  • Coming home....Maat is waiting

I'm gonna give FFXi another time around, my bard was 64 when I left it off. Maat is waiting at 70...and since I'm Tarutaru...any advice? Should I level a different job to fight him?

Bard vs. Maat isn't terribly difficult (make sure your sword skill is up to par), so leveling an entirely different job to face him isn't really necessary. You should be fine.

      Re: Coming home....Maat is waiting

OK, I actually had three rounds with Maat as BRD a year and a half back, round three was the winner.

Biggest reason people lose this fight is (1) They get too nervous and (2) "/equip Main" macros. I made both mistakes.

So first off, make a fresh macro list without any staves macroed into it. You're going against Maat with a sword. If you don't have your sword skill to 180/185 already, that should be one of your top priorities before fighting Maat, as Spirits Within is a big key to winning this fight.

Some will tell you you need a heavy evasion/DD gear or DEF armor set-up. I did this fight in minstrel's coat, pretty average BRD gear and a cermet sword. For food I used a Tavnazian Taco for the 25% DEF boost. Addtional gear and iteams were as follows:

      Opo-Opo Necklace
      Blink Band
      Sleeping potions x12
and as many high potions as I could carry
      Tavnazian Taco
      Selbina Milk

      Songs used during fight:
Paeon IV and V for myself
      Requiem VI
      Elegy
      Finalie

So write spells for those songs, again, without writing in the staves. Make an /item macro for potions and milk.

When you enter the BCNM, Equip the Opo Necklace and start using sleeping potions. This will allow you to build some TP before you engage Maat, but it does take some time and you only have 10 minutes to beat him, so don't go over five minutes with this. I'd reccomend bringing and using an Icarus Wing just to speed up the TP build a little since you'll only get 25 TP per potion and Icarus will give you 100 instantly.

Since Spirits Within damage is based on half your HP + 300% TP, try to get close to 300%, but not too close as you'll was a lot of time with sleeping potions, just 175% should be good enough.

OK, so you've got the TP. Use the blink band next and chow down that taco. And now use the Selbina Milk. Why the milk? This is a blocker to protect the other buffs you'll be placing on yourself, Finalie will always dispel regen effects first and Selbina Milk will be taking that bullet for your Paeons.

Get to the edge of the BCNM and use Soul Voice and Paeon x2 youself, since you can't cure yourself, you'll recover a good amount of MP from this. After that its Elegy and Requiem VI for Maat. Elegy under Soul Voice is a major killer for hand-to-hand fighters like Maat, he'll be fighting you in slow-motion now, though the punches and Asuran Fist will still sting a little. Requiem VI under Soul Voice is just about as nasty or moreso than Bio III.

OK, time to fight, build a little extra TP if you feel like it and unleash Spirits Within ASAP. Then just keep tagging him, WS again as you get the TP. Use the potions as you need them, reapply milk when Maat uses Finalie on you.

Finale any buffs you see him sing that you consider a threat to you. Reapply your Paeons and recast Requiem VI and Elegy before Soul Voice wears off, too. Keep him weak.

Your goal is to get Maat to 20-25% HP before the 10 minutes are up, if you get him down to that, he'll give up. It is entirely possible to beat him down to 0, but not required.

Ok I finally got around to leveling sword to 175 now for spirits within.

Some gear I'm gonna use is:

        Scorpion Harness
        Battle Gloves
        Chiv Chain
        Gleeman Belt
        Courage Rings x2

Need some advice for head, legs, feet and back.

Don't worry about the armor so much, really, you can beat him in your AF if you really wanted to. The songs and items are key, armor is trivial against Maat.

Maat WSs are really unfair for pretty much any job. The only ones that aren't totally wtfpwnd by them out of the blue every now and then are the ones they kill him before he says hi.

At least once, Asuran Fists will spoil your day, there's not much you can do about it, except not spend your time worrying over it.

                  I diiiiiiiiid it!!!

First try...(technically...first run was dry run).

I went in friday...had everything planned out. Took all my gear off, equipped opo-opo necklace, slept to 100% tp, used icarius wing...then ate my taco, and equipped the rest of my gear.

                  .....

What did I do? I forgot to equip my sword before hand and now all my tp is gone. I sigh, and drink my selbina milk, 2hr'ed, then double hp songed. Ran up to maat elegy, requiemed, and proceeded to melee him...luckily he only used two WS on me...spining fist and shoulder tackle. I kept my hp topped of with hi-pots+2.

Most stressful fight in any MMORPG I ever played -_-.

                      Re: Coming home....Maat is waiting

Anyone konw what the 'gimmick' is for the BRD vs. Maat fight? For example, WHM has to cure theirselves up to a few thousand points for him to give up (instead of having to KO Maat) what is it that a BRD has to do? I'm guessing that it has to do with effective use of some number of songs (I don't know, though).

On my 1st try, I spent half a mill on stuff.. 2nd time, I messed up what I set out to do. I expect I'll do well next time since I actually practiced a strategy that I came up with. I'll practice more, before I give it another go.

What I came up with is similar to what I 'saw' on 'YouTube' (sorry, don't have the link - can't access much of the internet 'til I get home in a month or so). The one I saw involves the use of a blink band. The gal who posted it mentioned something about proving that a BRD can beat Maat without spending very much gil (with i saw it before my 1st try, lol).

                      Anyway, just thought I'd ask.

                      Thx

                      - Greg W.

update - btw, I have read of a few instances where Maat gives up (vs. Bard) and I know someone in my server who had that happen.

I don't think all jobs have something like that, just WHM and THF.

                          Re: Coming home....Maat is waiting

In one account that I read where Maat gave up, someone forgot their main plan, but did keep finaleeing every song that Maat did (even Balad, lol). A few more that I read (one a win, the other I don't recall), say that Maat seems to do more buffs the more that he is finaleeed. Many accounts do not specify whether or not Maat gave up or was KOed when they say that they won.
