Five minutes, perhaps less if it's a sub, but five for BST main.
And if a creature de-charms because of time in any circumstance, it turns against it's caller. This makes timing charms very important as you don't want to get stuck in a 2v1 match with creatures about your level.
Time varies according to the pet's level relative to your level. Early on it's probably around 2.5-3 minutes for an even, and maybe 4-5 minutes for decent challenge, then much longer if you tame lower stuff. Likewise if you tame tsuyo it's under a minute. BST AF appears to extend tame time significantly.
Still trying to play way too much...

i guess its pretty risky to tame most stuff that's under a 5-minute duration because "charm" has a 5 minute recast (meaning you wont be able to re-charm it)....
what's the best way to handle charm duration times?..
<edit>
after doing some further reading on the forums, some peeps say that "charm" has a 10-15 second recast while the strategy guide i have says it's a 5 min recast...
rofl...its a 10 sec recast...the strategy guide says 5minutes for some odd reason ~~; actually...dont even read the strategy guide, after i have progressed further and further into the game. i have started to see wholes and misleading info in the guides text.
ya, the guide is going to have some misleading information because it was made when the game was first released in NA. Since then, we have had three major patches that have changed quite a bit of stuff. But the guide is still handy, just mark through the stuff that has been changed.
