriented. It works alright for normal leveling, I do get more resists on Jellies, Cactuars, etc.. but for normal mobs the resists seem about the same (I used to have chr +10 or so, but I still got resists occasionally).
